Charles Diamond And The Inspirations - Breakthrough - Reply From Charles Diamond - Priceless
Mark, The "rules" for Rare Soul have never changed. Just the people who are involved in it. You know the answer to your question otherwise you wouldn't be sort of "seeking approval", you'd just do it. "Thin edge of the wedge" comes to mind....but then you know that, that's why you asked the question in the first place eh? Sorry to buck the general trend of the thread but there you go. Golden World
Be interested to see if anyone comes up with this. I was offered one last year....I won't say how much in case anyone has a weak heart! I turned it down, and resigned myself to the fact that unless I "find" one, my GW collection will remain incomplete. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.soulclub.org www.deancourtney.com

Walter Jackson Little Lp
As said, there are loads of these "Little LPs". Lot's of stuff on Atlantic, Chess etc. Motown issued 34 of them, made by a company in Ohio if I remember corectly. Basically, most of them are exact replicas of the full LPs of the same name, but obviously with less tracks. If anyone has a Martha Reeves and The Vandellas one I'd be very interested in buying it, or seeing a scan of it. The Willie Mitchell one is a quandry for me....I have it on a yellow wax Little LP. I've seen it on black wax and am not sure about the authenticity of the yellow one. (Can't really see it being booted on a "Little LP though can you?) Plus it was released on LOndon at it's height of popularity for 50p anyway. Any ideas anyone? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.soulclub.org www.deancourtney.com

General Feeling About Record Prices
As I started the thread, figured I'd chip in with a couple of observation..(non VAT related): I don't see The Northern Soul Collecting "scene" as any different from past collecting "scenes". Blues/DooWop/Rock n Roll have all see their "scene's" records become harder to shift as the "clientele" simply fade away. The top end stuff will always be sought after but I'm talking about records that most long time collectors know are around in large numbers but still currently appear on lists at what I would class as inflated prices. The old cry of "supply and demand" (Which I've never subscribed to as a worthwhile yardstick for the price of records on lists anyway), will, eventually, become true I reckon. Once the lack of numbers can't sustain the number of clubs and the guys who collect cos they fancy themselves as DJs start shedding their stuff it'll be vinyl utopia for collectors. I've seen a few "investor collectors" start getting twitchy already....... I've never bought a record on a credit card. Can it really be that people run up 10,000s of pound debt for records? They must wanna "DJ" REALLY bad! Finally...Once the downturn in prices happens, does anyone think they'll bounce back as in a boom and bust cycle? Northern Soul Collecting in 2025? I daresay there'll still be a few of us around still bemoaning the lack of a Junior McCants in our collections, but let's get serious here folks. Couldn't climb the stairs of the 100 Club at that age, never mind fling ourselves around the floor to Ady's latest girlie uptempo stomper discovery! New To Collecting
Hey Twoflatsup, Welcome to the "dark side". Here's my tips Mate: 1. Buy as many as you can as often as you can. Nothing worse than having 50 records in a box that holds 200. 2. Register your kidney with a South American Organ Donor charity. When you're really on your uppers and that Poets JV Copy in MINT does appear you'll get a fair sized wad of cash for a kidney (You can only pull this trick once though, unfortunately) 3. Never...and I mean NEVER take your records home in the sleeve you bought it in. (inevitably the seller will have scrawled the price all over the sleeve, and your other half will not be conned by your pathetic explanations of how you didn't pay that much) 4. If you smoke, drink, drive a car, live in house, go to football matches, enjoy the odd family holiday, then these activities are to cease and desist immediately. These activities are not conducive to record collecting. In fact they just get in the way. 5. Finally.....Only collect records you really like, enjoy your records and the collecting of 'em. Otherwise it's all a bit pointless innit? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.soulclub.org wwww.deancourtney.com

General Feeling About Record Prices
With Keith's recent post about going part time. Good luck Mate, hope it all works out). I'd like to ask a question. No agenda, no alterior motive just a wish to know how others are thinking and what are dictating other collectors buying habits. So.... When people put 45s up in the sales section "before putting them on Ebay" how many actually sell any records. I know that my sales on Ebay run at about 25% but then I only sell doubles of stuff and Motown Demos I've replace with better copies. Thing is this....I've collected for 30 years and haven't bought a record of any note from a UK dealer for almost 5 years! In fact I've sold them to UK dealers at what I could only describe as "going rate" to see them appear at more than double what I rated them at (and more!) on their lists. List after list of overpriced mid/poor quality records just get the "delete" button treatment I'm afraid, whilst the top end items attract the type of prices that far outstrip a "realistic" value imo. Just because one record fetches X amount it seems fine for sellers to quote that example in relation to another record being worth Y. I personally judge a records value by my own experience/knowledge of it, not be some price paid by someone else in an auction scenario. That has obviously curtailed my purchases over the past few years, but has also made me delve deeper into the collecting scene to find something I'd like to own. Maybe dealers expectations are now outstripping the buyers willingness to "accept" the pricing of records. Once "The Returnees", (no disrespect intended), start trying to "liquify their assets" as they did last time, then surely it's gonna be a good thing all round. Prices fall, collectors start sniffing around again, money changes hands more, and the cycle starts again. Less collectors buying more records can only be a good thing for the long term collector AND the dealers who can recognise that and stay ahead of the pack? For long term collectors....check out the sales section on ANY website (including SS), and tell me that for all the hype about Set sales, Summer sales, Bargains, Got to Go, etc etc. there's anything that makes you go "Quick....where's mi wallet?! All this is obviously just my personal opinion, but it's vinyl....and we all know that's more than a case of life or death! Is it time to ofload the big hitters and stash the money for a few years in order to rebuy them back at half the price? Go on admit it.... you know you've mulled that one over!
