And there you have it. Christ, it's like the "cold war" on here at times. We've just had a "do" with 4 DJs aged less than 25(1 aged 20), a couple of late 40 somethings plus two Djs over 50! The dancefloor was the same. 20 year olds bumping into 50 year olds! Great stuff! The "generation gap" just doesn't exist here. Because the glue that holds us all together is THE MUSIC. I've no doubt that us older ones look appalling to your average Joe in the street, but to a soul fan, be they 20 or 50, it makes no difference to us. There is no "us and them". The only place you ever hear these arguments are on the UK "scene". So...how did our 20 year olds get into it? They heard it and were hooked. You can't sell it like a perfume, you can't package it like a box of cornflakes. For a 20 year old to find the same thing I did at his age you need to be moved by the music, everything else is peripheral gubbins. To the younger element I would say....go find some records. Stamp your youthful enthusiasm on your own venues/scene or slot into the existing one and celebrate the music. Contribute instead of always moaning about what YOU think should be right for YOUR peers, and appreciate the thing for what it is. To the older brigade - If the youth show any potential, get 'em on at venues, give 'em a long leash with their records, give 'em the same respect you want from them. The young US DJs from California and Chicago I just had the pleasure of spending the weekend hanging with are exactly the same "real deal" as anyone I've ever come across in 30 years of collecting. Age is just a number to a real soul fan. And real soul fans is exactly what they are. Bit of a rant I know....but the young collectors we have over here deserve to have their praises sung. They won't do it themselves.....so I'll do it for 'em. Regards, Dave www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.theresthatbeat.com

Records And Hand Luggage Plus Buying Tunes In La
Steve, The guys who came to Hitsville carried records through in 50 boxes, in a 150 box, in a hold all, and in a carrier bag. Everyone reported they were questioined but then allowed to carry them through. Hope this helps. However, If you're on at the Bullet you'll be fine as it's all iTunes off a laptop. No records required! Regards, Dave www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.theresthatbeat.com

Steve, Why would a glossy fanzine be "unreal" because it's glossy? The fanzines you mention are all fantastic publications and worthy of our support for years to come, but why knock other "formats". Regards, Dave www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.theresthatbeat.com

Frank Elson
I must have known a different bloke. Frank came to most gigs I was involved in in the 70s. Always asked about DJs/Playlists etc and never failed to plug local clubs/places like The Concorde (Burnley) in his column. Remember....there was no internet, no flyers as such and Blues and Soul was the main conduit for info back then. He was never a Dave Godin clone, they did different jobs. Think it's a bit churlish to knock him now....times change,...as has the "scene". As for the "cool guys" avoiding him....gues I wasn't as cool as I thought! Hi Marc, When I conducted research with people before starting "There's That Beat!" the conclusion was that there was a place for a magazine that appealed to people who wouldn't necessarily class themselves as full blown anoraks but would like to read about records and see scans of records in full color and in a glossy format. If we were to produce this simply as a RARE RECORD Review similar to Tim's etc we'd last one issue and I'd be bankrupt. In fact most people think that page after page of record reviews are boring. Rest assured though Marc, when "Rare" records are relevent to the stories that we will be telling, not as a tit bit or bait to get anoraks to buy the mag, they'll be there. I believe that so far we have produced what we promised people we would. Rest assured, if the stories warrant 'Rare" records then they'll be featured. We've only had one issue so far, so hopefully the mag will develop and find it's niche as we get more input from subscribers and what they want to see in it. Feedback is ALWAYS appreciated and taken on board. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Is It Time For The Stomper To Return
In my Stateside experience, the "kids" just wanna dance to anything. Soul or no. Many of the nights are similar to "normal" clubs in UK. That's why DJs get away with playing a completely mixed bag of genres at the same event/gig/room. I've attended "Northen Soul" nights and heard Prince Buster followed by The Professionals followed by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes!! On asking the DJ "I thought it was a Northern Soul night" He pointed at the dancefloor (Which was full of drinking,, smoking, "kids", dry humping each other, looking like extras from an Austin Powers movie, but having a great time), and justified his selections thus. "If the dancefloors full, I'm happy, job done." I explained to him that if he played an LP of Kiss the dancefloor would still be full as most of the "kids" didn't know one song from another. I don't think the "style" of dancing matters one iota, It's what people are listening/dancing to that's more important. They've banned smoking indoors now in Florida, so now they all hang outside! He He! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Uh Really?
Hi Mark, I'm not sure if you got what I was pointing out, but when Kev posts a link from soulclub.org it shows up different to if you've cut and pasted the properties so we, (or at least I can't) can just click on the link and listen. I wondered if Kev was on a Mac as opposed to a PC as sometimes their are quirks between the two. The track by the way is doo doo to my ears, but hey each to his own eh? The reason it's between The Otisettes and The Outsiders is because soulclub.org is listed alphabetically! Sorry it's late Mate, and that's the best I could coome up with! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Some airlines are now relaxing the controls. Some folks HAVE travelled throughout Europe with vinyl as handbaggage over the last few weeks. Hitsville is next weekend and the guys attending with vinyl are coming from both inside the States and outside. We'll know more about the TransAtlantic rules once this weekend has happened. I'll post the results up ina couple of weeks Steve to give you heads up. Rgards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Dj V Artist
Came up in another thread that maybe DJs are frustrated musicians/artists. I'm not a DJ but I thought I'd pose the question...for instance... I found Jr Walkers growling tenor sax solos so entrancing I decided to take up the saxaphone (I was 35 at the time). Took lesons and everything. I went through a "phase" where I believed I could emulate the great sax players of the soul era and actually taught myself to read music so I could "compose" some of the sax breaks from listening to them. Needless to say I am now a very poor saxaphone player! Anyone else ever taken the plunge to emulate their musical heroes? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.cpm www.hitsvillesoulclub.com PS. I have to also add that in my time I've also been: James Jamerson, Benny Benjamin, Geoff Hurst, George Best, Johann Cruyff, Pele, Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tiger Woods, Daley Thomson, Steve Redgrave, Neil Armstrong, Ghengis Khan and whole other bunch of folks!!

'northern' Soul, America, 1964 - 1970
By coincidence this is a subject that ties in with a project I'm currently researching: The era mentioned is a veritable goldmine of events and gigs. There are distinct differences between the teenage culture of the US and the UK at the time, these mainly being: 1. The artists were performing nationwide EVERY night in the US, whereas in UK they weren't as accessible on such a regular basis. Therefore you could pop along to your local dancehall/showbar/nightclubin most major US cities and actually see the new acts that would eventually become legendary. 2. The wave of AM DJs in the US were a powrful influence during the era. Much more so than in UK. This led to DJs promoting their own "Revues" which usually consisted of the DJ acting as MC for a number of groups/acts on tour. The most famous of these is obviously The MotorTown Revues of Motown. The AM DJs were the catalyst for shows in the US, not the record companies/radio stations as was the case in UK. 3. I have US friends who were music fans during the era (and still are), and they are adamant that the live music was the draw. Week in week out. Imagine paying $1.50 to pop along to the local university to see Wilson Pickett, The Temptations, Contours, Shirelles, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson etc etc. 4. Many DJs also played on small local stations out of Record Stores. Set up a booth and Hey Presto! they were broadcasting to the local area building up interest in their upcoming shows. A couple of books on the subject I got recommended were: Rockin' Down The Dial - David Carson The Pied Pipers of Rock n Roll - Wes Smith The likes of Jocko Henderson, Rufus Thomas, Frankie Crocker, Queenie Steinberg were only the tip of the iceberg. I always find it interesting when DJs become as big in "personality" terms as the music they play.(in some cases bigger!). Frustrated musicians/singers maybe? Good subject for a thread. Thanks for posting it, maybe other info will fall out of it. Regards, Dave www.theressthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
