Soul Sam Super Star
Back in 77/78 I was involved in running a club called The Concorde Soul Club in Burnley. A small back function room in a pub with a dancefloor we used to have to clip together each time we used it and pack it away after. This club ran for 3 years and at one stage we had over 200 soulies in. Every week we had either Sam, Pat Brady or Richard Searling on. On the second anniversay we had all three on and when it came to pay them (10 squidleys + petrol), I informed the three musketeers that I'd spent all the takings on 16 Magnum bottles of champagne, 200 Hollands meat pies and a couple of barrels of peas for a "soulie supper" for everyone! Sam's response.."make sure I get at least one pie, I've not eaten all day!" Not unusual for Mr Barnfather to trek up to Burnley on a Wednesday night in his old E Type, spin a few, get a reaction, have a chat with everyone before heading home at midnight. Happy Days! Top Bloke! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Sure is. Another underated slick handed Jazz cat turned soul musician. Can anyone ID the sax player who played the opening refrain on the video? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbreat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com- Marvin On Youtube - Watch
Check out the bass player and the guy bangin' the bongo skins......How much would you pay to see this trio peform live nowadays. Seen this video before, and in my opinion it should be lodged with the Smithsonian. The consumate perrformance by musical ICONS. FANTASTIC. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com- Soul Downloads
This throws up more questions about the "access" to the music. Be interested to find out other "Soul-Sourcers" views on this issue. Apologies if this topic has already been done, if so can someone link me to the thread? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com- Soul Downloads
For free or the subscription type? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com- Soul Labels Copying Motown
Hi Billy, Surely the question is about the influence of Motown? Not so much the similarity in sound. Just looking at the people who transited through the company from it's early beginnings through to it's halycon days is proof enough of the influence. Many went on to become legendary figures in black music. Granted there are a lot of great records without a Motown connection, but I would venture that no other company/group of labels can match Motown's contribution to "Northern Soul. Which other label has had full alighters of it's music played? Surely there's no dispute that Motown was the most "influential" of the sixties soul labels that became revered on the Rare/Northern Scene? The magazine's website is now fully functional and everything has been double checked. People can feel confident in ordering through the site's direct PayPal facility. www.theresthatbeat.com I still have 3 spaces (free!) for event flyers if anyone wants to fill them. Or if anyone has a sales list etc they want to publicise send me a scan of anything at 300dpi and I'll try and fit it in. (Remember the mag is out in Sept so the events must be Sept - Dec). There is a limited amount of space left for advertisers of records, venues, soul related stuff but you'll have to be quick. Website is now launched and comments and suggestions are more than welcome. For more details about the mag, it's content and general "What's it all about" please click on... www.theresthatbeat.com Regards, Davewww.hitsvillesoulclub.comwww.theresthatbeat.com- Record Postage From Usa
Dont doubt what your saying Mate at all. Just puzzling that the minimum charge I can provide is so much higher than someone else in the same country. There's no doubt that the cost of postage here in the US is generally higher than in UK. The Scandanavians are in an even worse position. The next hike that comes along here in the US is going to push my shipping charges to $7.00 for 1 x 45. Seems expensive when you can send the same package the other way for half that I know. It's just the way it is I'm afaid. One silver cloud for UK buyers is the exchange rate though. It's killing us over here. I've stopped buying ANYTHING from UK at the moment.
