Herbert Hunter - Love Has Taken Over Me
It was recorded in the 60s for SPAR records, but remained unissued at the time of recording. It first appeared on a Rufus & Herbert Hunter CD called "Sound Of A Crying Man" on the Black Magic label. It has later been included on Kent's "Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities Volume 2" CD. Don't think it has been issued on a 45 yet, but it definitely deserves to be given the 7" treatment. Absolutely superb track!

Gloria Jones "tainted Love" Uk-issue On Soul Stop
Just pulled out a UK reissue of Gloria Jones "Tainted Love" from 1984 on the SOUL STOP label and played the flipside for the first time ever. It's called "Biking" and is credited to A.G. Now... for those of you who have heard it... what was the thinking there. It's an instrumental mid-tempo very 80s sounding synth tune. Almost as if you've put a £20 synthesizer to play any of the dreadful "default" tunes that it comes with. Who was behind this reissue? Who was A.G.? The tune is written by Ken Cox. I'm just baffled.

New Manship Site
I hope that the web developing team behind the new "look" of Manship's site is getting input from a group of people who actually uses his site on a regular basis, as to not scare away too many users when the new design is up and running.

New Manship Site
It's gone now... they have redirected the link to the old site. Oh well!

New Manship Site
Just had a quick look around. It would be great if there would be an option to view results as a "list" or as a "gallery". The gallery view is OK for the more obscure artists and labels with maybe 3-10 releases, but do a search for Solomon Burke or a "label" search for Atlantic and it unfortunately looks very messy.

Earliest Northern Soul 45s
The Count Demon track? I think that's an early (or even mid-) 60s tune. 1963/1964-ish. If not that tune, please ignore this comment...
-
Clarence Jackson - If It Don't Fit - Valtone
I sold a copy for $66 (£45-ish) on eBay just the other week. Don't quite understand the fuss about it myself. Fairly poor vocal delivery in my opinion if you compare with the other two tunes that uses the same backing track.

A Want
Superb tune indeed. , But the Maison De Soul 45 is from 1977. The original 45 issue is from 1963 on Minit.

It seems to be the consensus that all copies around are originals, and that a BIG box of them was found a bunch of years ago. No one has as far as I know been able to come upp with any real proof (matrix info, different widths of run-in and run-out grooves, volume comparisons etc.) that speaks in favour of two different pressings existing. Label scans/photos shows the label as being in different shades ranging from yellow to orange, but that's probably due to being scanned by different scanners. If anyone knows anything else, please post up the relevant info that you've got.

According to Wikipedia: Seven Arts Productions was founded in 1957 by Ray Stark and Eliot Hyman. The company was a frequent producer of movies for other studios, including Lolita for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, The Misfits for United Artists, and Is Paris Burning for Paramount Pictures. Over time they expanded their involvement in movies from just being producers to becoming equity investors with the studios, partnering with legendary horror film company Hammer Film Productions on many projects, and producing Seven Days in May and Promise Her Anything for release by Paramount; on these productions, they retained ancillary rights that they had surrendered on earlier films. In 1967 they acquired Jack Warner's controlling interest in Warner Bros. for $95 million and merged with it, becoming Warner Bros.-Seven Arts.
