Northern Soul 70's Fashion
PEGGY BABCOCK - absolutely spot on that man.......a lot of the southern girls who went to oop north venues wore those wedged sasha shoes. As you rightly said cross banded solatios, american style brouges, loafers and my favouite gibsons all with leather soles. Folk might also notice from the many pictures posted on this thread......the folk today who wear what they think is retro 70's.......dress nothing like the folk back in the day......they have it totally wrong. what about the barathera blazer........one other thing , at the time wigan started there were very few badges to be found...mainly torch, cats and international soul ........so not many allnight bags with em on..........these bags were only used because most people never had cars...........so can never understand it nowadays.....tezza I can't speak for everyone who wears retro clothing, but me personally.......................im not trying to dress like anyone from the day that your talking about, i may dress a bit loud & a bit wild but im just myself, i do own a 70's leather coat & some 70s shoes, i have them, just because i like them. I was also given a few original circle skirt's from a woman i know, who had them at the Casino, but i have a Rockabilly hairstyle, so im not really going to look like Soul folk from the early days Im an old London girl, but i know alot of the Nott's Soulies now, they made me feel very welcome, they are a great bunch of people, i think they look good in the retro clothing & they are top dancers Debbie x P.s I would just like to say.............Some of your old photo's on here are great folk's

Northern Soul 70's Fashion
Kane - Long skirt, ribbon.... not quite the same more rock and roll than n.s Alot of the clothing i wear for a Soul night is NOT traditional n.s , the only thing the same, is that the skirts are long & full, my ribbon skirts came from my Latin American dance outfits, i even have a skirt design that came from my old Alice in Wonderland book i like to add alot of my own idea's to whatever i wear But im not a rock n roll girl ....................im a rockabilly girl I know what your like on here someone is bound to ask Girl on left - Rock n Roll Girl on right - Rockabilly Rockabilly clothing can be more wild, with a bit of Burlesque Debbie x

Do Soul People Like Live Bands ?
Soul.boy - Dont it Piss you off that some one of such great talent is in real terms nothing ? yet the crap that is in the charts make millions ! dont seem fair to me I totally agree! This is only my opinion........................ i have always only ever liked old music, but i think most of today's music is rubbish , i have not wanted to put a radio on since the 70's..........Ian will tell you that! Do Soul People Like Live Bands ?
I personally love a live act. but for me there has to be a band involved, no karaoke backing tracks. IAN I can get a bit bored when watching a live band hate it, if it's in a pub i suppose i just don't like just standing around for ages & being cramped against other people who barge into you & pour a drink down you I would not go to watch a Soul act, sorry folk's! most of them are quite old now, i prefer to remember them as they were When i do go to see a band, it has to be a Rockabilly band & in a large hall so i can have a good dance Debbie x

Northern V Scooter Scene
Yes i know what you mean I can't really comment on the scooter scene today, because i have not been for years, but thing's do change over the years. Most of the folk that i knew, dressed to the age of there scooter's in Mod clothing & only listened to 60's music, Northern, Ska & Rnb.........nowday's i see all sort's of folk with vintage scooter's, that are not interested in the music or clothing or living the lifestyle........................but it's the same on the Rockabilly scene, some people like the whole package & some just prefer part's of the scene..................i have always enjoyed the whole package my motto is...................if your going to do something, do the lot! Debbie x

Did You Go To Jazz Funk Nights ?
Don't tell Debbie..... but i used to love the venues that had Northern and jazz funk in seperate rooms. Hawaiin shirts and pegs, or cricket whites and dunlop green flash (honestly ). Tom Brown, Crown heights affair, Brass Construction, Al De meola, Mass Production, Roy Ayres, Hamilton Bohannon , Cleveland Eaton etc etc. a very eclectic mix of crossover jazz/disco/soul.. I enjoyed em I have seen this thread! JAZZ FUNK, WEARING CRICKET WHITES & DID YOU SAY DISCO ??? IAN NO, NO, NO Debbie x

A Question For Dancers Past And Present
Never practice for a Soul night, just like do my own thing The only thing i do have to practice in dancing, especially if im taking a medal exam or doing a dance exibition, is my Lindy, Jitterbug, Jive, Bal Boa, Charlston Latin American & Ballroom ............because these dance's have many many steps My partner Ian says he used to have a bit of a practice for a Soul night when he was a youngster, but not now.
