Debbie - The last thing i would want to do is, dance with a partner at a Soul event It was bad enough when i used to do competition Latin American & Ballroom, some of your partners were but i still had to smile! & its even worse for Lindy & Jive! WHAT A BUNCH OF THEY WERE! Just think about it!, my poor size 3 feet getting stamped on by some big size 9 PLEASE NO PARTNERS FOR NORTHERN SOUL!
  7. Ian - I was told whilst at the Brid weekender this year, that she was there. front centre of stage, big ribbons in her hair still in a circle skirt. she was with a couple of guys with very wide bags and another lass also. im sure there'll be a picture of her on one of the gallery albums. maybe someone can shed more light Debbie - Yes my love, Mrs. Casper(Susan)who is a friend of the family told me, that was the lady in the old Wigan photo, they always dance well & look very stylish, its nice to see people still on the scene after all these years, true dedication!

  9. Ian - Don't apologise wrongcrowd. Aretha is a wailing nightmare compared to Gladys Knight. 100% quality in her voice. pitch perfect everytime
  10. I watched her on 'Later' and was impressed as i thought i would be. i also saw Streisand on JR show and confirmed what ive always thought. . Gladys Knight nails tunes 100%, Streisand does'nt. Gladys Knight is and always will be my fave vocalist
  11. Debbie - That Velvet Satins track is one of my favorite records to dance to I have never found a record that is too fast to dance to, the faster the better i say! And when i do fancey something slow & relaxing to dance to, i have a gentle leap around to Gene Chandler-There Was A Time
  12. Debbie - I have probably spent far too much on records, clothing & going to venues! But yes its worth it!
  13. ahhh but it did .... someone who shall remain nameless played it at The Monaco ballroom . mind you, he nearly got lynched, even the 'oldies' brigade have some standards
  14. what would your response have been if it was'nt Pete who made that comment ?

I dont think people should get slagged off just because they enter the dance competitions, & i dont think they do it just to get attention or they want to be looked at Its just a bit of fun I would not enjoy entering myself, but i did end up in the Skeg competition by accident i was right at the back of the hall, so i did not hear that the comp had started, one of my fav records came on so i was up, after the second record i had realised i was in the comp, i felt quite sick & very stiff & could not wait to get off the floor, by the end i nearly ran off! so i think the folk who get up are very brave all i can say is well done for having the guts to get up it frightened the life out of me!

  17. well i just had another listen to the said tune....... ermmmm . not my cup o tea, very poor song writing, mr powell probably fancied a pop at recording I paid a fiver for Brenda & the tabulations - a love you can depend on. which is better? 24. what can i say that needs to be said about the building on parlaiment street? I first went there in feb 78 as a 15 yr old school kid. never ,missed a single event from then, through to the 100th all dayer and beyond ! A magical place that saw most of the population of Grantham boarding a train every first sunday of the month. I loved it, even when the mod revival hit around 79', they turned the 'bali hai' into a mod room and played some wonderful music down there. plus the jazz funk events on the revolving dancefloor. it all added to what was for me the 'mecca' (literally) of soul clubs around that time! Tony Clayton in his santa suit with a sack full of 'sweets' ? Gerri Thomas covered up as 'Zena Foster' by Soul Sam, Nev Wherry dancing, some lad leaping off the balcony thinking he could fly ?? Lots of memories of that place. I also saw my first live gig there. Jnr Walker & the all stars. i stood and watched in total awe as one of my music idols played that sax better than even imagined. a wonderful day indeed!
