A brief chat the other night got me thinking about the late and very great man. Just think about a top ten of the rare soul scene faves and it's a fair bet he's involved in some way, eg, Billy Woods, Kenny Shephard, Romance Watson, Jackie Wilson (I've lost you), Sandi Sheldon, Bill Harris, Maxine Brown ( wonder what my babys doing tonight) Faith hope and charity, David Ruffins' seventies output,Ilana (where would you be today) Chris Bartley, Chuck Jacksons' version of 'I can't stand to see you cry' et al and that's just a few rather obvious examples that I'm plucking from the air. Hard to believe he overcame personal and professional difficulites acheived all this in his twenties and died a very young man indeed without really getting the recognition he deserved. Basically what I'm saying is how difficult would it be to assemble a compilation of material to those of us 'in the know'? and what an album it would be. I suppose the obvious answer is bloody impossible given the myriad of publishers and label owners that would be involved thru' his creative period of the sixties and seventies. Be good tho' would'nt it Ady? Go on, you know you want to. Van rules in Stoke On Trent anyway Jim
  8. Zulema, 'Your so empty', just cant get it out of my mind, great Soul. Regards Jim.
  9. 'Are we losing touch'.... Perfection for the mellow fellows. Anyone know where I can get my grubby little mits on this beaut? Is it 45 or album only, got quite a few of Nancys' albums but not this. Thanks Jim.
  10. For us at Elliott towers, it's Emanuel Laskey 'Letter from Vietnam' and Michael Lizmore 'Promise that youll wait' Proper Soul and then some, Awesome. Jim
  11. Hi Does anyone know the 'going rate' for a minter? I've seen so much disparity I'm somewhat confused now. All the best Jim.

The Inspirations on the single sided promo, Breakthrough records 'No one else can take your place'. Who knows Jim
  13. I tell you what, I'm glad I was too young to attend Station Road, the way some folk go on about the place you would think the rare soul scene was wound up in 1981, I know the place was influential BUT IT IS NOW SHUT. Funnily enough about 10 years ago a certain quiet, retiring ex Blackpool dj was guesting on an ex Wigan dj's radio show and discussing the 'future of the northern soul scene' stating that he would hate to see it as a backward thinking 'teddy boy' type affair. At the time I remember thinking that would never happen, but now, and lets be honest here, things are a tad bizarre, whats with all the funny clothes never mind the music?! Missing the point Jim
  14. I'm sorry but 500 is taking the p"£s. It's a 20 pound record, a great record but 20 nonetheless. Oh well. Jim.
  15. Thanks guys, I think 2k-3k may be a tad out of my range! Anywhoo , at least the refosoul jedis' have helped me sleep a tad easier at night . I'll have to make do with a shimmy at Yarmouth instead Cheers Jim
  16. I have this on a tape from Richards show from about '99 when I think Arthur was on as a guest, an utterley incredible Snaith sound for me with a heavy Jerry Butler influence. However, thats all very well but I know sod all about said tune other than on my wage and recent events I'll never own one . I'm assuming very rare and exy. Has it ever been released on cd? Where there any other releases by this group and who were they? Seems a shame they didn't have more success but we always say that don't we? Frustrating to listen to on the old refosoul coz theres only about half of it on there. Cheers Jim
  17. I concur, but 'Look into the eyes of a fool' slays me everytime also. I'm sure Cleveland Horne wrote it. I'll have to get it out now . I wonder what would have happened to DB if he hadn't met his untimely end? Only 26ish years old as well. At least the brits are the custodians of his legacy, Jim
  18. Thanks Sean good god, I think I've got that cd somewhere in the loft and never played it . Doh. Darrells' is 'The' version tho', a lovely uk stax copy comes out most record room nites. Cheers Jim.
  19. Folks, Recently heard this (demo?) via a rather splendid interweb radio show, has this recently come to light or has it been around a spell? I'm assuming unreleased. Very nice it is too. Thanks Jim
  20. 22 years for me and the magics still there, so many great nights, Maxine and Ray Pollard among the best. Remember descending the stairs at the start of one nighter and Mick was tearing the place up with 'why when the love is gone', EVERYONE was dancing and it was only 2am . (Still miss Clarky tho ) Baby head wetting and 30 years in one night, top hole dear boy, top hole. Jim
  21. R.I.P, put me onto so many tunes via his scribings, a real soul searcher. Jim
  22. I'll never forget that night at Trentham. 'Bring back the love of yesterday' indeed. Rest in peace. Jim
  23. Crumbs, was just saying I thought the show and the guests guests were great , not sure there was any hero worshipping going on. Oh well. Jim
  24. Actually Eddie, on exploration in the loft said copy of Shades has been located and I think it was you who reviewed it for Derek in the first place! Will ping off my address in a bit. Cheers!! Jim.
  25. Folks First became aware of this Sam Dees penned wrist slashing opus via Mr Pearsons invaluable Soul research mag aka 'Shades of Soul' in 1996 and eventually got a rather ropey tape with it on to satisfy my hunger (thankfully refosoul refreshes the parts tapes cannot reach these days) Does anybody know if it ever came out on an album, or is it a 45 only affair? Expensive I assume? Ta Jim.
