Old Cover Up Titles
As a 13 year I was curious who sung a new record to me called 'aint no soul left in these old shoes since youve been gone' and took it hook line and sinker as my mates told me that it was 'Freeman Hardy and Willis' to the point of requesting it to a hyena laughing dj. Youth eh. Ed

The Strange World Of Northern Soul?
Seen this happen loads of times. Most general venues never last because the crowd stop coming due to the music is 'too rare' or 'too poppy'. As a rule of thumb, if the dancefloor is always full you've got the right mix, but if its not it wont be long before you get deserted. The 'right mix' is always determined by the crowd, not the DJ. a GREAT DJ works the crowd at any event and is not great just because they play expensive or shit rare records. Collectors get recognition for that. 'There was a time' might be the only record that dude felt easy about dancing to etc, so something like Sam Fletcher may be totally new to him if he has been away from the scene for 20 years etc. If you have a Jill Babylove - My Way or hit the highway, attitude you will be playing to yourself eventually. At least the record he wanted is a class 'overplayed' oldie, it could have have been 'Weakspot or Youre ready now' etc. Ed

Backfield In Motion - Mel & Tim
If you dont hear it for a couple of years its fine. Can someone explain what its all about, not having a clue about US sports. Is it football, baseball, or basketball. Did Mel and Tim make a crap version of 'free for all' on stax? Ed

And The Ones That Ya Got To Sit Down Too
Its amazing how when a record gets played to death, no matter how good it is, eventually clears a floor. Remember even in the late 70s 'Cause your mine' 'Its all over me' and 'Watch out girl' getting spun for the 3rd time etc cleared the decks. Nowt changes by the sound of things. Ed

You Cant Beat An Instrumental
This kind of comment keeps coming up on these forums about the 'bad old days' and some of the crap that was played. In fact the VAST majority of Northern Soul fans loved these 'Instrumental Dancers' and you could not get on the dance floors when they were played because of the popularity. Dont forget in the mid 70s the scene was driven by dancers, usually teenagers who could and would dance all night and the faster the beat the better. The scene then was about looking good in made to measures, being able to dance, and generally 'show off'. Ton of Dynamite, as an example has no soul content but was highly regarded if you had the stamina to get out on the floor. Its different now with the 'soul' content overiding the 'northern' element for various reasons but they were great times that have a place in history, warts and all. Going for a lay down now me backs gone doing a backdrop!!!!!!!!!! Ed

Philadelphia R&b Chart Week Ending 27 08 1968
A few months ago I started a post about what it was like in the US around that time and got some good replies. Although there was not apparantly a 'scene' as we know it, for people to buy 'M'LADY' that is essentially a dance record, there must have been 'discos' where people danced. I wonder if a certain part of the crowd picked up on the uptempo soul and danced in a similar fashion to folks in the UK etc. I hope some US readers can elaborate on how it was. Ed

Skiing In The Snow
Where did Skiing get played first? There are lots of NS records that make no sense , good and bad. For example. Your autumn of Tomorrow. Crow. Compared to what. Mr floods party. So is the sun. World Column They sound great if you 'DONT' listen to the lyrics, which most kids didn't at 15 years old. If you can dance to it, its worked. All these tunes packed the dancefloors. Remember! Ed

Wigan & Cleethorpes In The 1970's
Dave, you want to try and get a copy of 'so is the sun' with the cleethorpes anniversary sticker on it. Cleggy - vs- Wigan, depends what you judge on. Wigan had more folks through the gates, but played more pop music. Every venue was important, and these two very important. Where is volume 2 and 3 of the cleethorpes story CD, cant be due to lack of tunes. Ed

Eminem, Tupac & Other - Trade
Listen up. I have to endure all this kind of music from my kids, and have to say some of this stuff is not bad if you work on a ratio of 1 in a 100 tracks (only slightly worse than wigan - boom boom). Tupac was a soul man, read his lyrics. All this music came from our music anyway. Look how many new tracks are just reruns of old ones with reworking. Ed
