  1. Has anybody got first hand knowledge of 'the records' he requested his staff to play to the 'Northern lads who come to buy Northern Soul' whilst presumably on their way to a football match in London? By the way, I've no idea what 'box' The Crow fits in. Totally unique, great to dance to, but there is more soul in the Flasher............. Ed
  2. Gino 'I really love 'Washington, had his own tv show........... A natural at Detroit a go go.........2017 Ed
  3. Yes please, with quality like this: Ed
  4. Well... What.....can now be argued was a pop song blue eyed etc, but Tainted Love is right up there with the best of uptempo soul. Both obviously packed the dancefloor in their day. However there's no rules on what individuals should or should not like! Especially in the strange world of NS! Ed
  5. If you put yourself in Dave Godin's shoes, as say a 20 year old, who obviously loved a certain kind of music, and over the next few years various bands copy that music, but in his opinion it was not as good or even a rip off, you can imagine him 'expressing his discontentment' I'm sure most of us ' Northerners ' felt the same way about soft cell and tainted love. No denying though that some of these cherished original artists made some money from it or at the very least some recognition. The recording music business was always about money anyway. I'm sure all the deep soul treasure cd's were hopeful of returning a profit, not just educating the masses. Ed
  6. No musical style called Northern Soul? That's going to piss off the badge and patch wearing, tattoo inflicted, flat cap and 40 inch bottom baggies brigade, for sure Those folks have been trying to define it since Davie Boy 'quoted it'............they will be gobsmacked:) A way of life totally destroyed. For sure then, Dave must have only liked a few tunes of the musical style he coined a phrase for, if he only liked soul, in its purest sense. Ed
  7. Did Dave Godin 'like' northern soul ? Obviously not every tune, but in general? Ed
  8. Pray tell......... What happened? There wasn't a note read out from MJ was there? Ed
  9. I can't imagine it would have ever got a general release. Brilliant Northern Soul, but rubbish Motown Soul, compared to other Motown productions of the time. Frank could not sing! Or at least not to the Motown standard. Even the song only got tested on Chris Clark, so Berry probably could not stand that either. Frank and Berry made the right choice....imo. Ed
  10. Were test presses for quality purposes, then demos for 'yes or no' to production purposes? So about 6 test presses, and 6 demos in total, at the most, we're physically produced. Berry said sing or write, Frank said write, Berry said bury the demos. 3 demos survived....but did the others really get destroyed? A test press surfaced eventually that was a shock, so if the other 3 demos ( or even 1) surface it would be an even bigger shock Ed
  11. Would the 6 have all been identical? I'm sure I read Berry ordered all copies to be destroyed? But 3 slipped the net? Was it normal for every motown record to initially have 6 demos made before it got the thumbs up or down for general release? Ed
  12. He was his teacher? Ed
  13. Frank signed this bar folder for me in 2004 at the LA gig. Can't see anybody but a 'Wendy' finding it valuable..... Ed
  14. If the words 'Kenny, indeed I do' were not on the label, it may have little effect, but its bound to have limited the number of folks who would buy it, in my opinion. Ed
  15. You are right, it is a 10" 78 rpm according to various sites. The record in John's video could well be the most expensive 45 normal issued record money has changed hands for. A one-sided acetate of the Beatles 1963 single Love Me Do is worth £80,500 – as there’s only one known pressing, so they say on TEAMROCK.COM Then again, worth value and sold value may be different. Would this DILYIID be worth $35k or more upon sale with the writing on it today? or less? What did this topic subject 'disc' actually sell for? Will it ever be known? Ed
  16. Listen again my friend, John says the rarest and most expensive 45. No mention of rarest or most expensive soul 45. Ed
  17. Rarest and most expensive? That’ll Be The Day by The Quarrymen Value: £100,000 [€117,153/$123,167] (some say £200,000) A 1958 single by a pre-Beatles line-up comprised of Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison, plus drummer Colin Hanton and pianist John Duff Lowe. No Ringo. Original test pressing of course.. Ed
  18. So in your topic of conversation, which other events of this ilk got discussed that prompted your question? Surely you can't have based it on a single second hand account? Ed
  19. Recession Brexit Cold Weather Skint after Xmas Dwindling numbers? Or Seasonal variation? Any number of reasons I suppose, if it's a one off hit. If anything, looking at the event diary on here, it's growing in demand not receeding. Ed
  20. Very soulful voice and the pop tunes get better with age. Sad news of his passing. Ed
  21. Would love to have the Major included in the HOF Was he that good at the TORCH live concert? Sounds like he had a fascinating life: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Lance Ed
