Is this the locally famous BUB?
Yup, fittest guy on the bus, who just happened to be knelt up talking to Bub, on the wrong side at the wrong time, and it tipped due to taking the corner too quick on a reverse camber. Driver could not slow down, and the steering locked. Just a miracle nobody else died, although plenty with broken bones and scars. Bub's massive United tattoo gone in seconds. Bad memories all round. I was in that crash. 3 defective brakes, and 3 defective tyres. Bastards put us back on another 29 seater coach from the same company to take us home. Ed

Is this the locally famous BUB?
Well for sure if you turn this topic into a tribute for Bub.....a thousand tales could be told. DJ 's the all dayers at Cleethorpes WG amongst many other venues, and you had no idea what was coming on next! The human zoo, I love music, Festival time....whatever he felt like, and the crowd loved him. Ed

Is this the locally famous BUB?
Hard to imagine it's nearly 20 years ago the big fella passed away. Not sure what happened to his collection, but the records would have all been clean from him wiping them on his jumper before playing them. Can't imagine he would deface a record unless it was big money. Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
Most records listed so far could be considered normal. UK releases, Motown imports, Atlantic//Stax/etc Perhaps had to find, but not unique. Now we are getting US labels like Soul Power and Mandingo stated as Wheel tunes. It must have been a big shift when that happened. No doubt some Wheelers may not have appreciated it, as presumably between 65 and 70 they must have been able to get their hands on most of the tunes played. I've also noted the inclusion of exclusivity, where you want to hear these new super rare records, you had to go to the event where the DJ was playing. That must have been a throwback to when the wheel first started playing the rare and hard to get UK dance records. You guys who lived through it from say 65 onwards were so lucky! Ed

So all the DJ's had records of this quality and rarity? It must have been the beginning of the end of playing 'normal' records easy to get etc Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
Great record. Who played it, what year, and where was it likely to have come from? Just wondering when the rare stuff started to get played. Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
I think in hindsight, your musical tastes and observations develop from say being a 14 year old to a 20 year old, so young kids who got fed on Marie Day, Gary Lewis, thought it was great, whilst the more mature kids were giving some serious WTF is this crap. Quality shines through and I'm sure the WORST of the Wheel, Torch, Mecca, Wigan, SAMs, Cleggy will never get rejuvenated, but the BEST will always stand the test of time. Who decides what fits where is another story, and great debate! Ed

Would it be correct to say that the Wheel played 'dance records' regardless of whether it was a black soul artist or not? Were the punters divided on this principle, or pretty much in agreement? The reason I ask is that when I joined 'the scene' around 76 and started going to nighters etc, it was apparent that records like Tim Tam, Peggy March, Muriel Day got a load of bad press because they simply were 'too poppy'. Nobody can deny they were 'danceable'. That seems to contrast the earlier scene with Scratchy, Fife Piper, and such like that have no 'soul' content, but great dancers. Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
So, please tell me, any member who was there when TW Scratchy got played first, what the dancefloor reaction was? Heard this first around 76, and I've no idea why I love it? It's unique and mad as hell. Nothing much more 'fringe' ever been played than this. The breaking DJ must have had nerves of steel, banging this on after William Bell, Otis, Sam etc Ed

News to me...but I will look for it. Cheers Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
No offence taken. Just fascinated by lots of stories about the wheel. The youngster showing up with unheard of gems is just one of them, and the willing jocks who gave them a spin is another. It was a progressive cutting edge venue at the start of a revolution in youth culture.... Patrons were truly blessed to have been part of it. Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
Well Joey, as I stated I was never there, and only quoted a story I've read. If you were there from the late 60s up to the end, and witnessed his limited influence, then I accept your account. Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
But the topic is about the Twisted Wheel, not a general topic, and my comment was about Levine's influence at that club. I also indicated if the mention of Levine's name effects the impact of the impact, so to say, call the new kid on the block Smith or Jones etc. I think the largest topic ever on this site was about Ian Levine, a couple of years ago, and I think every member and their granny commented. Seriously if you were djing now, and a kid turns up with a record like Hit and Run and you've probably never heard of the label or artist let alone the tune, and you take a chance and play it, and the dancefloor goes crazy AND it's not the first time it's happened, what would you think of that kid? Just trying to put perspective on the impact of tunes broke at the wheel, and how it happened. Forget the kids name was Levine.. Ed

Twisted Wheel - Sounds ?
I never went unfortunately but have bought a couple of cd's many years ago with supposedly some of the best tunes big at the wheel. I love the stories of this young kid called Levine showing up with tunes he had discovered whilst on holiday in the states and begging the dj's to give them a spin. Rose Batiste Hit and Run being one of them. What must they have thought of him? Priceless Ed
