  1. Seriously... I heard a term Was not sure what it meant Asked the question Got the answer. Got several answers. Got several examples. Grateful to those who obliged. The penny dropped. That's it Hopefully I was not on my own, but I'm not bashful at asking even at the expense of appearing a bit dim I guess topic closed, question answered, objective achieved, mission accomplished. Ed
  2. At what point have I offered a bad opinion of upfront? Contrare.... Its always been upfront, with a sideshow of oldies only. I also don't Diss oldies only. I'm sure many soul source's will be joining me at LV2018 in March when no doubt we will hear the best of both as well as meeting the originators. Ed
  3. Nope, just acknowledging I more understand the term, after a few explanations were offered. I was also listening to this music and attending venues 28 years before I joined this site! Got on here after LA2004 where it was recommended there. If I could play a couple of up front records over the last few years it would be these. What a dance beat.. Obviously before they charted.... Maybe some DJs did? Ed
  4. Ok, I'm getting the jist of it now. Essentially anything goes as long as it's not the top 500 and it's pushing the boundaries, and searching the archives. Just never heard the term before. Its what the scene was all about anyway. Same old same old never happened, and I guess Stafford is the stand out event that refused to stop breaking new or underplayed forgotten sounds. Many threads on here about brand new records getting spun at all nighters and I'm glad it continues. Discoveries between 1970 and 1980 were so plentiful and great, that many tunes got pushed aside for another time, but I won't be slagging off the top 500 or 5000 for that matter because they are the tunes that relate to many memories and history is important. The material to tap into beyond the top 500 is vast though, and even with some simple playing about on YouTube can unearth many forgotten tunes. Ed
  5. Please educate me 'as someone from the back of the queue'.....what this is? What are the big tunes of the day? Ed
  6. The 'upfront scene' ? I need to get out more............. That track is about as on the edge of Northern Soul as this old Mecca tune. Never heard it played out either. Ed
  7. But he does not give an example of what he means? He says Don't play them new records from the American chart, play them these sort Northern Soul records. Ignore the backing music, that's added later along with everything else. I still think there's a slight hint of sarcasm. Maybe there is an extended interview where he explains. Ed
  8. Zertainly... Zit back and turn this up and enjoy a great record from back in the day... Ed
  9. Sounds like a bit of nudge nudge wink wink to me.... Pity we can't ask Dave RIP what he really meant...uptempo soul, in its truest form ? Or the weird and wonderful uptempo sounds that these Northerners like. Being a Motown man, I wonder what he thought of stuff like there's a ghost in my house and the night?? Anybody on here knew him well? Ed
  10. What other tracks, apart from the bottle, and please list or include a youtube link, have ever been played at Northern Soul all nighters regularly from the former Celtic player's son's back catalogue? Ed
  11. If it was indeed Dave Godin who actually coined the phrase 'Northern Soul', and considering he was a pure soul fan, being subjected to SCRATCHY, COMPARED TO WHAT, GREEN DOOR, and such like, was he was actually taking the P*** ? We all know that the majority of back in the day NORTHERN SOUL is at the edge of the soul spectrum, and that's pushing it. BUT here's the BUT, I don't think being a 'soul' record was the first criteria for the DJ's of the day to plug a record. Every big name DJ has had ago at defining Northern Soul, but the conclusion is its undefinable beyond a generalisation. The generalisation is that you get it or you don't get it , and its a STRANGE WORLD to quote the best definition. Surely we are all past the point of justification by now, and its more appreciation of the history and great times associated with the 'Scene'. Ed
  12. Nothing like a bit of Gospel inspiration in a soul singer and or song. RIP Edwin.
  13. Used to love this little poppy dancer Ed
  14. I think the point of the thread was to introduce a rare disk that had just come the attention of the author, who kindly showed pictures and details. No mention was made about how good it was as a record on today's scene. The disc kind of got investigated and interrogated to a point where it was largely agreed it was genuine. Then the thread diversified beyond belief! No wonder Mike intervened! Ed
  15. An interesting point. When it first got played, I can't remember anybody slagging it off. Certainly a big record for Wigan Casino, and possibly one of the biggest ever Northern Soul records of all time, even though it come quite late in the 70s. I actually think it got even more popular amongst the masses because of the cd and adverts and hype about its history. In any case, the subject can't be far off running it's course. Dedadoo. Ed
  16. Good call.............Brenda Holloway, Pat Hunt, Patrice Holloway ...........Not sure who the lead is.

  22. Very good, but this is what I'm talking about..RIP the great WH Play it loud and listen well Ed
  23. I just LUV the screamers, and this girl can really get there. Equal to the late great Linda Jones. Ed
  24. Backtrack to S......yes S Label spello.. Ed
  25. As suggested, you are either into or not into DILYIID. For me it's absolutely the greatest NORTHERN soul record out there. The story and rarity behind it, contribute to the reason why. The impact it had when first played as a cover up and then even on UK release ( I was at Wigan the night the UK demos were handed out) all help to give it the title. Not even in the the top 500 greatest soul records. Frank can't sing, the lyrics are messy, the clarity is poor, bla bla bla.... But, as a definition of what makes a NORTHERN soul record, this is it. Feel free to disagree, but put a logical reason why, not simply you are sick of hearing it. Ed
