Chris. To be honest I can't be arsed carrying on this argument, but as a final comment I would just like to clarify one or two points you have brought up and rectify some mistakes. We started Ormskirk Soul Club at the Comrades Club on Saturday 31st March 2007 (after running events at Ormskirk Civic Hall for the previous 3 years) and held events on the fourth Saturday of the month after that, on Saturday 28th April and Saturday 26th May. We finished the events at the Comrades Club due to problems with the venue and moved to Burscough British Legion, again holding our events on the fourth Saturday of the month starting on 30th June 2007. As far as I am aware we never clashed with either the Monaco Soul Club or Formby Halls during this time (Monaco has always been 1st Saturday of the month and Formby Halls 3rd Friday and now 3rd Saturday)----indeed these two events are run by the same promoters so why would they be held on the same night? As for Middlewich British Legion we have never considered it to be a local venue (too far away from Ormskirk or Burscough) so it would not have affected the planning of any of our event dates. The music policy at Burscough Legion was completely different to Ormskirk Civic Hall-----the Civic was always an oldies venue, Burscough has more of an underplayed musical policy. We started running nights at the Civic again in tandem with the Legion because local people asked us to----the music policy at the Legion was not to their liking and they wanted a place to go locally. However,we could never get a regular date at the Civic and therefore held the events when the venue was available but always tried not to clash with other local venues. However the Civic proved untenable in financial terms so we stopped the events for good after just a few events. Ormskirk Civic was already an established venue when we ran our Motown and Classic Soul events, it had been run for the previous three years by us so it was not a new event but a continuation of an existing one----we ran two completely different events a few miles apart with seperate music policies and mostly a different crowd at each one. As I have said before I do not want a slanging match with you, but you state that you do not run any other events other than Radcliffe. If you are prepared to bring up things from 2007 then you should also remember an event from a few months ago that you helped to co-promote---the Stafford Reunion. I also mentioned that your event does not have a great affect on our venue as it only clashes 2--3 times a year. When I posted my original comments they were aimed at other local promoters more than yourself, but you are the only one who has replied. As for the numbers at our venue being on the wane this is far from the truth. Considering where we are located and the type of music we play we have always done well with consistent numbers attending our events from all over the North West and beyond. We could have taken the easy route and gone down the oldies road---we would definitely have had higher attendances but we chose not to do this. Our numbers are as good now as when we first started and show no signs of dropping off----new people come to Burscough constantly along with a hard core of regular punters so I don't think I have to look any closer to home. This is the last I will write on this subject, you are welcome to come over to Burscough at any time and we will extend the same welcome to you that we do to everyone else who attends our events. Thats very true Paul, if this venue takes place it will be the fourth event to be taking place in Warrington------why? The only reason I can possibly think of is money-----pack 'em in, play overplayed bootleg oldies and count the cash. The amount of venues in this area is staggering-----not just Warrington but everywhere in a thirty mile radius of Manchester, why do we need more?

I was merely stating the facts as I see them----when we started the Legion there were no other local nights on and now there are. Is it wrong to say this? Yes you have in the past sent out our details on your mailing list, and thanks for that. The point I was trying to make was the profusion of events which in my opinion is spoiling the scene as a whole. To be honest your events are probably the least of our worries as they take place on a bi-monthly basis on the last Saturday of the month and only clash with us probably 3 or 4 times a year. Which is a shame in itself because we would probably support your nighters on a regular basis if this clash of dates did not occur. I do not want to become part of a slanging match with you, the facts are that we were running our events before any of the other venues started up in this area---we have never altered our dates and have always run on the fourth Saturday of the month.

From a purely personal point of view I would just like to add my views. We started Burscough Legion three years ago simply because we wanted to offer something a little bit different to the bog standard bootleg oldies venues that were being run (and still are) in this neck of the woods. Our music policy has always been a mix of underplayed oldies, uptempo R&B, lesser played tunes, etc and we have stuck with this policy throughout our time at the Legion. We chose to run our events on the fourth Saturday of each month as at the time there was nothing on locally to clash with. Since we started three new events have started up within 30 miles of us---two nighters and a soul night, and in each case all of these venues are being organised by people who also run at least one other venue. To put it simply, its killing the local scene---these people don't give a shit about established venues and the effect their events have upon them. On another note the amount of weekenders springing up around the country is also a major cause of declining numbers at established soul events. Just my opinion, of course.

I agree with the criticisms. Its not a question of who has put this CD out, it is just another money making scheme amongst so many others by the same crew. Have a look at the bootlegs on ebay put out by this lot to confirm my point.- Keele Early 90's When
Anyone remember the minutes silence for Pete Lawson? Immediately followed by "Girl across the street?" And they handed out copies of the Ormskirk Advertisers front page with Petes story as the headline.- Levi Stubbs
A true legend in every way----very very sad news indeed. RIP Levi, your memory will live on in your music.- Paul Ogrady
Too true, looks like Liam etc have joined the Casino Circus--------- what are they appearing on next, celebrity Northern Soul dancin' on ice? Glad to see the younger generation keeping the Wigan flag flying................- burscough british legion saturday 25th. october
- O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
I've been reading this thread with interest and would just like to comment on one or two of the opinions expressed in it. We run a venue that likes to think of itself as being a little different to most of the others in the area---quite difficult in this part of the country as it seems to be dominated by the Wigan oldies brigade. This manifests itself in the profusion of venues that operate in the locality, venues that spin not only 100% overplayed oldies but which also play boots, cd's, reissues, etc. I will not name these venues on here but within a 30 mile range I can think of over a dozen just off the top of my head. The reason we started the soul nights at Burscough British Legion was simply to offer something different---we never claimed to be ultra rare or tried to compete with the nighters, we just wanted an alternative music policy. We play only 100% original vinyl and as I said before we steer away from the top 500, not an easy thing to do in this neck of the woods. Many of the tunes we play are what I would call "underplayed oldies", mixed with nighter sounds and some rareities. We have endured criticism from all sides because of this---the oldies brigade who don't know most of the stuff we play and aren't prepared to give it a try and certain people on here who object to us running monthly soul nights which may or may not interfere with their precious allnighter scene. We run our nights on the same Saturday of each month and we have clashed from time to time with some allnighters. This is not intentional and indeed it is the nighters that have changed their dates, so who is to blame? Are we not allowed to run monthly soul nights or do we have to get permission from the allnighter promoters before we arrange our dates? A number of people attend our venue and then go on to a nighter when these date clashes occur, so where is the conflict of interest there? Sorry to go on a bit but some people on this forum are so far up their own behinds that they should shave their arses and walk backwards.- burscough british legion----saturday 28th. june
- 60s Soul & Ska Night, Southport
Hi there.....cheers for that, nothing planned at the moment but we'll see how Saturday goes----we've had quite a lot of interest in it so far. I'll keep you posted. Tony- 60s Soul & Ska Night, Southport
Don't know if this is the right place to put this, but here goes! Work Your Soul!! Saturday 17th. May 2008 sees the second night of 60s Club Soul, Ska, Rocksteady, Blue Beat, R&B and Skinhead Reggae at the Grandstand Club, Southport FC, Haig Avenue, Southport. PR8 6JZ. Our first event took place a couple of months ago at the same venue and although the numbers attending were only between 30---40 it was a great night. The music was a mix of 60s soul, R&B and original Jamaican ska, rocksteady, etc. Everyone had a ball---so much so that we were invited to do another by the clubs management. So if you fancy listening to some of this stuff come along to the Grandstand Club on the 17th. May-----should be a crackin' night and we expect the attendance to be well up as the word has got round about how good the first one was! The night runs from 7.30pm----12.30am and admission is £4 on the door-----so come along for a superb night of moonstompin' sounds! - Complete Beginners Guide To Northern Soul
