  1. Great record, love the female backing vocals. Alan
  2. I was surprised at £1042 for Gene Toones; I thought it would have been much more. Is £1k the going rate for that now? Alan
  3. [quote name='KEN-SOUL' timestamp='1282722441' post='1399845' " what was that cnut doing having a fit on the floor at the end~???"

I like it a lot. Stands up well in it's own right, he puts his own stamp on it making it more than a pale imitation that so many Motown covers were. Alan

There was certainly nothing furtive about it; it was explained on BBC radio a year or so back. https://postbocks.com/audio/download/2992/Kevin+McCardle+Craig+Charles.mp3 Alan
  6. I love The Dells - It's Not Unusual. Great vocals, but probably considered too cheesy because of the Tom Jones version. Alan
  7. I think it also had Percy Millem - Call On Me
  8. The ones I remember offhand are: Al Wilson - The Snake Gloria Jones - Tainted Love The Tams - Be Young, Be Fooish, Be Happy Yvonne Baker - You Didn't Say A Word World Column - So Is The Sun Porgy & The Monarchs - If It's For Real Gabrielle Climi - On A Magic Carpet Ride (over the closing credits) I saw it a few weeks ago and can't remember now. Possibly Eddie Foster - I Never Knew (but I might be imagining that). Nothing horrendous like Footsie! Alan
  9. I like this a lot, though the vocals are a bit too pop for armchair listening. I think I read somewhere that this did get some plays back in the Stafford days. I got a copy off eBay rock section a couple of years back listed under the flip side. Was quite cheap too, probably because seller made prominent comments about a scratch on the flip. Alan
  10. It's just played over the closing credits, and thankfully not in one of the live scenes (which would have prompted even more complaints on here about historical inaccuracy of the film). Alan
  11. The Cleethorpes Pier podcasts you put up a while back had great clapping - Spellbound, What A Difference A Day Makes, Reaching for the Best etc. Even made Hubert Laws - Chicago Theme sound good. Alan
  12. I saw the film yesterday and enjoyed it. Thought it was well acted, though plot was rather weak. Would rate it 7 out of 10 The dance-off at the end was a bit cringy, but I could understand the need for some sort of climax for the film. What alternative ends could they have had? - hero gets asked to DJ the following week? ...has a big record find at a boot sale? Soundtrack ranged from cheesy (The Snake) to the sublime (Porgy & Monarchs: If It's For Real). The dancing clips from This England were well integrated with the recent shots. I think most people on here would quite enjoy it, provided they're not expecting it to be a soul equivalent of Saving Private Ryan. Alan

Richard Domar has one for sale for £30 (will probably be at least Ex). https://www.domarrecords.co.uk/usaorig17.htm Alan
  14. Biggest seller - Tighten Up? Hi everybody, I'm Archie Bell of the Drells... Alan
  15. Thanks very much everyone, great service! Alan
  16. Thanks, but it's not this - no spoken intro and it's faster. (Devotions is great tho') Alan
  17. Hi, on an old tape I've got a snippet of a record that begins with a guy saying "Please help me find this record, it goes something like this...". He then sings the tune to Dum, Dum, Dum... Then a guitar and drum kick in, sparse like Sliced Tomatoes. Then the tape stops, so I don't know if it's all instrumental or if there is a vocal! I'm intrigued to hear the rest. Could anyone help identify this. Thanks Alan
  18. Some of my favourites are: Harold Burrage - A Long Way Together (great B side) Five Dutones - Nobody But My Baby (bouncy sound, reminds me of CODs-Michael) Does a record on one of these labels share similar backing track to Morris King's - Broadway Time? Maybe I'm imagining it, but I thought there was one by Otis Clay or Johnny Sayles but I can't remember what it is. Alan
  19. I've never heard the Barry Monroe version of Never Again. Is it any good? Alan
  20. Loretta Williams - Baby Cakes also on red Atlantic is even worse I think. Alan
  21. I think you're missing the point describing the collectable UK releases (of US originals) as reissues. In the main they were the contemporary UK "editions" of US releases. A similar point could be made, for example, about US releases of Beatles records - many people collect these, and not just the UK issues on Parlophone. Most UK soul collectors distinguish (and look down on) those records that were specifically reissued to cater for demand in the 70s onwards from the Northern soul scene. I do agree that people collect because of what it means to them - and UK releases on Stateside, London etc do evoke memories for people, like me, of a certain vintage. Alan
  22. If you find out what it is could you post the artist & title on here. thanks Alan
  23. Vocals a bit poppy for you I'd have thought, though it does sound great played out. Alan
  24. What, do you mean you haven't kept copies of all your Beat'n' Rhythmns? If you're wanting to fill gaps, would "bootlegs" (photocopies) do, or are you just looking for originals? Alan
  25. 4th commandment: you must not publish a fanzine dedicated to UK releases. Alan
