What do auction prices tell us about current values
Your assessment is almost correct but more important is, bidding increment and how many bidders. Lots of people take a daft punt at auctions and throw in a very low bid in the hope that only a few people have seen the auction. This does happen occasionally on ebay where the seller gets the description wrong and bargains can be had. If you look at JM's auctions in particular you will usually see that for the higher value records there are loads of undervalue bids but most of these drop out before it reaches anywhere near it's correct value. What normally happens is that it ends up with just 2 bidders fighting it out and very often we see final prices at way over real values, do you remember the JD Martin that went for something like £1400.00? complete madness but it took more than one person to create that. So auction prices do not only reflect one person's view they show what at least 2 people would pay because often the increment is only £5.00 or less. I am a bit of obsessive about the condition of the records that I buy and often walk by rare records at quite low prices just because the label is a bit tatty of has writing on it and spend hours looking for upgrades of records that I already have in my collection, just to try to get that perfect copy. In doing this I will say that in the past I have sometimes paid too much. I keep a spreadsheet of my collection with approximate values for insurance ( lets face it if my house burned down, how would I ever rebuild a collection that has taken me over 50 years to build) but I value them at current realistic price which is on some occasions is a bit less than I paid. Hope this helps

News: The Most Sought After Rare Northern
Great article, sorry that I missed it first time around. I have about 20 of them and there are 3 or 4 that I have owned but sold because I actually didn't really like the record, I just bought them because I have the cash at the time and knew that if I held onto them for a few years they would go up in value, which they all did.😉

Inter City Soul Club
The Chelsea Village was the end of Northern Soul nights for Keith Clark, us locals owe him a huge debt of gratitude for all of the great music that he and Steve Sheppard introduced us to. The first soul night he held were in a workings men's club , it was a tiny place above a shoe shop in Boscombe. This was towards the end of 1971 and me and my mates were only 14 and it finished after the last bus had gone which meant a 6 mile walk home! Thankfully a few months later he moved it to a small room above a beef burger restaurant in Bournemouth called Busters, which halved the walk home, we had some great night there and met some great people, some who are still good friends today.

Inter City Soul Club
Inter City were involved in nights at The Chelsea Village Bournemouth around 74/75 but John Harvey was not part of it, I do remember him from from Yate, mostly because he played disco/funk which was not why we were there but be honest I do not remember him being involved with Inter City. Kev Roberts came a long a few times but the nights had evolved from some great very small venues rune by Keith Clark and Steve Sheppard, they stated in about 72 and were my first intro to "proper northern soul" both great people with some great records between the and Keith organised my first trip to Wigan in 73, I was only 15 at the time!. My only memory of Inter City was that the bastards still owe me £5 that I paid as deposit to a trip that they had arranged to the first Wigan anniversary but they did a runner with everyone's money

Frank Wilson Sells for a Million Quid!!!!!!!!!!
I just picked this up from Tim Brown's Rare Soul Vinyl newsletter. Peronally I am devastated that he did not put it up for auction because I would have paid him at least £1.5m STOP PRESS - Frank Wilson sells for a million quid! Yes its my copy... and Paul Pugba just couldn't resist. I handed it over with a full face mask and tongs used for handling enriched plutonium borrowed from Sellafield. TikTok was not present. Despite comments from other sources he knew it played okay as he was at the Ritz 'Rarest Of The Rare' allnighter when I played it in front of 1200 people.

Good Records to buy on a budget.
Paul Capon suggested this, which is spot on. Take a look at most of the Dells stuff and you will find some real gems for peanuts, just because they were pressed in the tens of thousands and for some reason nobody wants them.

Good Records to buy on a budget.
It really depends if you want buy only original copies of if you are happy with bootlegs and reissues? In my opinion bootlegs are the scourge of our scene and anyone selling them should be strung up, but that's my opinion, lots of others think differently and are happy to buy them. Reissue are fine if they are official release by record companies or independent labels that are paying the royalties and of course there are loads of CD's and LP's available that will give you access to loads of really very rare recordings for next to nothing. The choice if yours. Paul

Northern Soul - Film - 5 years on - Film4 Tue nite
For me it really missed the point. When I saw the trailers of the kids learning to dance I was genuinely excited because Soulboy which was such a disappointment but when I saw it I was just amazed at how it missed the point by as much. I was 15 years old when I first went to Wigan in late 1973 and sure there were loads of drugs and most but of us did partake BUT in the end it was all about the music and the dancing and the friendship and the atmosphere, and the exclusivity. So sorry Elaine,, you may have made few quid out of it but you are most definitely not Mrs Northern Soul and you missed a great opportunity to show the world what it was really like but instead you made a film about some lads who took loads of drugs and just happened to be into some soul music that was not meanstream.

Wigans Chosen Few Footsie BBC Totp 1975
I almost died of embarrassment the night that this appeared on Top of The Pops. My whole family gathered around the TV to find out what me and my mates had been getting up to at those strange all night clubs that we went to. They took the piss for months and months. It was crap then and it is even worse now and all of the posers who danced on this and who went to Wigan the night Granada turned up to make their crap program should be shot!. They were the people who trashed our scene in the late 70's, they brought the bus loads of stiffs into our clubs. These are the same people who ran to the stage at Wigan for the poxy dance competitions, while the rest of us ran for Mr M's!
