Hello all, I'm currently designing a flyer and I'm trying to collect images of labels with the song title "Breakaway". I've got a white promo of Steve Karmen and Irma Thomas on an issue (if that counts), but none of the others. I've gone through and searched Anorak's Label Scans and turned up very low quality versions for my purposes. This is something that will be printed, so I'm looking to get 300DPI resolution scans in JPEG format of these labels. They don't have to be white demos, in fact, the more colorful, the better. 72DPI Web images are not suitable for this particular project. There are a lot of songs called "Breakaway" so I'm sure a few of you own them. If you have scans that you could do for me, I'd truly appreciate it. Please e-mail them directly to: jazzyjas@bellsouth.net Thanks in advance, Jason

Dave, Got one in that little packet that I put together for you. It's a red sleeve. You should find it in there when you get home. KTF Jas
  7. Lots of serious dancers in the US dance as couples (like the Beach scene). The concept of dancing alone like the northern soul scene just BARELY exists over here. And the average person that goes to clubs isn't very serious about music over here either. It's just a background thing. They are usually there to drink, pick someone up, or score drugs. The music is purely incidental. Most people over here just accept what's dished out to them whether it's new crappy hip hop, insipid R&B garbage or whatever. That picture of the Americans dancing just sums it up perfectly--completely dorky clueless whitebred idiots driking jello shots and dancing to 50 cent. Just slow and easy-nothing too complicated. Specialty nights are getting more popular over here so that's a good thing. This means people that are more serious about music are showing up but even still, mostly females are dancing. I really like the Carolina shaggers or "Hand Dancers" as they call them in Marlyand and Virginia. Chicago steppers are fantastic too. Lots of old black folks on that scene. They effortlessly flow with the music. The mod nights that happen over here seem to have more guys dancing and it's a little bit closer to the UK in the way that they dance alone and not with a partner. I think that it's a bit uptight and stiff, but that's just my opinion. But no matter what the scene is over here, the amount of really IMPRESSIVE dancers is woefully low. The black folks have it nailed. They are just better dancers on the whole in my opinion. As for northern soul, I've got to give the credit to people on the West Coast. When I was at the LA Weekender, I saw very few American people dancing "northern soul" style. I was one of the few. But there's a guy named Justin out in LA who is an absolute ace with acrobatics and spins. He was the only one keeping up with Carl, too. He's been to the UK and he shows up in Roxy Threads pants. He knows the deal. Also have to mention--Thanks to people like Mike Umholtz REAL northern soul nights are getting put on-not some mod-ye ye-boogaloo soul mish mash- I mean a PROPER night. Now that's what I'm talking about! I'm sick and tired of northern soul being lumped in with everything else. I like those other styles but let's be consistent. Many of the places I've been over the years have pretty lame dancers in my opinion. The deep house scene in Baltimore had some great modern soul house music being played and I picked up some excellent moves on that scene. Lots of great dancers at those nights. But on the whole, people over here on the whole don't take dancing very seriously. I wish things would be more like the disco age when people would practice in dance studios and have a little class about them. There's a lot of girls that dance like total whores and guys that seem clueless and just trying to rub up on them. It's lame as hell when total frat-boy meatheads infiltrate a cool club where house is being played. They just come and ruin it because the sports bar three doors down was too full. It sucks because a lot of the house music dancers are very serious and are there for the music instead of just trying to hook up with people. Going to good nights where deep house music is played is the closest you'll get to a scene the resembles the soul scene in the UK. Hats off to all you UK dancers. Your moves are the best and I'm taking it all in and adding things to my bag of tricks on the floor. Northern soul dancing is the greatest and can't be touched. KTF Jas
  8. I'm in agreement with Shane on this one. I think a good film with a good story will go over with a universal audience. The northern soul thing should just be incidental, a backdrop. I don't think northern soul as a subject is worthy of a movie plot. It's perfect documentary fodder as it's this "odd" thing that has to explained over and over again to the masses. If it's a period piece or even set in modern times, it should be enough to have a just have a killer soundtrack and some really good dance scenes. Done deal. I'm also all for a good British or Irish comedy with one or more of the characters being a northern soul nut. In the movie "Once Upon a Time in the Midlands" I imagined what it would have been like if Rhys Ifans' character was full-on into soul. Remember how he drove around to "Bar B Q" by Wendy Rene? That's good stuff! That could have been built up to add to his character. The country guy up the street was brilliant. It seems like working it into the plot is the way to go, not another pastiche thing like "Quadrophenia" so to speak. No matter what happens, anoraks will pick it apart but everyone will probably enjoy it anyway. Good scripts and good actors make good movies in the end. My opinions... I hope it comes out and it's done well. KTF Jas PS. Shirley Henderson playing a northern soul DJ would really make me happy. She would make a good Anorak vinyl fiend. We can only dream...
  9. The Sweet Three - That's The Way It Is (When A Girl's In Love) - Decca MAN! You really got me on this one, Mark. I absolutely love this record! First class sound. I'm after a copy of this record is somebody's got one. KTF Jas

Women in general are better dancers than men because they seem to be really in tune to the music and use their whole bodies. Men are great at technical aspects of dancing and can have just as much style, but women seem to just have an effortless quality to the way they do it. My mother came out to watch me play some soul records once and was one of the most brilliant dancers there. In fact, she was dancing northern style and didn't know it. I was very impressed and so was everyone else. As for female northern soul dancers, I really enjoy watching them. Northern soul dancing in general is a super-cool thing in my book. I wish people would document this more. I've got Andy Holroyd's "Magic Touch", but would like to see a lot more. I did some video in LA of Carl and a few others, giving attention to the feet movements, details, etc. if anything, just to learn stuff. Of the women I saw there, they were excellent at footwork and had lots of grace. Seeing them dance was a major highlight for me. Big thumbs up to the ladies for adding such class to the moves. Does anyone have video clips of northern soul dancing to share? Ladies or anyone with good moves? KTF Jas PS. For anyone on this forum whose seen Andy's "The Magic Touch" video "how about that slow motion clip of the woman with straight long hair doing a spin in the spotlight all by herself...Wow! Almost poetic isn't it? If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about.
  11. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! I LOVE IT! I WILL FIND IT. THEN IT WILL BE MINE. IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. KTF JAS
  12. C'mon surely someone out there can add to the list! KTF Jas
  13. I rather enjoyed that one actually. What is it? (besides crap in your opinion) Absolutely no business in a northern soul context though. KTF Jas

This is my all-time #1 favorite by Wilson Pickett. Not northern-just superb soul music. RIP. KTF Jas
  15. I was thinking... I have got at least a CD's worth of these extremely questionable boderline northern soul sounds in my collection. Things that might have killer northern style arrangements with dreadful vocals, hybrid sounding stuff with only a hint of the right beat, etc. I'm planning on dedicating my next CD comp to these oddball sounds. I'm calling it "The Northern Soul Netherworld". I just read in the "unknowns" post about a few such songs like the country sounding thing and some girl group stuff or whatever...Obviously, I'm not the only one hanging on to stuff like this. Let's discuss a few of these extremely questionable numbers that for which we have a soft spot but wouldn't dare attempt to play out anywhere. But in our record rooms and our twisted minds, these songs might fly with us, even though better judgement tells us most people would never buy it. Also, let's discuss those odd sounds that have made their way in like Dolly Parton or Al Martino. I'll start it off: 1. Doin' the Arthur-The Four Directions-Coral 2. Pochahantas-Camelots-Ember 3. Eyes-Earls 4. Bubblegummer-Teardrops-Saxony 5. Line and Track-Aquamen-Hirich/Hiback 6. Sweet Hunk of Misery-Sue Thompson 7. Something Special On Your Mind-Wild Cherry-WCII I've pretty much just started compiling my CD right here. I'm not organizing another swap because I got hosed on here before-sent 20 CDs out and got 7 in return. If people want to swap they can just contact me and I'll just swap one on one. This could be a really fun and/or nauseating CD swap or at least an entertaining thread. KTF Jason

Didn't read the description. I should have before I pointed the finger, but I can definitely verify that the Vanguards is a boot. I have a guaranteed original of that record and it actually goes for a bit of money. It's an in-demand record for soul harmony collectors. Thanks for clearing up the Al MCarther thing though. I just can't imagine anyone wanting to pay that much money for a bootleg. KTF Jas

I'm looking for a nice high quality scan of Rosie and the Originals on Wax World. I'm also looking for label scans of her other stuff not soul related or even publicity photos. Maybe a UK "Angel Baby" or something. Any help would be appreciated. You can e-mail me at: jazzyjas@bellsouth.net By the way, I've been to her web site and there are loads of things on there but I'm looking for better quality images. It's for a project that I'm working on. Thanks in advance. KTF Jas PS. A nice high quality MP3 of the Wax World would also be appreciated.
  20. Hank Levine's "Image" is also on ABC PARAMOUNT in the US. There is a part 1 and a part 2. Most of the S copies are mis-labeled. I have one with the labels correct but it's not in the best shape. Massive on the popcorn scene. Theo Doumoulin from Belgium used it every week for his radio show theme music. KTF Jas
  21. I just recently passed up the Garnett Mimms LP on Arista and now I'm wondering if I should go back and get it. I'd like to hear some comments about this album to see if it's worth checking out and buying. I'm sure someone on here owns a copy. KTF Jas

That song by Adonis that you were trying to figure out several posts ago is "Cry of the Century" if I'm not mistaken. Big Belgian sound. I also think the Paul Sindab on Powertree is brilliant. The only record I own by him is "You Dropped Your Candy in the Sand". Found that years ago in my first week of college for 50 cents at a flea market. Has anyone ever seen that nice EP of him with the picture cover? JM had one a while ago. What a cool item. Was "I Was a Fool" on that EP? Would that be the Cardinal label record that's being discussed? KTF Jas
  23. Lee Wesley Jones - The Masqueraders KTF Jas
  24. Hi folks, Hope you had a nice holiday. Just posted a bunch of ebay auctions and set sales today. Lots of these items have been listing previously, but I reduced a lot of prices, so have a look. https://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ2...majorwaxbuildup I also plan to post more items throughout the night. Thanks for looking, Jason
  25. On the subject of backing tracks, where is "In the Pocket" by Detroit Strings(?) available? Absolute killer instrumental version of "Our Love is in the Pocket". I'd love to get that and the instrumental of Honey & the bees "Never in a Million Years". Clear versions. I've got already got low-fi web files. Would love some info. KTF Jas ps. I MUST have the "fast" alternate version of Too Many People by Bobby Goldsboro, too.
