Sounds From The Shelter Vol. 7 - Beat Ballads And Slowies
New podcast for July: "Beat Ballads and Slowies" Among all the different genres the Northern Soul scene has on offer, my favourite one is Beat Ballads. Big productions, full orchestra with the kitchen sink thrown in, heart-wrenching lyrics, great voices, the lot. This podcasts incorporates the whole spectrum of beat ballads: Big fully blown productions like Roy Hamilton, Jimmy Beaumont or Little Anthony, bordering midtempo dancers like Patty LaBelle or Wade Flemons, blue-eyed stuff like Peggy March or Dick Hafner, wrist slashers like Big Maybelle and what have you. 24 tracks, as usual all recorded from original vinyl only. Rocky Roberts . If he could . Durium (Argentina) Arthur Prysock . Before you break my heart . Verve George Smith . I've had it . Turntable The Trends . Not too old to cry . ABC Deena Johnson . The breaking point . Wild Deuce The Epsilons . I'm so devoted . Shrine Big Maybelle . Oh lord, what are you doing to me . Scepter Patty LaBelle . You forgot how to love . Atlantic Joe Tex . Next time she's mine . Michelle Dobie Gray . No room to cry . Charger Kenny Carter . I've gotta find her . RCA (Germany) Tommy Tate . I'm taking on pain . Okeh Peggy March . Losin' my touch . RCA The Love Potion . This love . TCB Jackie Taylor . Walkin' back . Jubilee Walter Jackson . My ship is comin' in . Okeh Dick Hafner . Go 'way tears . Valiant Dee Dee Warwick . I can't go back . Hurd Jimmy Beaumont . You got too much going for you . London (UK) Roy Hamilton . The panic is on . MGM Wade Flemons . That other place . VJ J.J. Jackson . It seems like I've been here before . Great Intro's
Carl Henderson "that girl" on Renfro has a great intro if i remember correctly. Unfortunately it's just the intro that is great.

John Speaker - I Can't Break The News - Vogue
Don't know which record you're talking about but 'cant break the news' sure doesn't turn up regularly, especially for that price.

Are All Ebay Highest Bids Legit Or Phoney?
I don't think real high bids are not legit or phoney. Maybe sometimes buyer chickens out because he struggles to actually raise the cash. But what about low-priced items, say up to $50? I somehow have a feeling that phoney or fake bids just to raise final end price are more likely in this price range? Especially UK/Euro sellers.

The United Four - Baby Don't Do It
Which version is it? And is it really the United Four? Thought this was just the cover up name?

I Wish Bootleggers Would F*ck Off
I'm not aware of such a policy and I don't think there's need for one. I only recall the odd one-off carver in the sales section and hardly any of those nasty new pressings. Of course old i.e. 70s/80s pressings are sold on SS and I don't have a problem with that. It's rather a case of venues and ebay where selling new boots and carvers should be banned.

Are All Ebay Highest Bids Legit Or Phoney?
What you describe is part of the "game theory".believe it or not, it's proven.

Funky Soul
So, are you saying anyone who dislikes these funky stuff refuses to accept new sounds?
-
Funky Soul
John, sorry but completely unnecessary post. You say everybody who dislikes funk or very funky soul is a member of the 60s only pop soul brigade? sweeping statement, just plain bullshit and an insult to many (including me).

Big Beat Ballads
Don't think it was mentioned before. agree with you, great tune. mine's a nice Verve demo. Apparently a big belgian popcorn oldie. Here are a few more not mentioned so far. Some of them pretty poppy/blue eyed but great nonetheless Dick Hafner - Go 'way tears Peggy March - Losin' my touch Maxine Brown's version of Peggy March. Quite different. Don't know if this ever made it on vinyl. Have it on CD only. Dee Dee Warwick - I can't go back

Funky Soul
Great minds think alike Pete. I thought it filled the floor of the oldies room when it was played in the rare/underplayed room. Seriously, as said before funky edge tune have been played for well over a decade but in recent years that stuff gained momentum. DJ's tried to find more and more new sounds that fit in. My opinion is that they clearly went too far.

Funky Soul
Don't take it personal but this is exactly what I had in mind when I said all that funky stuff is sh*te. This got nothing to do with Northern or Rare Soul.

Funky Soul
Tell you what. I agree. What a tune. Although I don't see it as dancefloor material. NB: And not funk or even funky IMO. Just so soulful it hurts

Big Beat Ballads
Chalky/Gerd, thanks for posting some truly awesome beat ballads. Ray Pollard is deep soul in my books, but a gem nonetheless. Jimmy Radcliffe - My ship best version by far. Gave my copy to the missus and regret it right now . Little Ann is a gem. First heard it on a tape a mate recorded from the Great Yarmouth weekender radio shows back in 1990/1991 and immediately fell in love with it. Tho have to say it's really at the very slow end of what I consider a beat ballad. Here's another one for you, Rocky Roberts - If he could. Might be a tad too fast for a beat ballad but it's such a full production in your face sort of sound it surely fits in this thread. It's from a western movie "Tom Dollar". The only releases I know are a french EP and an argentinian 33 rpm 7"

Funky Soul
Russ, that's just black/white thinking. It seems that to you it's either up the funky soul road or down the crap-substandard-NS road? Is there anything in between for you? I'm pretty open minded, always rather listening to newies/lesser known stuff than oldies. my ideal world of NS incorporates many different styles in black music. But funk isn't one of them. Period. In the beginning 'new wave of funky soul' was quite refreshing and was really what it said on the tin, funky soul. John Harris, stuff like that. And the records were really good! But it seems that as dj's were struggling to find new stuff they went more and more down the funk road and ended up in funk country, no soul. And that's the stuff I think is sh*te. Another period. Maybe you and everbody else who's championing funky soul should challenge yourself: Is it really still danceable soul music or is it funk?

Are Dj Bookings/spots Incestuous?
Paul, both times I guested at TOS nobody was abusive to me but folks were grabbing my beer. I'd rather had a a "f*ck you" than being thirsty.
