You're spot on that Willie Wright recorded the tune before the release of Curtis's 'Back To The World' album. The Hotel recordings I believe were recorded/released in 1971 'Lack Of Education' and 1977 'Telling The Truth'. As you rightly say, it's a C. Mayfield penned tune and is featured on the 'Lack Of Education' album predating 'Back To The World' by 2 years. It would be more accurate of me to say that it's the best ever cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'Right On For The Darkness' which is featured on the 'Back To The World' album. But I have no idea when the Hotel 45 of 'Right On For The Darkness' was released /recorded and, though I've heard the 45 version, I don't know if the album cut is the same version? Anyway up, it's a tremendous and truly rare gem - interestingly only books at £150!! BTW It is entirely plausible, and interesting theory, that Curtis had Willie in mind or even wrote it for him. I've included an image from the only recorded popsike sale, which shows the details and marks you describe. Regards, Greg.

I dunno Paul, for me the Willie Wright "Right On for The Darkness" on Hotel has got enough soulful intent to just 'crossover'. As you say, traditionally a ghetto funk tune of quality and a cover that more than does justice to the original Curtis Mayfield 'Back To The World' album cut. ATB Greg.

Agree Mal, has a touch of the Sage about it. Also sounds like what it is, a small production that reflects on the tentative nature of the vocal, but it has some really smooth quality and a nice rhythmn. Interesting tune. Best, Greg

The rarest version of this by a long way is the Elf issue with 'Knowing I Love You' on the flip . The demo with the long and short mix is the most easily available. Sorry Phil! As for price, the demo should command £20 - £25 and the demo long/short about £15 - but if it takes off the issue could become a £50 tune? Regards, Greg.

Great tune that a few people are starting to pick up on.. Put a copy of the Elf demo and the Elf issue up for sale a while ago, with soundclips, and didn't get any interest, which surprised me alot - especially at well under a score each! As mentioned above, rarity over quality rearing its head I guess. A note on rarity - the issue with the very good 'Knowing I Love You' is far tuffer than the demo (at about 1:50) so get your skates on. Glad to hear you're going to give it some air!! Regards, Greg.

It's a great take on a great record.. Not surprised the price is up at the moment as it fits with the in vogue funky soul sound. JM's auctioning a white demo, which might spike interest a bit more as well. However, 100 notes for the red issue seems a bit steep.
