45s On Ebay - Now With Mp3-mix - Sonny Munro Issue!, Ballads
any chance of a full MP3 of the Hopeton Lewis before you post it off? went a bit high for me - couldn't really justify spending that at the moment on a rocksteady 45...

The Work Song - Info Required If You Can
re: instrumental versions - Work Song *was* an jazz instrumental by the Adderleys. It was Oscar Brown Jr who added lyrics. same thing happened with lots of jazz stuff, e.g. 'Comin' Home Baby'

Dean Barlow...third Window From The Right?
the Larry Trider's alright, but listening to the Dean Barlow is a painful experience, made worse by the feeling that there's a reasonable song under there ruined by the singing and arrangement...

Few Priced R&bish Wants
Greg Belson had a Jame T Horn for sale a few months back, not sure if it sold... took me ages to get a Johnny Watson - no one ever seems to sell it (with good reason!)

For Sale ,serious Offers Invited
Crystal was a label in the President group (Jay Boy, etc). bought mine for 8 quid i think from the President warehouse stock a few years ago, but wish i'd bought a few more copies now, same for loads of titles! ah well... don't think i've ever played the other side though, only Chocolate Sugar - a heavy hammond funk track... looking forwards to digging it out and giving the other side a spin now...

Year Of Release Not Stated
sort of - the copyright year on some labels under the logo is the year of the logo AFAIK, e.g. Cameo, Jewel, One-Der-Ful, etc,

Hot Box Deejaying
'hot box' deejaying was talked about a while back on the funk board in this thread i think: https://domain745625.sites.fasthosts.com/mo...box&start=0 a few pages in. basically it's the idea that you only own a single box of records and operate a one-in/one-out policy to keep only the best records... no idea what the thread means tho!

Popcorn
well 'Rhythm and Blues' was coined so that the separate charts (which already existed) could be called something other than 'Race music' which was starting to sound rather offensive...

Has The Northern Soul Bubble Burst?
i think that's James' point... speaking as a relatively 'young' person (30 this year!), i don't want to drive to some banqueting suite or rugby club in the middle of nowhere in order to go out - i want to go to a more 'normal' city centre venue on foot or by public transport. that's why 60s, mod or soul events such as Shooting High, Crossfire, Mousetrap, Pow Wow, London Bridge All Nighter, etc (and i presume Oslo Soul, Boiler Club, etc in Europe) and hopefully James' Soul Revolution can and will attract younger crowds.

Possibly The Best Compilation Ever
Proper do a great 4CD compilation of Western Swing and a second volume has just come out although i haven't heard it yet. Western swing being the now virtually forgotten half of Country and Western. 100 tracks, thick booklet, some killer stuff there, all 1920-1940 ish. some other good R&B 3 or 4 CD boxsets around at the moment, there's two companies doing them by year 'hits of 1954' etc, for six quid in Fopp you can't go wrong, sound quality is good. there's also one of all female stuff called something like 'I'm a Bad Bad Girl' which has some killer early stuff on. only bad thing about listening to this kind of stuff is wanting a track and finding out it's on 78 only...

Boots, Re Issues Or Promo's Whats The Difference
i think the point he was trying to make was that no royalties are paid on promo copies, and technically they remain the property of the record company (although whether that could actually be enforced in law is another matter). i understand artists often unwittingly have to pay for promotional materials (i.e. it's taken out of their potential earnings), and that included the white label promo copies...

ebay is full of the re-issue shite
shame, is a nice site, only bought one 45 from there though, wish more people had signed up. Ebay is a terrible site usability wise, only popular because it achieved a critical mass of users first (and from memory stuff like QXL around at the time in the mid 90s were even worse) - they made bad design decisions at the start, and it's too late for them to change. just really basic stuff like having separate fields for artist/author, date, title, label/publisher, for records and books (for example, and i'm other items have similar standard fields) would make searching a hundred times easier. they sorted the searching out a bit a year or two ago by syncing the categories between the different sites internationally, but the fact that they even had that problem to begin with makes me doubt their competence...

Just A Few Little Wants
Hercules is pretty hard, sure i saw one for sale recently - either Ebay or the fryer-mantis funk board...

Is There Any Point Doing 'general' Soul Lists?
i think the lack of other decent soul forums means there are a lot of people of fans of non-Northern stuff here, reading even if not posting much. recognise quite a few names from the modculture board for starters... i would definitely like to see more sales lists of R&B, vocal groups and other early stuff...

Warren's Wants No 832
is there a way to tell the Tommy Andre 45s apart? i presume that they will have different matrix numbers... and what does the Hold Back The Tears one go for?

Unfortunate Label Misprints
ah must have missed that, saw a couple of threads on the subject and it wasn't mentioned, thought you'd know it though, of course.
-
Unfortunate Label Misprints
was a thread a while back about JA covers of soul, the flip of this never got mentioned - a great version of The Manhattans 'I'm the One that Love Forgot'... ...there's one 45 on Rio i think, and probably more, where you can clearly hear the sound of the needle dropping before the track starts!

Anybody Know This
