Jamaica 50Th Independance
Impossible to pick one fave track from any genre [imagine any half hip soul boy trying to pick 8 for 'desert island discs'] but in the interest of team spirit these are the 45's of Jamaican origin piled by the downstairs record player in our house this week: BIG WILLIE 'COLLEGE ROCK' [iRON SIDE] TECHNIQUES 'BORN TO LOVE YOU' [bLANK] LARRY MARSHALL 'I'VE GOT TO MAKE IT' [sTUDIO ONE] [ ANTHONY ELLIS 'I AM THE RULER' [sTUDIO ONE] BIG YOUTH + JUNIOR BYLES 'SUGAR SUGAR' [TANASHA] TONY BRAVETT 'I'M SO ASHAMED' [bULLET UK] DENNIS WALKS 'DRIFTER' [MOODISC] TECHNIQUES 'IT'S YOU I LOVE' [DUKE REID] Makes a change from listening to soul records...though few records are as soulful as the Tony Bravett. cheers dean

Funky Soul
The original funk scene in the late 80's/early 90's died due to a lack of trousers.....the popular clubs in london, manchester, bristol [sort of], swansea, plymouth were seperate entities. The DJ's knew each other but the customers remained purely local: there was never a 'scene' as such. No trousers. Having said that I still had a weekly saturday in manchester for several years after that period so it took a while to fizzle out.

The eddie floyd is a poor soul record and a worse funk record. Trust me, I am without an axe.

Funky Soul
Just a thought...the uk rare soul scene has been moving the goal posts from the classic h-d-h stomper sound in order to stay fresh since...1972? New releases, rare motown, latin, beat ballads..the funk tinged thing, which I like to call 'dave music' is just the latest tweek to the rare soul shopping list. Each of these alterations have caused massive controversy at the time but eventually, once the fat is trimmed from the lean, all these styles have been consumed by the big beast of northern. I grew up listening to soul and dancing to soul and funk, while later on, twenty odd years ago, I was involved with the rare funk thing which interestingly included soulful funk records [known as 'wailing woman' in manchester; marketed as 'sister funk' later in london] which is of course the other way round to this debate. I have heard a lot of this newly played stuff recently and feel a lot of the tunes aren't good soul,[sort of indie Tempts lp tracks], or funk, [no bass in your face]. Some are good soul records though. In fact real funk with them holes in the track doesn't sit easily with trad dad northern style dancing. BUT the public will decide, the good ones will be absorbed in to the northern soul cannon, and in five years time everyone will be wondering what the fuss was about. dean

I Wish Bootleggers Would F*ck Off
I HAVE SOME BOOTLEGS: salvadors, mel britt, tommy navaroe, etc. from my youth having not gone to wigan as a child and didn't know any better. .As a former record dealer [for 18 years] I refused to stock them, probably cost me a lot of money.but you have to have so moral backbone to go to bed at night. Socialism: it'll never catch on post thatcher

My Interview For Blues & Soul Mag. By Dj Snowboy (Uk)
Never knew that there was a rare [presumably] funk scene in Russia...or for that matter Detroit. There might be life in my old cover-ups yet! dean

The Right To Reply
Two things: As every one has a different relationship with the soul scene, age, knowledge, preference of style etc. then one persons 'played out oldie' is another persons 'my lawdy what is that!!!????' I believe a good DJ, from any part of the soul scene, wants to play something original and will use the tried and tested to in a sense 'set up' the tune they have been scheming to drop. The percentage or frequency of 'new' stuff depends on the audiance. In a functioning dancefloor, to get away with four or more relativly unkown pieces whilst holding the dancers makes for a very succesful set. Of course if your playing to fifteen people in the back room of an undertakers you can play what you want. dean

Just How Big Is The Modern Scene?
The phrase 'modern soul' was first used within the northern soul community to mean 'not traditional northern soul' Of course with 70's being played, if it had the right beat, since, well, the 70's, the whole thing is a bit blurred. Crossover was at birth in the 80's actually 60/70 records previously underplayed that apealed to a modern audiance rather than the northern off shoot it has become. Some people like soulful house: other hate it. There are large numbers of people who enjoy soulful music to who the term 'modern soul' would be completly meaningless. Myself I like all eras and styles of soul music though tend towards the midtempo what with me dodgy knees and all. dean

Del Rays Destination Unknown
Well I've dug it out [not a great filing clerk] and the matrix, to my failing eyes, seems to be scratched so not a real one. Still 65p for a ballad I'll only play at home [though I did play it on the radio covering for RS during a spurs cup run back in the late 80's/early '90's and a few weeks later it came out on a goldmine cd-funny that] so I can't complain too muchly. thanks again team dean

Del Rays Destination Unknown
Thanks chaps: i'll have to dig it out and expose it to direct sunlight [breifly] to check the shade of green. Non soul types really wouldn't get it would they? dean

Del Rays Destination Unknown
As Mr. Plumb rightly comments the deep ballad on the flip is a killer, and the reason I kept it out of a job lot, from a dealer who had pulled all the northern [!] out of a big collection and moved the deep stuff on to me. One of the half dozen bits I kept. Probably worked out at 65p. Nice. dean

British Record Shop Archive
Expansion Records in Manchester, 12 years as a shop, first on Corperation Street then Swan Street, then six years as a mail order [from my basement a former pub beer cellar] and gig stall thang. Owned by John Anderson and Richard Searling, then just John, then just me. I think we sold soul records. Derick Pearson Crown Prince of Bradford has some pictures I think. cheers dean
