I have the Harlem Johns lp.....the cover versions are uptempo and are not the usual stax Motown covers . They played at the pre allnighter soul nights at Wigan Casino regularly and are pictured onstage there next to the piano so I know where my money is going.I am sure the north got checked out on a Tamla lp the one with the tracks that segue into each other.Here is a letter from Randy Cozens looking back at the london pre northern scene.I do have an article about Gary Wilding somewhere about a venue in Blackpool which is not The Mecca and the fact that people there are paying above the odds for old soul records,It is from 68.

I have this it is from the R&B scene mag from 64/65 but It was really describing a live band scene....Harlem Johns Reshuffle were using it to describe the records that we recognise as the Northern Soul Scene. They were covering Looking For A fox(Clarence Carter)/My Elusive Dreams (Moses and Joshua Dillard)/Open The Door To Your Heart (Darrell Banks)/ You Are The One I Love (Adams Apples).Let Love Come Between Us (James And Bobby ), Come Back Girl (Jackie Edwards)/Down In The Valley etc.....

Harlem Johns Reshuffle were a northern soul covers band managed by an agency In Wigan.The band were from Oldham and as you can see in 69 they were advertised as northern soul.They played covers of Looking For A Fox/Open The Door etc etc. They alsio played Wigan Casino.....the term had been used before by St Louis Union but I think this group were the catalyst for the term.Can anyone pin point Dave Godin using it?

From Gene Townsel Thank you for your kind words. I did license a vinyl 45 to crazy beat records. Anything else out there is a bootleg. It's amazing how flagrantly the music is being bootlegged on the internet. I have yet to find any legal help to get paid. I still have both the analog and digital masters and I plan to re-release the music as a part of a project

Pye also did dbl sides acetates. Etta James I Prefer You/Mike Stevens Go Go Train. The earlier Pye acetates were on a different label.Chuck Jackson-I Need You single sided Blue chips-Tell Her/Good Lovin. It is easy to have another cut stuck on to a single sided acetate but they tend to stick out like a sore themb and tend to be in demand/unreleased tracks.There is a fraudster that is flooding e bay with them but they are the top rarities

Pye single sided ones.These are from 66 onwards and the odd unreleased track.

Just dug my Pye and Carlin ones out.In the UK they did single sided and dbl sided acetates with diff artists.The two single sided ones are Sandy and Everyday Sunshine Two unreleased tracks.There is always an off centre ring in the spindle hole.The next one is more relevant Sisters Of Love Mr Fix It Man backed with Union Express Sugar Honey.....i will go on to the Pye ones. The Carlin one with the 4 Tops release and the Gladys release was probably legit as they were both released in 72 on UK Tamla.

I have an acetate the same. They are sixties acetates.Mine has Go Go Train by the Shevelles backed with an Etta James track.Same as released versions.

Bootleg-Unofficial release without legal permission.Usually live gigs by big bands.Led Zepp/The Who/Dylan etc sometimes sourced from soundboards.People call pressings bootlegs. Pressing/Counterfeit-Created to deceive.They have no indications that these were pressed unofficially and it is only the matrix marks/wrong colours/fictitious labels that give it away.Historically once a record was pressed it was dropped from playlists.They have had a new lease of life in revivalist gigs.Sometimes there were so few originals that they were repressed to satisfy demand.Some pressings were not created for the northern scene at all and created to cover the demand on popcorn scenes or local US oldies scenes. O.V.O-This has come into play once the newie/dropped once pressed element went. Reissue-Legally repressed by the record company sometimes US reissues have very small indications or none at all.ie Gold Brunswicks/Line And Track.Some have very obvious signs Oldies Unlimited. Tailor Made-A record created with the northern soul market in mind.
