A Reluctance To Move On?
gotta agree with you chalks, and at the same time im not being derogatory to the original poster, but to a large extent what you refer to as underplays depends on how long you have been on the scene eg: GARNETT MIMMS.....i aqquired a copy 3 or 4 years ago but with the knowledge it was an oldie TO ME ... yes, its great to hear it played, cant argue with that...these type of "forgotten sounds" deserve their place. i find it highly frustrating as well that when and i say WHEN im offered the opportunity to dj i play something like that, no-one wants to know.....and its not because the big guns aren't playing it either....so i sell on....what happens next?....someone else gets hold of it and its pronounced as "getting big plays".....SO, ITS NOT GOOD ENOUGH WHEN I PLAY IT THEN??....soes that smack of hypocracy or not?. do you want another example of a "tune"....BARBARA BANKS - "RIVER OF TEARS" played at wigan and before, not expensive but not a cheapie either. somebody must have earwigged to neil jones about it at prestwich and neil is quick to pick up on things like this and i heard he was raving about it....BUT NOBODY MENTIONS IT WAS ME WHO WAS PLAYING IT...i can do that with a whole bunch of things BUT NOBODY HAS THE GOOD GRACE TO OFFER ME A SPOT ANYWHERE.....so im left kicking my heels. thats another story though isnt it?. anyway as chalky rightly says main rooms simply wont conform in such a progressive manner, and afterall, new people who are just coming onto the scene want to experience everything we were into first...to lay down roots so to speak....isnt that how we first did it?, then, eventually they will wander into the side rooms to see and hear what all the fuss is about. KINGS HALL, both rooms work really well and that, is the predominate factor, the very reason why we have these rooms to hear something different and believe it or not, some of these rooms get a great atmosphere, much in the same way as the main rooms. rob.h

Records With Train In Title
easy one that dave, on columbia and the most you could pay thats a ridiculous amount, is a tenner!...got a copy recently off ray peters for $4...he has loads of cheap things (speedlimit45rpm.com).best thing is, this is a wigan play from the early years when instrumentals were popular,...probably played by john vincent ("king of the instro's"). as for all train titles...well you're more knowledgeable than me but i'll go with your judgement!.

sorry if my post was misunderstood but thats what i was referring to mick, and you can see the resemblance i want my baby back and job opening as both are similarly structured.......and hi dave, alls well here, hope you're fine......can anyone remember the levine tracks cut on pye records in 76...i remember colin giving me some tomorrow demo's of tyrone's and carol woods, evelyn thomas, doris jones etc and they're probably quite unusual to come across now......just thinkin, wasnt one of tyrone's releases called "running in and out of my life"? rob.h

havin a listen today to dave.l. brown's "northern side of philly soul cd. i noticed that the tyrone ashley track, " i want my baby back" has a striking resemblance to the del-larks, "job opening" in its arrangement. it was recorded slightly after job and surprise, surprise tyrone ashley is the lead vocalist but under his real name, sammy campbell. he also, just so happened to have cut solo on the same label, queen city and, although i forget the title, ive seen THAT for sale on here and on jm's auction. tyrone also worked for levine in the mid-70's around the same time as lj johnson and evelyn thomas and recorded for pye in this country. did he ever come over here then or since and thus, is he still alive?. i'd wager he would be a good draw with his repetoire at prestatyn etc. im probably barkin' so if he's hovis forget the thread but he'd certainly got the voice. rob.h

ISNT IT IRONIC?......THE PROGRAMS WITH THE BEST RATINGS GET THE CHOP....BECAUSE IT DOES SOMETHING OTHER DULL, BLAND PROGRAMS DONT DO BY ATTRACTING LISTENERS FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE, IT MAKES THEM FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE THAT "RETRO IS COOL",....IN OTHER WORDS ITS APPEAL PUTS POP PAP IN THE SHADE AND MAKES IT LOOK TOTALLY FALSE AND INEDIBLE, SOMETHING THEY JUST HATE TO ADMIT. SORRY IF IM PUTTING THIS IN BOLD, ITS MY METHOD OF TRANSMITTING TO EVERYBODY HOW MUCH IT MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL......HOW ABOUT WE ALL REFUSE TO PAY OUR LICENSE FEES AND PUT THESE ARROGANT BARSTEWARDS OUT OF BUSINESS? rich, did couple of years ago off henry atkinson. cant understand why more people dont buy tunes off this man...he really IS the best for quality tunes at SENSIBLE PRICES. by the way, levine was responsible for interest in this when he started playing it on his return to the scene in 2000. cant knock that man either....the scene owes him bigtime. rob.h

nail on the head mate, a bloody disgrace, and they expect us to put up listening to so much unadulterated shit 24/7. the problem with music today and for the last 21/2 decades, its totally lost any semblence of normality, generations of youths brainwashed by junk churned out by brainless, drug riddled tosspots who've got no roots. its about time someone got a grip on reality. for cryin out loud, we lost richard's show last year....do we not have a right to hear our music on the airwaves then?. discrimination by the establishment again! rob.h

thats a shame...you'll probably recall as well, that they put out a triple cd set of llorraine ellison's recordings but, i felt at the time it was just too pricey, but you could say the same about hip-oselect...the only thing, and most important thing is, these items are limited edition and highly collectable....as vol.6 of motown 1966 which, has sold for £400+ on ebaY proved. in time, the ellison collection will be extremely valuable...i wouldnt be at all surprised if its deleted already.....guess the loma project will be viewed the same way as cameo-parkway...an enterprise that proves a bridge too far for the owners of these catalogues...that strikes an all too familiar chord...dosnt it?. THESE PEOPLE WILL GO TO THEIR GRAVES AND STILL DENY US THE RIGHT TO HEAR THE MATERIAL WE YEARN FOR. rob.h

TOTALLY UNREAL...ISNT IT?! ROB.H- Linda Jones
stand corrected mike, think it was also on the series of loma reissues that was instigated by dave godin in the 70's...... can you imagine her singing "you hit me" though....WOW!! if it were real, it would be in the northern soul all-time top 5 ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER!! rob.h- Linda Jones
always pondered this one....how many versions of "you hit me ( right where it hurt me )". bearing in mind it has the hallmark of george kerr, could it be possible that the late, great linda jones cut an unissued version?. my reasoning is along the same lines as "last minute miracle", which forwhatever reason, no-one was aware of until recent years and is every bit as good as the shirelles.....any anoraks out there studying at the university of loma? rob.h love alice clark but kim weston's is a stormer!- Joe Tex Biggie
