John Manship Auction Results 12-3-2014
First of all I just thought when I read JM's description that it sounded like he was making a big deal out of the "love that never grows old" side. He doesn't have a clue what is popular on the rare nighter scene, except what he gets off Sam. I know that from speaking to him and by the stuff he puts up on the auction. I've rung him loads of times in the past to tell him that the flip side of one of his auction records is actually the side that people are chasing. knowing about the artist, writers, producers etc etc. isn't the same as knowing a great record when you hear one. The other thing is, I have nothing what so ever to do with Tim Browns auction except that he is a friend of mine and I post his list up for him as a personal favour. I have no financial arrangement or axes to grind, just my personal opinion.

Hear, hear. Just been reading Mr Manships latest offerings. My God, he's so far out of what's been going on on the nighter scene since Cleethorpes pier it's laughable. Read his sales patter for the Jackie Beavers. He's just discovered the best side, after it's been a monster play for 30 years.

Blimey, Gallahads poor record to my ears and didn't think it was that rare either.

With a record like that 15 seems a lot until they disappear into collections.

I agree, he's definitely still selling that stuff. I was at his place not long after he got that stash, and there were mint copies of rarities all over the place, and that was just in the office.

Dee Clarke Acetate, 'don't Use Me'
Thank you Kirsty. Interesting. Very sparse production. Somebody obviously liked it very much.

Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most
Wow! I can appreciate that he's not the greatest singer in the world, but the record has the storming Detroit backing track and the classic pause for the hand claps. This 45 has the impossible to describe "IT" factor that makes it a dance floor tour de force for me.

PM'd you Andy.

Lyrics To George Freeman - Down And Out
Should have posted this up in the "songs that tear at your heart strings" post. This really is a tour de force and one of my all time faves. Absolute class.

It's a really nice record, but very hard to sell. People pay big money for dance floor fillers. That's a fact.

The greatest finds are the ones where you've spent all day looking through 45s and found virtually nothing, then in the very last handful! Bam! A great record.. you can't beat that feeling. But there is only one truly great find, that was DOBARD'S load in Oakland 2005, that was far & beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Beating any of my previous finds a 10,000 fold or more. At the time those involved in the purchase were all numb, as it was totally unbelievable. Unfortunately as nothing will ever get close to that in the future, it has dulled my excitement of looking & finding records somewhat. But I have an appointment for another load to look at shortly of 100,000+. With no-one having been through them in many years, I'm already getting a little excited.. strange what vinyl can induce on the senses when there's a chance of finding something. See post 16. Bloody loads turned up in the big find. Can't agree with G4. May be rare, but not good to my ears.

It used to be rare until the big find. Can't remember how many copies he's auctioned since then. Wonder how many more he's still got?

I can't decide whether you should be congratulated, or pitied for that post.

This R&b Thing ?
Mutton Jeff................DEAF!!!!

This R&b Thing ?
R&B is just another label we have given to certain tunes. Like every other genre of this music, we will never agree on what constitutes a good or bad tune. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. It just seems that most of you are a bit mutton jeff.

I agree with Pete and Bearsy. Life is too short to listen to self indulgent, over long pod casts which offer nothing for people who are into "Northern" I have no axe to grind with any of the posters. But I find it one of life's bitter ironies that people who were once at the vanguard of our movement, are so desperate to reclaim past glories that they happily proclaim "brilliant new discoveries" about 45's they wouldn't have given house room to back in the day. I'm as desperate as the next man/woman to hear something new. But not that desperate. The Dj's from the States have no concept of what makes a "northern" tune, so I always give their plays a wide birth anyway.

Anglo American Latest Auction
MARCH RARE SOUL AUCTION FINISHES 2.00pm FRIDAY 28th MARCH 2014 (28th Mar — Serf’s Emancipation Day in Tibet) Highest bidder at that point wins the disc. No extensions, no games. End of. Thanks. To view the items below go to www.raresoulvinyl.co.uk and click on Auctions..... Min Bid: MAR - A Joy Lovejoy In Orbit Checker 1188 D VG++ 200 Yes, you read it correctly — a promo. Sadly it doesn’t exist on a “white” a la ‘Landslide’, Valentino’s etc but nonetheless seriously rare. Took me 20 years to even see a copy MAR - B Mar-J’s Got To Find A Way Out Magic Touch 2008 VG++ 200 Storming group dancer from the Milwaukee label, probably recorded in Chicago. Would have graded this one mint minus but for one tiny mark MAR - C Irma Routen I Will Sacrifice MGM 14031 D VG++ 250 It seems that things are still to be found in and around major labels backing the claim that this one was around years ago (quite logically). One of Ian Levine’s current big raves MAR - D Willie Hutch Love Runs Out Dunhill 4012 D M- 500 I used to be of the opinion that the vinyl promos of this classic double-sider were rare boots (for sure the issue is only styrene) but I recently met an American collector who owned a copy of this almost perfect promo since ’69. So I was wrong (I trust him implicitly) and the “fact” will be omitted from our forthcoming bootleg guide MAR - E Pinch Of Perfection Loving Alone G & W 1001 M- 350 A group that is aptly named for this great Philly-styled 1976 dancer out of Richmond, Virginia. Hardly ever listed on the dreaded eBay and not at all in mint as far as I can see MAR - F Herb Johnson I’m So Glad Toxsan 101 VG+ 200 So scarce on the first local label before Brunswick with all the trademarks that made it such a biggie at the Torch. Not great condition but you’ll wait a long, long time before you see another. Check the sound bite MAR - G Eldridge Holmes Let’s Go Steady Kansu 100 M- 250 Let me tell you a little story. I’ve collected this guy’s records since 1975 and until 8 years ago did not even know this 45 existed. Two only on eBay since 2008 and have gone for bargain prices. This is rare. And great! Again — check the sound bite MAR - H Jimmy Andrews Big City Playboy Blue Jay 5003 M- 2000 Amongst the elite of rare soul collectables and one of the finest discoveries of the last 20 years or so; a rare chance to obtain this superb item MAR - I Stormie Wynters Life Saver Mercury M- 850 One of the rarest major label releases, known to me since the mid ‘80’s this is only the second copy we’ve ever had. Lovely condition too MAR - J Bob & Gene I Really Really Love You Mo-Do 104 M- 400 Now here’s a real rarity — a Tim Brown mistake. Listed in our current price guide at far less than our minimum offer. It happens, but the fact remains that this ‘Ton of Dynamite’ styled mover is both rare and just right for now
