John Manship Auction Results 5-2-2014
Blimey, he won't be having buns for tea tonight. Groovettes has plummeted in price since those heady days when some numpty paid £1500 for a copy. Eh Rod?

To view the items below go to www.raresoulvinyl.co.uk and click on Auctions Min Bid FEB - A Masqueraders Do You Love Me Baby Wand 1172 M- 600 They don’t come much better than this one and probably a tad rarer on issue than promo FEB - B Leaders (It’s A) Rat Race Superstar 100 M- 500 Out of Little Rock, Arkansas this is a superior soul funk mover from 1971. Very obscure 45 I’d say FEB - C Bob & Fred I’ll Be On My Way Big Mack 6101 M- 900 Great condition on this string-laden Detroit rarity which works well on the instrumental flipside too FEB - D Cody Black I’m Slowly Molding King 6148 D VG++ 300 One of the biggest spins of the last ten years without a doubt. Although not mint, it plays perfectly well. Check the sound bite FEB - E Products Come Down Providence 3271 VG++ 500 A new sixties discovery...now there’s a thing! Great group soul dancer previously absent from discographies of the label, has to be rare FEB - F Patience Valentine If You Don’t Come Sar 119 D VG++ 275 One of the monster R&B dancers and still packs dance floors — a “must” from Sam Cooke’s old label FEB - G Tami Lynn Run Away French Atco EP VG++ 200 Only on this French EP as far as I know — a quite superb Bert Berns 1964 mover. Originally with a picture cover which you might not be bothered about seeing as it depicts some sultry tart instead of Tami herself! Condition is a strong VG++ as well FEB - H Bobby Parker Get Right Sabu 101 M- 250 A strong, and certainly very rare, R&B dancer just waiting for the right deejay. Super early Deep soul screamer on the flip side FEB - I Gwen Owens Make Him Mine Lau-reen 1002 VG++ 200 How can someone make so many rare, i.e. didn’t sell, great records? From ’68 this is a lovely lilting dancer (I’m sure the backing track is to something else, but can’t quite get there) as is the flipside ‘One More Day’ FEB - J Mebeus Love’s Journey Vigor 1715 M- 250 Well the New York seventies label has plenty of goodies but it also has a definite RARITY. Very hard to locate, this quality dancer especially as the promo features only the flip ‘Party Crazy’ FEB - K Four Voices Your Love Is Getting Stronger Voice 1112 VG++ 1200 Not seen one of these for sale for quite a while — superb Detroit group mover of course FEB - L Jesse Johnson Left Out Old Town 1195 WD M- 350 One of the great spins from the “golden era” that wasn’t ever booted or reissued. Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
Come on Russ you'd be bored s***less without me stirring the pot. I think you don't want to give up on a scene that has been part of your life for so long. You obviously love the social aspect and have an amazing appetite for all genres of black music. It's not for me though mate. If there was anywhere playing new quality sixties I'd be there like a shot. As would hundreds of other people who have left the scene reluctantly, as the excitement of hearing the next must have tune have sadly long gone. I wish you well my friend, and admire your passion.
-
Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
I agree wholeheartedly with your post, I think most of us who have been forward thinking throughout the years have gone through the same process that you are currently undertaking. The problems you will realise a few years down the line are these: 1. People have been going through the same process as you since the late 70's early 80's and will say things like "The tunes you are playing are all oldies, we were playing them in [add year of choice]" 2. At some point you will start to struggle to find anything new to you that has any quality. Because like I already stated, many have gone before you and will have tried them out at one time or another. 3. If you decide to move the goalposts and start to play other types of music i.e. Funk, R&B, Titty f***ing shakers or any other crap masquerading as northern, then good luck to you. 4. Unlike the majority on this forum I am of the opinion that there are a finite number of top quality 60's records that fit in the hard to define category of northern soul. That number was reached long ago. The scene resembles a patient on 24 hours in A&E. Laid on a gurney with tubes and wires coming out of every part of it's body, a small team of determined but sadly delusional people giving electric shocks and CPU in a vein attempt to start the scenes heart again. Enjoy.

Four Dynamics Things That A Lady Aint Supposed Todo
It's actually a great beat to dance to Nev, but more than tempo, it's so moving you just have to dance. smileys are back, yaaahhh!

Four Dynamics Things That A Lady Aint Supposed Todo
Think that was me that played it at Paul's do. Fred didn't have it then, he may have got one since then.

Wanted - Hayes Cotton - Black Wing's Have My Angel - Resist
I once had a unreleased version on an old cassette tape. Bloody stomping production, fantastic. When I heard the released 45 I was very disappointed.
-
Four Dynamics Things That A Lady Aint Supposed Todo
Steve G that was me that used to play it. I got the mint copy out of Tim Brown's collection and sold it with everything else on here. Went to a private collector who isn't on the scene for £2300. I also bought the poor condition copy off ebay, which went to Soul Sam through Manship who dicked me and made a huge profit, allegedly. Superb record in every way, and I also love the Blue Rock version. First person I heard play it was Butch, but that means bugger all.
-
Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
I agree with all your points, but I don't have the disposable income to be able to collect rare vinyl, and I don't have the time or space required to be able to play vinyl on a good quality system. I totally agree that the sound of minty condition vinyl on a good system is the ultimate listening experience, and if money was no object then that would be my goal. In my own personal opinion, the playing of rare soul vinyl at home is partly responsible for some truly terrible Dj spots. What sounds good at home and what gets people up and dancing aren't the same thing.

Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
Life is all about opinions Benji. I'm just expressing mine. I like to be involved in a heated debate, I never get personal. Unfortunately the smileys have disappeared on my iPad again, so I can't use them to lighten the tone. No offence intended on my part, just opinionated debate. Smiley.

7 And A Half Grand! Am I Missing Something Here
That's a ridiculous analogy, there's a world of difference between the snake and Irma Routen. The example that Agentsmith has posted is a good one. That record was cheap and easily available because no bugger wanted it until Mr. Dobson played it. The finest example I have ever witnessed, was one night at Burnley, Fred Krol pulled Billy Davis - Stanky Get Funky out of his box and gave it a spin. F**k me! You should have seen the children of the night running up to the stage to see what it was. Now this was a record that was available from every record dealer for a tenner, until the day after the allnighter. You could not find a copy anywhere, because I tried hoping to make a few quid out of it. But I was too late. I rest my case.
-
Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
We maybe talking at cross purposes here then, as I have only ever collected dance music that has blown me away. I used to collect records to listen to when I was very young, but as soon as I had experienced "northern" then I never wanted to own anything else. If by collecting records you mean to listen to while relaxing, then that's something I would never do. Records are for playing out, anything else you can hear on Cd or any other modern method. I bought records to Dj with, otherwise I would never have been able to spend the amount of time and money that I did. If you don't buy records to Dj with, then what's the point?
-
Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
Here we go again........if they were any good I think they would have been played by now don't you? That's why all the tunes put up on this forum are either well known, or very average. If you had a real kicking tune that wasn't known, you'd be covering it up, not sticking it up on a public forum. If any youngsters are starting to collect records, they are going to want to own the records that move them. Not a load of third rate dirge that no bugger wants.
-
7 And A Half Grand! Am I Missing Something Here
It's you that's talking b*llocks my friend. Just because a record is known about by a few chin strokers, who have been about forever, and can recite the credits of every record that was issued in the U.S.A. doesn't mean it has to remain the same price forever more. In the real world, people are looking for something different to play out. And here I have to say that the majority of these "new to the dance floor" records aren't very good in the great scheme of things. But once they get some attention, these records will always go up in value as others "have to have a copy" it's the way it's always been. Availability x Demand = Value And if Butch plays it x 10.

Signed Eddie Parker - Love You Baby
If I remember correctly it was about in 1971? And was being played at non soul disco's, so it must have been re pressed way back then. Therefore those re issues would have been knocking about Stateside for a long time. I've had a few issues over the years, and none of them had the proper raised Archer stamp. So I would think the original is quite rare, even the issue.
-
Who Is Behind All These Reissues? Please Tell Me So I Can Shove
And I've said this a hundred times before. I can tell the difference between original vinyl and most re issues/boots. The sound quality is very different. Mind you, with the crap sound systems that most use, you would be hard pressed to notice the difference.

Better Without The Vocals
Exus Trek, Breakaway, Rosemary, Bari Track.
-
Preston Got Soul
Spelling errors aside, that Soul Incorporated looks totally at odds with the rest of the set??? Maybe you needed to be there?
-
What Do You Think ? New Topic For Values ?
If your heart rules your head [me] and you have paid top money for a 45, you will always try and get your money back, it's human nature. That's explains a lot of the high prices in the sales section.

The Trent Sisters
absolutely mate.

The Trent Sisters
I'm absolutely astounded that anyone into dance music can think that Joseph Webster is shite and the Trent Sisters is good. I am not usually a fan of 70's records but to me Joseph Webster along with Little Major Williams are the best examples of 70's dance music I have ever had the pleasure of dancing to. Amazing how we can all be into northern and yet have such massive differences in taste.
