  1. A couple of years ago I tried running an oldies night. I was out of work and bored so I was hoping to make a bit of money out of it and get some enjoyment out of playing some of the classics from the Wheel, Cats, Torch and the Mecca. Rather than the same old Wigan biggies. However, I struggled to get the numbers required, and the only way to get the punters to dance was to get the big Wigan tunes out. I was amazed that people that I thought had been on the scene a long time, we're coming up to the decks to ask what records were. I'm talking about massive Mecca records from the seventies, not obscurities. Makes you think just how many people on the scene today actually went anywhere back in the day.

  3. A few years ago we had a huge debate on this subject, which is why you won't get many takers. The upshot was that many promoters chimed in with claims that they were indeed OVO. Unfortunately most of those thought they were, but hadn't a clue what was being played at their own event.
  4. My own interpretation on this phenomenon is this; back in the day we all went out to hear this incredible music and dance our asses off. Today, most of us can't dance for long enough. And the pain that comes after we do dance is just not acceptable, or practical. So if you can't dance, what's the next best thing? Answers on a postcard please. Another little wanna be a Dj anecdote from me. I used to travel all over the shop to listen to Dj's who had big reputations, hoping to hear something fresh that would move me to dance. It's a very strange anomaly with this scene but, after years of doing this, the only people who are worth going to hear, are the guys who very rarely Dj. With the exception of Butch, Andy Dyson (and Mick H when he's in the mood) the best Dj's in my humble opinion are usually successful people who are too busy with businesses and family to be doing allnighters on a regular basis. These people have the one thing that you must have to become a great Dj ............. Great records. And that's the rub. Most of the people wanting to Dj, don't put any effort into finding their own tunes to play, and they don't have the finances in place to back it up. It makes me smile when I see the same old quotes spouted on here, "You don't need to spend a lot of money to put a good playbox together". Er, yes you do actually. "There's hundreds of great unplayed records out there" Yer right, after listening to a solid hour of these gems I'm calling the Samaritans. The saddest thing to me. When a brilliant dancer has to call it a day for medical reasons, and the best Dj's haven't got the time.
  5. so whats happens when they die ?thats some big collections hitting the market with few new buyers ! teds collections plummeted in prices when they died . Some incredible collections have already been sold, and many of the big rarities that are turning up on ebay are from the estates of deceased collectors. There seems to be quite a few American collectors of rare soul these days, and I have been told that the Japanese are back collecting again. The thing with investing in any commodities is it's risky. Doesn't matter whether it's antique furniture or antique vinyl, things go in and out of vogue but if you are in it for the long haul it doesn't matter a jot. if however you have your life savings in rare vinyl, you have to know when to get out of the market.
  6. Some spot on posts on this thread. And to Steve L I would say this. Butch is the best there is, and I used to follow him all over the country, but even he hasn't got any new quality 60's. When you hear him play every other weekend, it's the same stuff. Even his fantastic one off acetates can start to loose their shine. I can also appreciate that a great many people go out for different reasons than I did, but as I don't drink, and have never been involved with drugs, the music was my reason d'être. If you use the scene as a social life, then that's great. I was always looking for the scene that was eloquently described in Phil T's earlier post. Unfortunately I missed the Stafford era. Anyway, great thread. Good to know I'm not the only grumpy old man out there.
  7. There's been a few gone through eBay last couple of years. I thought it was a two known copy record at one time. Amazing the stuff that's gone through ebay the last few years.
  8. Thank goodness someone other than me that is willing to state the bleedin' obvious. Get a decent sound system FFS. I've been to so many do's that are run by people that think nothing of paying a couple of grand for a record, yet proceed to play it on a right pile of shite that isn't even set up correctly.
  9. You're all missing the point..........there's no more new, quality sixties tunes to be discovered. And we are all too old. Everything has a life span. All you are doing is giving the kiss of life to something that is already deceased. Just like the Teds did.

  12. Mine still hasn't arrived. Bummer.
  13. Brad is a legend mate. I got the first Chandlers off him in the 70's. he didn't think it would go because of the slow break in the middle.
  14. I stand corrected then Tony, Cliff obviously heard you play it. I should also have mentioned that you were responsible for bringing some great records to the attention of us all. That early nighter with you and Steve guesting was a classic night.
  15. Nobody was playing it though we're they?
  16. Yes but nobody was playing them, or interested in them. It's one thing knowing a record exists, it's quite another to have the taste to play it.
  17. Er yes it would. Like I said earlier, it has been selling for big money for a few years. But that was by people who knew what it was and had heard Cliff Camfield play it as Daydreams by the Daydreams in his set back when I was running Burnley. I remember Steve Green was desperate to get it back then and was advertising on here for it. Despite people on here not liking to hear it. A lot of the records that people are talking about now, we're played at Burnley and as a result have become sought after by other Dj's. Cliff Camfield is head and shoulders above anyone else, yes even the great Butch. He's the only person who I would go out to hear play a spot. Why?because he has great taste, and he knows how to entertain a crowd, and you will find yourself saying "wow! What the f**k is this" at some point during his set. Andy Killick is also responsible for playing some tunes that others have picked up on and have since become massive. I.e. the Proffs. Pottsy on the one and only occasion he Dj'd at Burnley was responsible for launching several records from obscurity to stardom. Including Dewy Black. Terry gets a lot of grief for singing the praises of the old Burnley. But the fact is, it was way ahead of anything else, and the passion that was created in the three and a half years it ran will never be repeated. If you missed it then the only way to get an idea of what it was like is to go to the next Burnley that Sean runs, and make sure you catch Cliff Camfield's spot.
  18. What a load of rubbish talked on here again. I was after a copy of Irma Routen a while ago. I asked all the big dealers, Tim Brown had never had it, I also put wants on here and scoured the internet. Nothing. I finally got one off the guy who had been playing the Daydreams side in his sets for ages, and because of that a lot of people were looking for it. As soon as I had recorded it and moved it on, one appeared on ebay I think it went for around £300 not sure. Sods law. In the scheme of things it isn't very good. But everyone is desperate for something new to play and that means that these type of records will get played out, and others will want to own them and that's when the price goes up. Supply and demand. The thread starter sounds very bitter because he sold it before the demand. And by the way, this record has gone for big money for quite a while. too many on here living in the past when big tunes could be found for sale at any allnighter and for peanuts. Yes and you could buy a terraced house for £2k around the same time. Get over yourselves. We all know that if you wait long enough the record you always wanted will turn up at the right price. The thing is, some of us want to own them when the emotion is still there, not 20 years later.
  19. Yeh, nearly as bad as £2k for Sir Joe on Ru jac.

  21. I've heard that Russian girls like an older man. Ha ha!
  22. There's too much discussion on here about how Dj's can make a venue. Promoters who haven't got a clue are the biggest problem. The old cliche of, find a room, beg borrow or steal any old p.a., invite your mates to be Dj's and the faithful will turn up in their hundreds, is in the main absolutely true. Anyone who wants to be a promoter should realise that people who travel great distances and pay their hard earned money, will expect a degree of professionalism. And most of all, they want to be entertained. Another common promoter faux pa is not sticking to the original ethos of the event. Letting every man and his dog do a spot because he will bring his mates with him. Or worse, turning a blind eye to playing boots is par for the course in my experience. Instead of trying to please everybody but actually pleasing no bugger, have some bollocks and stick to some principles. In a nutshell, put some bloody effort into it.
  23. My God I want to be young again. Stunning girl, and it states that it was shot in Moscow at the end. Northern soul dancing in Russia, who'd have thought?
