  1. And even more obvious, one issue is the traditional red and white, while t'other is blue and white - same design though. Hippo.
  2. Possibly "night owl" was picking up airplay as opposed to the other side, so that was the side they were concentrating on. Just an idea, but it certainly did happen. Hippo.

Picked up a mint w/d of this for three quid in a local shop about three years ago, along with a handful of other Wingates valued fairly low. Played it recently in the early spot at the Saracens and thought it sounded good again - enough for several people to ask about it...mind you I did risk it in the main spot at Exeter soon after I picked it up, and cleared the floor ...ho hum...

Yes, it was pretty popular at one time, mid-seventies I think - in fact Soussan somehow (anyone know how?) got hold of the backing track, called it "Love symphony", and stuck it on the back of "Strings a go-go", which from memory was summer '74; at least I know the first time it was on sale as a pressing was at Whitchurch all-dayer. Hippo.
  5. Curses Mr. Pitt...I knew I'd be cast as the bad boy in all of this, just 'cos I won't let it go Hippo.
  6. ......Thelma Jones "Salty tears"...and Faure's Requiem (reminds me of me mum!) Hippo.
  7. Please do, Ali - you'll make a Welshman very happy - and stop him hassling me for my copy!! Hippo.
  8. Sorry to disagree, quite like some of the girlie stuff, this has been back in my "play" box for a while and I keep threatening to spin it again. Bought mine from Dave Greet in the '70's (guess where... ), still got the tape marks from where it was covered up! On a similar note, dug out le Tre Femme "You better get back" on Uptight last night - another girly choon that's probably far too innocent sounding for these days! Hippo.
  9. Did US Atlantic have a spell of not doing specific demo's then Pete? I know that happened in the UK...
  10. Here's a head-scratcher for ya - what NS goodies can you never get on a US demo? For starters - Nolan Porters' "Oh Baby", "B" side of "Singer Man" which in itself was promo'd as a double-sided ABC white demo. Any takers? Hippo.
  11. Sadly KING Radio (from the Nore!) was too low powered to make it here to Cheltenham - 390 had more power so it got out much further. Those whose memories don't stretch back to before 14 August 1967 will never realise the breadth of music the pirates gave us, too much to take in to be honest! Somewhere on the net there's a clip of Radio London's opening day (23 December 1964), with the unmistakeable intro of Candy & the Kisses "The 81"! Obviously before the ship left the US they stocked up on the Billboard chart of that week! Jerry.
  12. You're right Tony, Mike Raven was more of a blues man and certainly on his later shows seemed to play soul under sufferance. However (creakingly old git speaking ) his Radio 390 pirate shows in early 1966 were required listening for a fifteen year old who'd just got the soulful bug! Back to the Gospel Classics and yes, it did get club play at the time, I can clearly remember it through a haze of crap beer and cheap lager...lent my UK issue to someone to spin at Yate in 1981, wish I could remember who as I've never seen it since! Hippo.
  13. Johnny Carr and the Cadillacs - You got me baby Maxine Brown - Torture Harlem jonns Reshuffle - You are the one I love Outer Limits - just one more chance Hippo.

Am I the only one who never went into Mr. M's? in all the times I went to the Casino I just never did! Still not exactly sure why, maybe I was happy enough with what was going on in the Main room... Hippo.
  16. Agreed - after all, he did a lot of research.
  17. Again quoting Mr. Rix, Dale Warren was Raynoma Gordy's nephew... Hippo.
  18. Yes, it is...but although I've got the Betty Lavette issue, I haven't heard Jackson's version for ages. BL's was a couple of years later though, wasn't it? Hippo.
  19. Yes, it did come out on Shout - and via the deal which saw a lot of Shout stuff issued here in th UK, on Jay-Boy in 71/72-ish. The connection isn't Detroit - cos she moved from there to New York, ostensibly to run that end of the Motown operation. Andy Rix's sleeve notes on the first Horace's Shrine album give more info, but of course she hooked up with Eddie Singleton, and that's the link to Jet Set. Never looked at the B-side credits on Strings 'n Things before! Hippo.
  20. Good choon, of course Col, but it's that slightly "raw" feel about "Someday..." that gives it the edge! Jerry.
  21. C'mon boy, it's the Saracens next Friday and we're expecting you there! Get well soon mate Hippo.
  22. Absolutely agree...you know how certain tracks will always remind you of sometime, someplace - well, this will always remind me of Fleetwood 2001, not the main room (that was The Swans "Nitty gritty city" clean cut that blew me away) but sitting in the caravan listening to RS playing it on his radio show. You had to be there...not that my brain was Hippo.
  23. Really chuffed for Dave - had a great laugh with Sarah t'other week, sat on the front of the stage, shouting rude comments at Dave - childish but fun Hippo.
  24. Add to that Ray Merrell - Tears of Joy... Hippo. PS Charles of Encore, nice to see that post, not everyone would have done that!
  25. There was an earlier thread on this choon - here's wot I posted at the time: "The genuine "first" copy was a white label 12" containing short and long versions (labels reversed) with the artist and title stamped on in red, catalogue number BIN 1, and the directive "Eat more cheese" scratched in the runout. Honest! It was sent out by the publishers, based at EMI in Manchester Square, with a personalised letter from Robert Blenman who worked there and was a top guy. That's the one with the best vocals as far as I'm concerned- and it was certainly big on the "urban" circuit in 1990. Well, it was for me, anyway!" The Driza1 promo is via 4th & B'way I think, as "Catch the fire" was Driza 2 - here's the chronological order in my collection: DRIZABONE REAL LOVE 1990 UK WHITE LABEL BIN 1 12" DEMO DRIZABONE CATCH THE FIRE 1991 UK 4TH & BROADWAY DRIZA2 12" DEMO DRIZABONE REAL LOVE (ALTERNATE VOCAL MIX) 1991 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRCDD 614 CD REISSUE DRIZABONE REAL LOVE (ALTERNATE VOCAL MIX) 1991 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRW 223X 12" DEMO DRIZABONE BRIGHTEST STAR 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY DBCD 1 CD DEMO DRIZABONE BRIGHTEST STAR 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRW 293 12" DEMO DRIZABONE CONSPIRACY 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRW 293 12" DEMO DRIZABONE DON'T YOU WANT ME 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BONELP 1 12" DEMO DRIZABONE GONNA HAPPEN 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRW 311 12" DEMO DRIZABONE LAST TIME 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BONELP 1 12" DEMO DRIZABONE LAST TIME 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY DBCD 1 CD DEMO DRIZABONE NEIGHBOURHOOD 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BONELP 1 12" DEMO DRIZABONE PRESSURE 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY DBCD 1 CD DEMO DRIZABONE PRESSURE 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRW 264 12" DEMO DRIZABONE REAL LOVE ('94 REMIX) 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BRW 311 12" DEMO DRIZABONE WOMAN AND A MAN 1994 UK 4TH & BROADWAY BONELP 1 12" DEMO ...and here's aforementioned letter:
