  5. Ey up Julian! They will if you let them.Regards Fred.
  6. In my opinion, the only way to stop the astronomical pricing of records is just don't pay the prices being asked.I'm sure for the initiated this is the case. This us the only way to reverse the situation. As for the unitiated and not aware of the actual value they will be the ones responsible for the current situation.if the true value of a record was known to newcomers then it would certainly help to keep prices to a realistic value, how we achieve this with a benefit to all buyers is another story. Regards Fred.
  7. I always think comparisons of the same record by a different artist is a good thing as it helps you realise just how good the original recording was and still is All the best Fred.
  8. what a thread, absolutely brilliant.I used to be indicisive but now i'm not so sure! Lol. All the best Fred
  9. One of my all time favourite groups. I remember where I first heard "people. It was at the Bin Lid in Dewsbury. If my memory serves me well wasn't it first released by Barbara Streisand. Other greats that were played on the Northern Scene all brilliant imo:- Here she Comes, The love that you're looking for and what would i do Regards Fred.
  10. Edwin Starr was one of a very few $oul artists where his vocals were always the same on the stage as they were on the record. Absolute raw talent.
  11. Jerry cook by a mile! Still sounds as crisp as when I first heard it all those years ago.Just got to be one of the top Northern $ounds of all time. Regards
  12. Slightly off the thread but I remember a certain "young Soulie" asking Mr Levine at the same Mecca for a record called "I'm a fatso", as the young lad honestly thought that was the title. No prizes for guessing what it was.lol! Regards Fred
  13. A big hi to you chalky and Dave n Pete, thanks for the replies ATB Fred
  14. A big hi Tony, am I right it is Tony Davison? Apologies if i've got your name wrong as I'm now into my 60's. I Remember Kev Smith like it was yesterday.Didn't he used to work in Stuarts in the oasis market? He used come over to Huddersfield and when I was working till 9.00pm stocktaking he'd pick me up with our Rob in his white Jaguar and we'd go to the Crown pub in Huddersfield to the Northern Soul Night. I remember one one occasion Rob came over with a friend from Manchester it might have been yourself Tony in a 2.3 vauxhall magnum that went like a bullet. We were driving past the railway station and being shown how fast it would accelerate when a copper stood in the road in front of us and put his hand up to stop us.How the f---k we didn't hit him I'll never know.he gave us a lecture and told him the accelerator got stuck.Kev used to frighten us to death in his jag, when we were out he used to go through red lights and see how many near misses we had.Proper daft.Do you remember kevs friend Sharon Christie she used to knock about with us as well and whatever happened to her? I think at the time she was going to move to Torquay or something like that.Funny all those years ago people used come over the pennines to yorkshire to a few Soul do's and we'd travel over to Manchester. Doesn't seem to happen as much these days. I still get about and DJ at one or two venues.I am one of the resident Dj's at the Leeds Central all dayers which are run bi monthly with the next one being on Sunday 1 till 8,then october and December.would be good if maybe you could get across to one of them and maybe with Ricky and missus and possibly Steve Proudlove as well? Look forward to your reply ATB Fred
  15. Years ago my late Brother Rob Ward used to knock about a bit in manchester and used to bring a guy over called Tricky Ricky. He used to come out with us for a drink and then go over to the Central In Leeds. Ive seen mentions of Ricky Warburton on here I think a few years ago and just wondered if it is the same guy and if he is still knocking about. If it is the same guy it would be great if I could contact him arrange with him to get over to one of our fantastic bi monthly all dayers at the Leeds Central. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.ATB Fred Ward
  16. Hi George,I'm sure your article will make good reading. Just wanted to ask when will the article be available on line to read and is there a Web address to access it? I am one of the resident Dj's at The Leeds Central Soul Club All dayers, which are run bi monthly .With the next one being on the 20th of this month, then in October you can keep track in the events column on here. Why not give us a visit, maybe you could do a review for your magazine? and you will experience a venue in the heart of Yorkshire and I promise you it will be a truly memorable day.ATB Fred Ward.
  17. Hi George, Wherever did you get the impression that Northern Soul is in decline?.Without a shadow of a doubt Northern soul is and has been for a long time on the increase. It is a subculture and genre that has now spanned the globe. You only have to look on here (soul source) in the events section to see how many Northern Soul nights, All nighters,Alldayers and weekenders there are here in the uk,Europe and in the world each week.I would go as far to say that there are far more than there ever was and continues to grow.I would respectfully suggest that you think of another way to discuss Northern Soul in your article, possibly covering how it started and to where it is today. I'm sure it would make interesting reading to many students who probably are not aware of what Northern soul is.Who knows we might even see Northern soul at Student union venues throughout the country!.I sincerely hope I come across as someone who is wanting to give you constructive comment and not having a go. Hope the article goes well.Best Regards a passionate "Northern Soulie" Fred Ward.
  18. Quite a number of years ago, would you believe I used to practice Karate in the Central on Saturday afternoons. Regards Fred (Nidan)
  19. Quite a few years back I was a budding food sales rep.and was out canvassing for business, in the ferrybridge are of west Yorkshire I was on my way home and had to call in to see a customer who ran a restaurant. When I walked through the door on the wall was a massive signed poster of Gladys Knight and the Pips, to which i said to my customer "I didn't know you were into soul " , his reply was i'm not but last night as I was closing a massive bus pulled into the car park. Out came this lady and said to me hI aam Glaadys (American accent) Knight and these are the Pips could you rustle up a bite to eat for us all. He cooked them a meal and had a wonderful conversation with them all.As they were going Gladys came back from the bus and gave my customer a signed poster. Regards Fred.
  20. John Carmody (Weasel) RIP A very good mate and sadly missed, i'm sure many "Soulies " on here knew him . Weasel strong as an ox, i remember it as it were yesterday when we were all staying at the Salisbury hotel in Scarborough our kid (Rob Ward) couldn't open his room window for some fresh air when Weasel came to the rescue. Not only did he open the window but somehow through sheer brute strength twisted the window in the frame. Good times. Regards Fred
