  1. No way £100 ! Starting bid was £100... I'd say £25 or £40 to the max. It's a good and not great record and it's not that rare anyway nor in-demand I believe unless... Made a classic by Barbara Lewis on Atlantic BTW

  4. 3 different pressing plant for likely 5 label variations (promos & stockers) The West-Coast plant like the one above on styrene and it's stocker counter-part. Then the Speciality pressing plant like this one; of which I've only seen this white labels with "plug side" for 'the Gallop' side suggesting it's a "promo copy" only never stating that. Then the Pennsylvania plant like those
  5. Off course play them home loud ! I was 7 years old when I was given (my guess is that it would have been thrown away otherwise) my first turntable, well it was a Teppaz pick-up (exactly like this) and a pile of then (1977) top tens crap 45's. Since that day I've always had to have a phono home and only upgraded through the decades my set-up and my record collection as well to fully enjoy the sound these babies can dish out on a properly thought from beginning to end hybrid build-up phono set-up ! With age, it get only worse when the sound at friend's or on a night out is just saturating from Hi's to Low's. The only way I know to give justice to your favorite music is to play it on it's most original and noble support; vinyl or styrene. Mp3's & Co. sound nowhere as good in real direct comparaison and can't never for the life of me give me a kick.
  6. I thought it was to do with the 200 release (red and WDJ), though it's with the long intro, but maybe not on some red ones then.... and the 201 yellow release. But that is only a belief I have... I'll be glad to learn better since I don't have it myself and am after the short intro...
  7. Not booted but re-issued as a look alike in a Syl Johnson double 45 "box-set" by the Numero Group team a little while ago... It was a re-issue of the Special Agent 201 release I think, the one with the longer-slow intro...
  8. Just for your info on the vinyl press they added extra strings that do benefit (it can be outrageous sometimes) the 'B' side 'no no no' that the styrene press don't have. According to that you might prefer to purchase one press or the other. Never the cut on the first label Pandora which should be a first take though... No Youtube sound clip at all for that side !?
  9. None of them are bootlegs. Just different pressing plants. It was a "common & cheap" record some 20 years back so it must have had some action originally. There's even a blue and black label press...
  10. Cheers for that Roburt, but I have no FB and will never. Someone else might do that and contact him and see if anything there can be clarified ? The stampers "theory" with Sonny Daye is what I was implying. On the Bad Boy records discography I only know of 1001 (S, S & W) 1004 (Eko) 1005 (S, S & W) and 1006 (S, S & W) and the LP. What would be on Bad Boy 1002 & 1003 ?
  11. Not true, it sounds the same (I test play both with ear witness to agree that the sound quality are the same) and I agree it has a "dodgy" look. Don't forget that these Bad Boys records are theirs and they just released them how and when they wanted. But unless they made a copy cat imprint of the original matrix, those shiny dark yellow press used the exact same matrix. So they where maybe made for low ride scene (meaning 8T's or later BUT WHEN EXACTLY ?) but likely through the "official" connexion.
  12. Hi there, I understand that there are 3 pressings of their first single. The pale, matt label yellow label is first (1972 or what ?) here on the top right, and the later third pressing with a shiny yellow label as here on the top left. There's also another one on the matt pale label with Records - Los Angeles, Calif. but not italic and with different larger fonts like the following Bad Boys N° 1004 releases. This issue should be either second or third in line (see third and fourth scan bellow). Oddity is that they copied the top half of both matt & pale label and had to redo with new fonts the lower half of the label to repress it on the shiny darker label. They all uses the same matrix and sound alike even though they must have different ages. Does anyone knows better what date they are the trio of them ? with the same fonts as this 1978 one

  14. OK Roburt, you're right there. Still the promotional copies of the Sylves distributed by Chess tend to show that it was around mid 1967 somewhere ! By January 1967 Chess promos were already using the "white and blue sky" label. Never more the white'N'faint pattern 'promotional copy - not for sale' label ones. And you're right about the Musicor release dates. They are mid and late 1966 ! Musicor 1179 – Porgy And The Monarchs - If It’s For Real Baby / That Girl – 1966 May/June Musicor 1221 – Porgy & The Monarchs – My Heart Cries For You / Think Twice Before You Walk Away – 1966 November/December So for the first self distributed Sylves to be from 1966, is not right. I agree. More likely the first Sylves saw the light mid 1967. And I'd believe that the Chess distributed copies were very quick following. Maybe...
  15. Cheers for that Roburt, I still await the copy to be definite on it to give it a spin. But as far as my memory goes from the last evilBay copy auctioned with sound-clip used the very same takes (tape) as on both Sylves but with an extra drum beat on the 'that's my girl' side to great-er effect. So it should not be a re-recording I remember. So indeed, like for you my guess is that 'love chains' is from the same studio session (I also noticed that the session numbers were following on both Verve's) and so pre-dates 1968 ! The first self distributed Sylves is around mid to late 1966. Verve is also known for it's second round re-issues like with the Wilson Pickett from their CUB catalogue (1962) pressed on Verve in 1965 to make then bigger sales than the firsts Correct-Tone and CUB runs altogether.

  17. Hi Rob, yes first one I saw was last year I think on the evilBay in vg- something and it had a sound clip that made me almost fall out of my coach ! But the condition kind of put me off then. I love both sides ever since I have my promo copy on Sylves (25 years +), but when I heard the soundclip of the Verve of 'that's my girl' with the 2-times drum beat on top of the original track, I knew I need to have a Verve copy as well. I might let go my minty promo on Sylves when I receive my Verve one, but that's nothing for you I believe since you're after the Verve 'mix' now. Sorry but it's a keeper for me. It's as far as I know one of the overlooked rarest soul Verve 45 out there. But I still would like to know what's the story behind the last 45 (revived a year and a half later after the first Sylves) of Porgy with the Monarchs and it's real rarity factor. Stories like the Junior McCants 'try me for a new love' on King or Frankie Lyman 'I'm sorry' on Apple have the most grave explanation; sudden death of the artist ! Likely here it's not the case, but could be a contract disagreement issue or something...
  18. So underrated in the 6T's, there is only little information on the group to be found anywhere. It shows as their records sales never matched the talents they dished out. We are many to love all the materials they did A, B and unissued sides. But what went "wrong" with their last double sider on Verve 'that's my girl'/'the girl and the boy' ? I understand that the self distributed Sylves came out after their venture on Musicor. Often pointed to be from 1966 (mid to late), the record apparently had enough exposure to convince the executives at Chess record to do a deal for a wider national distribution by early 1967 (or late 1966) likely. The Chess promotional copies used a special design (promotional copies - not for sale faint like transfer paper upside-down repetitive background pattern) from mid to late 1966 (for their catalogue numbers between Chess N°1958-1984) and started using that typical font for the credits by early 1967. Both the specific promo label and the font were used for the promotional Sylves copies distributed by Chess. That is how I concluded this issue to be from late 1966 or early 1967. By mid 1968, Porgy and the Monarchs came back with a deal with Verve to release 'love chain'/'magic music makers'. Arrangements again provided by the very same Richard Tee. 'love chains' is actually cut in exactly the same mold as their 'that's my girl'. It even sounds like it was recorded in the same session ! Things that makes you go Mmmh... Finally Verve issued a wonderful (tape) 're-worked' version of 'that's my girl' backed again with 'the girl and the boy' of which only a few promo copies escape into the wilderness... The Verve promo onlies copies around are so few about they don't even seem to have been promoted properly. What actually happened there ? Was it "withdrawn" or what ?
  19. I remember it was believed to be from the same pressing plant. Same label specifications with the micro shiny rings and so forth. But not from the same batch since that Rita Graham is only LP only and re-release on a "missing" catalogue number and passed on to some "chosen few"... The dubious last batch in question was only carbon copies of well established big tickets NS biggies. There were 50 numbers more or less. A rather non exhaustive list was given only with artist names and Sam Williams was amongst.
  20. Isn't this one from that very "mysterious" lot to give away (never to be sold) to the chosen few ONLY done a few months back ? A bunch of carbon copy (on vinyl only) of some of the big tickets number were done, given away and STILL some ended sold on the evilBay...   21. OK I give in, not that I was assertive or definetly affirmative. Or was I ? The original question wanted opinions... but indeed after some digging' for the fonts issue (sorry if I upset anyone ) plus the matrix facts (in this day and age where so many weird things turn up) it finally convinced me to believe that this West-Coast press may indeed be the rarest pressing of it !   22. Looks dodgy to me. Fonts are not right, too many of them. Plus I am only aware of the 3 pressing plants for this one; unless proven wrong... this is the first one before picked up by Atco for national distribution and then; exist also as WDJ, exist also as the very rare orange stock, and then this one from the same pressing plant as the first not Atco distributed, no WDJ apparently... to this day !
