Funky Soul
Got what you mean now Bearsy, good philosophy to have, but tough to follow for us dinosaurs I do think though that if we fast forward 20 years, clubs/countries that are very free thinking now about what is played, will have their own groups of people reminiscing about the direction they were taking in the beginning, and longing for 'the good old days'

I think you've been misinformed about the Dome Bearsy, David Flynn, Carl Fortnum, Alan H, Greg, all lovers of soul music, add in some of the guests, Andy Rix, Ady Croasdell, Dave Rimmer, Andy Dyson, etc and the picture i formed of the venue, was that they were all into soul music and at the forefront of championing the underplayed and unknown, alongside the 100 club, scenesville and These old shoes. I never went to Stafford, but I've heard enough of the music via being told, ''stafford spin'' or podcasts, to put that into the same category

It's a problem if you're expecting people who've danced the same way for close on 40 years to radically change their style. I've just listened to the record again, and bearing in mind what Kev said, and yourself re: challenge have concluded I was wrong, and I could dance to it, which I'm pleased about because I really like it
-
Funky Soul
Yes you're probably right, but if your target audience are people who dance traditionally to northern, a problem is created.

Northern Soul Book
I read it and enjoyed it, no airs and graces, it's quite short so you'll probably read it in a day

Northern Soul Book
Don't know if you're on about Little Reg's book ''searching for soul'' or Brian Waterhouse's ''Going back''. I think Brian is on here, but is definitely contactable via facebook, https://www.facebook.com/brian.waterhouse.73

Funky Soul
Been saying this for years, with no allegiances to any particular club or style, you just judge the record on it's merits, but I don't think that's generally a British mentality.

Funky Soul
I'd dance to it, but I don't really see how it's classed as funk, or is it not? To be fair, I'd also dance to Tony Galla as well
-
Funky Soul
I think the record is great, but if I was sitting down, it just wouldn't make me jump up to dance, the structure is wrong IMO
-
Funky Soul
Very apt, what with it's ''Top gear'' connection

A brilliant philosophy

Are Dj Bookings/spots Incestuous?
I'm aware of that Andy, and agree, but if an event has been publicised, then they have to supply DJs from somewhere, because they'll still have paying customers coming through the doors.

Are Dj Bookings/spots Incestuous?
Taking up this point, how many top DJs are there, and more importantly who are they. It's all well and good saying somebody should book Mick H, Andy D, Sam or Ted M for instance, but they can't spread themselves around all the venues on the same night, so someone somewhere is going to have what's considered by some ''a sub-standard DJ roster''.

Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more
Yep, remember it well, used to go round the charity shops looking for Demob suits, single breasted jackets, no vents, and a very cool look it was as well, H&S and public awareness, wasn't what it si today, so never a thought to check for p*ss stains in the crotch...... happy days

Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more
This doesn't make sense, I think Steve G pointed out, how can we now, approaching 60 portray ourselves at 20, do you not think an audience would notice we were all slightly beyond our sell by date? It's a piece of drama, film makers use actors to tell their story, that's all Elaine is doing, how about we watch the film when it comes out, then give an opinion? Still really looking forward to this film

You've just told me to contribute something positive or leave the thread, now you're telling me it's ok for others to not be positive? Ok, I'll give you an example of what I mean, Rod put up a list of records played at his venue under the banner of underplayed and cutting edge, only for it to get torn apart as exactly not that. My level of knowledge about the music isn't the same as for example yours, or Steve Gs, so you both may have known every record mentioned, but I didn't. So if I read those comments, I could conclude, that venue wouldn't be what I'm looking for, if I was looking for something a bit different. I'm not saying that would be the case, I like to make my own mind up by being there, and judging for myself, but that might not be the same for everybody.

May have escaped your notice, but I did say, as usual no input from oldies fans, as it's them that are coming in for the biggest roasting (as usual) I think that's relevant. Some of us on soul source might think the site gets dragged down by topics like this, with their obvious bias, but clearly that doesn't matter, we're just asked to leave the building. I'd best go now as it's ''big boy's playtime'' again.

And it answers the other burning question, why the lack of playlists, which DJs in their right mind is going to put one up, only to have it shot to pieces by the Justified and Ancient

First four quotes are from you Chalky, so I don't see how Kev's is very much different? Pretentious nonsense is how I'd describe the thread, I note that once again, there are very few real oldies fans taking part, could be they may feel out of their depth, but most likely they're out enjoying themselves to music they like. Kids
Whilst not in the Sheffield or Chesterfield area, one of my mates bought his little daughter to the Stute in Melton Mobray, she wasn't any sort of problem, and looked like she was enjoying herself. Yes the northern scene is an adult environment, but I'd like to think most of us can allow for the odd kid, we're pretty much big kids anyway

It's a local soul night, lets say for the sake of argument that it attracts 200 people, what proportion of those 200 actually want to know if it's an OVO event or not. I'd suspect the number to be quite small, so why would a promoter shoot him or herself in the foot by appeasing a minority? Just trying to get some perspective on what's basically been 3 topics about the same subject in the last couple of months

I guess so, in the old days it used to be the dance floor that would decide whether something 'cut it'. looks like I am a dinosaur after all
