  5. I am really torn on this one, like Jo I was sneaking off to wigan at 15-16, sometimes after a 8-9 hour shift working on a hamburger stall or candy floss stall on the promonade ok not I didn't have as far to travel as Jo, and when my son was about 15-16 I would take him out to some of the places I went and I am still not sure I did the right thing, but I think when we were younger, everyone was younger....errrrrrrrrrr if you know what I mean. I am not sure I now feel it is healthy for anyone younger than 16 to be attending events. I was DJing from when I was about 14 but that was at youth clubs with young people, not people old enough to be my parent/grandparents. These youngsters like Pete, probably know far more than I know now as I was off the scene for so long, but can they please stay away till I catch up please I want to see young people out and about and enjoying what we had and being the future of the scene but I think any younger than 16 is pushing it a bit to be going to and DJing at "adult nights" on Liscence premises (not sure either how the law stands on that its changed so much since I was in the pub/club trade), and I certainly don't want people any younger than 16 on soul source or at venues I attend (apart from weekenders cos thats a bit different) for many of the reasons other people have stated earlier, some of the spats on here can get pretty hairy. ANd in answer to Pete's original question "who's gonna carry on the scene" why me of course!!!!! cos Baby look at me And tell me what you see You ain't seen the best of me yet Give me time I'll make you forget the rest I got more in me And you can set it free I can catch the moon in my hands Don't you know who I am Remeber my name Fame I'm gonna live forever I'm gonna learn how to fly High Will someone turn that bloody Kareoke machine off QoFxx
  6. While I think there is a place for this record to be played out, it should be either at the end of a set or the end of a night, as lots have said before me it's a great "uplifter" and leaves people on a high but possible does't fit in the middle of a set. only my humble opinion and what do I know QoFxx
  7. Whats really worrying is that, after over 30 years of soul nights, I am finally begining to remember what DJs have played, think I need to increase the vodka intake to prevent turnng into a QoFxx
  8. Thanks for confirming that Pete I was begining to wonder whether it was just the vodka causing me to imagine things QoFxx
  9. Bugger all Still waiting for 3 record boxes, a record, a USB cable for my phone, a lambretta fridge magnet, oh and a cheque for 152. All seems to be in the void that is the back log of post in the sorting office QoFxx
  10. We could get into the argument "does rare necessarily mean good". It is one of the few records of that genre that does fit in. IMHO Cetainly don't expect or want to hear a motown set at somewhere like the Ath and and I know it wouldn't happen but this one track just does seem to fit, don't know why. QoFxx
  11. I may be wrong and he can correct me with this but I am sure Steve G ended, or played very near the end of his set at the Ath earlier this year and it filled the floor, and if I am not mistaken I am sure Mick Smith has played it out. QoFxx
  12. Cos its a brill record and still played out by some DJs with taste QoFxx

I once bid and won a record only to find out it was toby, I was alerted to this when he rang me to tell me, half and hour after the auction had finished, I had just bought a record off him and would bring the record the following week when I saw him......................it was a nice cheapie and he wavered the £3 for the reocrd as well as the postage, hence his feedback was very good, what else can you leave a seller for a free record, would of saved him the ebay fees had I known he was selling it QoFxx
  14. And it goes without saying, Karen & Rob you have my full support QoFxx

Where I bow to your superior knowledge on most things I can't agree with you there chalky, it is not a progression, mostly what is known as "modern" nowadays has a totally different make up to 60s stuff so how can it be a progression when it is totally different. QoFxx

Quite simple Tony, just don't read it as I very rarely read any of the "disco" threads, its life and you have choices, just make them QoFxx

No just had a very long week, and I LIKE SKA/Reggae ANd probably at my age I should of been in bed with my horlicks about 2 hours ago and with the advancing years becoming more and more of a grumpy hormonal old woman and actually enjoying it you can get away with so much more QoFxx

Sorry, but thats total bollox, the modern variation as you call it, is "disco" to many of us and has nothing to do with NS but we have to endure thread after thread about it i.e. a whole thread devoted to Travares. If modern is acceptable then so should SKA/Reggae be, as they are far more to do with NS soul music as is RnB and probably beach music and doo wop, than moderrrrrrrrrn will ever be. I certainly don't advocate banning "modern" I just choose not to read the threads about it I am not trying to do the you are only in your early 40s thing and us oldies know best but, I know that when I first got into NS in about 1972/73until about 75 SKA/Reggae were the fringe to the scene not bloody disco ANd don't bother coming back with the "move on" angle or the "played out oldies" thing, I have respect for the "oldies" but don't want to hear them anymore than I want to hear "disco" when I am out but I am prepared to tolerate it for an hour or so at a one room event because I respect other peoples tastes for derivation from the key focus of the scene which IMHO is and should rightly be 60s raw soul with the a beat that makes chills run down your spine and make your feet move. I love Northern (and I mean 60s cos I don't class anything else as northern) but I also like some RnB, SKA and Reggae, all be it to a lesser extent so I do not have much to listen to at home, it's nice and refreshing to be able to listen to some of it now and again and anything is better than some of the "disco" or "modern" that some of you like to go on about. If I went to a do where there were three room, Northern, Modern or SKA/Raggae you wouldn't see me in the modern room unless my life depended on it. For example at the last Rocket all nighter, there were three rooms, Northern, RnB and SKA/Reggae and it was a nice change to spend most of the night listening to the SKA/Reggae for a change instead of that infernal Disco that people seem to think they have to play these days. But if I am at a one room event I certainly don't moan if there is a certain amount of modern played cos you have to cater for all tastes on this scene which has become more diverse recently than ever before. If we had all single genre events the numbers would be so thin on the ground nowhere would ever survive. Plus I have many friends who I have met through the scene that prefer modern so we all get to mix in one big "melting pot" so to speak and would never of met otherwise. QoFxx
