Has The Bubble Burst?
Why do Modern fans say any argument about playing modern at a Northern do is "tired" Is it because the statement is so palpably true that you do not actually have an argument? I would love to see the comments from the modern crew who attended a modern night, and had to sit through an hour of pure 60ts northern. Unfortunately, most northern do's now seem obliged to play at least an hour of the 70/80/90s stuff and it always puzzles me why. As stated though, this is Soul Source, all our opinions are valid, and I wouldn't want it any other way. ATB Brian B

Has The Bubble Burst?
"Music played before 1996 has its place"? We wouldn't play Northern at a modern do, so why should we want to hear modern at a northern do?

Fights At Soul Do's
Somewhere on tape I have a record of a scuffle at Wigan in 74. A guy can be heard saying "right then". You here a kerfuffle and then he says "now f... off before I really start". I didn't actually see it as I was looking through the boxes, but apparently he was a bit handy! Also at the Mecca from 72 to 74, the Burnley - Blackpool football rivalry used to surface at times. We had one mega punch up just outside the Highland Room with some yobs from downstairs. Bez (Steve Berry) knocked one of 'em out with one punch. Happy days spent defending the faith!

Two Bass Hits
I'll beat Mr Moore to it with Bernadette. A bass line so complex that no one, I think I am right in saying, has managed to actually perform it the way James Jamerson did. A virtuoso performance from the undoubted master.

Lighten Up Baby With Male Vocals
I'm willing to immediately double that price for one of my all time faves. I have Levine on tape playing this at Blackpool Mecca in late 73. That intro on ATLE is brilliant, but gives no indication of what is to follow. Absolute class record.

What A Record
Hi Jamie, Can't do it technically, and I don't have it anyway. Anyone else help?

What A Record
Heard this for the first time last night on American Music Makers label. Apparently Sonji is Cassius Clay's first wife, and was released just before he turned muslim. What a record. Is it played out, who has it, who discovered it and how much is it? Wow!

Jimmy James - A Man Like Me
Hi Simon, To the best of my knowledge this was never played in the main room at Wigan Casino. I know some of you may not believe this, but the early days of the Casino, from 73 to around 75/76, before the invasion of the younger element, was possibly the coolest place to be, and certainly had a great track record of uncovering great new sounds, and in many ways was a Torch spin off. You had to know who to avoid, you never went to the bogs on your own due to the many rollings that took place, and the average age was around 21-23. Obviously, as the pace to discover new, danceable tracks became paramount, the musical quality suffered. But I never heard this played then. It was a divvy-do record and would have been laughed at.

Jack Ashford@ronnie Scotts
Also in yesterdays Times in the T2 supplement. The reviewer gave them 4 out of 5 stars, but it sounded like the show content was similar to the last tour.

Ric Tic
There are 4 or 5 copied CDs floating around Burnley at the moment with ALL the Ric Tic stuff on, including All Turned On which I have not heard out since at least 1972. I'll have a look at 'em when I get home and post more info. There are sleeve notes with them, but who copied them and from where I have no idea. I also have 7 CDs of unissued Motown, studio out takes. tracks being laid down with Joe Hunter doing the vocals, and first passes by artistes such as the Supremes, Barbara McNair YGLMB etc. Maybe the same source?

Tunes You Hated, But Love Now
Can't agree with you on this. There was absolutely no difference in the way people danced to this at the Casino. Its clearly out and out northern and always has been. ATB Brian B

I Need Your Quotes For A Book
Told to me by Bev Parker, but not sure who said it first.. If you have to ask what Northern Soul is , then you'll never know....

Jackie Day R I P
Thanks Ady/Jim Great information as usual. I spent a happy hour last night reading the sleeve notes from the 3 Dave Hamilton CDs. It seems like he was another great guy, but how sad he and Little Ann (Bridgeforth) died just as they were starting to get some real recognition over here.. Plus, Chico from the Tokays, who died a day or so after learning that his groups music was big on the northern scene. I tell you, appreciate all these people now, because they ain't getting any younger.

New Kent 45s
Before Its Too Late cw Oh What Heartaches, following on from yesterdays sad news. One question you may be able to help me with Adey, why was the quality of Chris Kings/Universals Motown CDs This is Northern Soul Vol 1 and 2 so poor, when we had waited for years for some of the tracks, and all are obviously Motown and we all know the studio quality of the Detroit Guys?

Jackie Day R I P
The vocals on Before Its Too Late and Oh What Heartaches are immaculate. One of my favourite female vocalists. Thanks to people like Ady with the Kent stuff, and the early jocks who pushed Jackies records, as it not only exposed us to her talent (and countless others), but also gave her/them the knowledge that they had recognition and respect in this country. It may not have made them a fortune, but I bet it gave them some belated satisfaction. Thanks Jackie.

" Ugly Betty " Channel 4 Friday January 5th
Probably some 70s shite as there is quite a selection of that available.

What Tune Defines Northern Soul?
Steinways is fantastic, both sides. But wasn't it played in 1973, possibly 72? Frankie Beverley ITWYW or Love Love Love for me!

Interesting Read ? Some Points About The Uk Northern Soul Scene And Us Soul Music
I have 2 friends on the scene who really don't identify with the ethos of being a NS music lover. They show this by calling our revered artists "co**s", "n*g***s" and so on. I cannot understand what they are doing on our scene. They both vote BNP and our longish friendships have deteriorated as they now (I think) use these terms to wind me up and get a reaction from me. How can you love the music but not identify with the people who recorded, wrote, arranged, played or produced this life changing experience of ours? Maybe its just me?

Who was first to play
ATR was knocking about Burnley in 71 - 72. Don't where it was first played though. For some reason, probably the Record Exchange, it was a reasonably common record in Burnley at that time Gene Toones was definitely spun at Wigan 75 - 76, cos that where I first heard it. Sorry, but I can't remember who played it

Soul Icon needs help
Dave, We have just donated the proceeds of our works Christmas do, £675, to the Pendleside Hospice. They might be a good recipient of any collection. We have raised over £2500 for them this year. The story would also get in the Burnley Express if the soul community supported them!

Conversation Stopper/if Looks Could Kill
Thanks for giving my wife and anyone who knows me the laugh of the year by saying I'm a sensitive soul! How do you think my response could be misinterpreted and thought to be offensive?
-
Conversation Stopper/if Looks Could Kill
So this is all about soul music and not offensive?
-
Conversation Stopper/if Looks Could Kill
Is this the worst thread we have ever had on Soul Source? What the bloody hell is everyone on about. Also some of the responses are just offensive. Get real. This type of thread will drive people away.
