  1. What difference does that make??? Incidentally a pure 60ts Northern Soul record may be a record picked up on the NS scene that was made in the 60ts and doesn't sound anything like Carstairs in 74 and any other records of that ilk that were subsequently played at Blackpool Mecca, Cllethorpes and the Casino. And no I am not an "oldies" fan, but an appreciator of Pure Northern Soul from the 60ts, which is the scene I choose to follow, not 70s, 80,s 90,s disco pap. ATB, Brian
  2. Simon Where would this leave the Northern Soul scene? It wouldn't exist. The "Modern" records are not and never will be "Northern Soul". Discussed many times before. As I said yesterday on another thread, the modern fans wouldn't like pure 60ts Northern soul played at their venues. Keep modern away from ours.
  3. Dave Moore lives in Florida. Does Dave know this guy? (Hope our friend doesn't ever upset Dave. You wouldn't need Joey Singleton then!).

Brian, Brilliant reply. Pete S, absolutely bang on. What would I have changed? The rule that says seventies and eighties crap must be played at Northern Soul nights.
  5. Hi, May be able to help you. Let me know what you are mising and I'll trawl through mine. ATB, Brian b
  6. I prefer Marvin's version, in fact I can't agree with any of those comments about Marvin!
  7. Never liked Gladys, can't think of one track that I would play. Marvin was ace. For me its Levi Stubbs. ATB Brian
  8. Burnley far and away has the most soulies per head of population in the small town category. From the Wheel right through to now the town is full of us.
  9. There has always been "solidarity" on the Soul Scene. We drink together, we fall out, we support each other, but we are not a union. We do not picket. We treat as we find. We never fight each other, we just get on with listening to the music. If people are upset or dismayed, or affected in any way by Whitby, they must choose to do what they feel they must do. Will everyone never ever attend another KR event because of Whitby? Its up to them and no one else. Blackpool was tremendous. The records were too safe, but the venue jaw dropping. Whitby by all accounts was simply unfair. We just get on with it, and people will continue to make their own choices in life and on the Soul Scene. Is there also a bit of displeasure from the purists because the weekend was a success? ATB Brian

1971 for me. I had a black blazer and a Prince of Wales check jacket made at Burtons, With my black button down shirt, red v neck jumper, black parallels, black Royals or tassle loafers and black or red socks. Not forgetting the crombie and hanky with pin in the top pocket. I still think we looked good in them days.
  11. Bloody Hell, I meant Gladys, not Martha. It was too early in the morning. Gutted!
  12. Ghoul Don't Make Me Bite. Batty Sigler? Stake My Heart, Mary Conway? Be Young Be Ghoulish Be Happy? Really sorry!
  13. I think Smokey's version is quite Northern. The intro is brilliant. Marvin did record it first, but Martha's version, which isn't a patch on Marvin's, was released first. As with many other Motown records, how big would this have been on the scene if it had just been discovered?
  14. I used to have a version by the Gladiators on a yellow UK label. Can't remember what the label was though. Can't beat Bunny's version!

Ahem!.The Vandellas became MARTHA REEVES and the Vandellas.
  16. I take it this is a joke question?
  17. What a fantastic article! It is absolutely amazing how Sliced Tomatoes saw the light of day. I have always been convinced the the Just Brothers were the Funk Brothers, and this confirms it, with Joe Hunter, Eddie Willis and Richard Pistol Allen, along with Frank Bryant and the other guy giving their all. This must be THE finest Northern Soul instrumental. Thanks Rob, I am very impressed with your depth of research. Brillant, well done and thanks! ATB Brian B
  18. --> QUOTE(mark.b @ Oct 3 2006, 06:45 PM) link ginger had one originally and sold it to m koppel i think then he bought it back first time martin sold up dont know if he has still got it though mark Thats correct Mark. Ginger told me a couple of years ago that he paid a hell of a lot more to get it back than he sold it for. ATB Brian B

I quite like it. Would have been big at the Casino (if it had been produced/made by then)?
  20. Out on the Floor and Love Love Love were big on the Northern scene from late 70 onwards. Wigan commenced Sept 73, however, they were both re-activated at the Casino and became huge. Bobby Hebb was re-released on the back of its popularity at the Torch. ATB Brian B

Anyone for Mary Love I'm In Your Hands. I also love Lay this Burden Down by the very same.
  23. If this is goodbye. Harry and the Kevannas ( I think). I also think its Harry Starr of Another Time Another Place fame. Big spin for Karl W 10 years ago. ATB Brian
  24. The Electron is now run by the "old chaps" (Frank) son! He stocks all the top northern and motown CDs and deals in second hand vinyl. Too many guys get into the shop mid week for me to have any chance of picking anything up. The Record Exchange was ace. My wife's best mate worked there during holidays and weekends. Brad used to ask her for records, and would write a list for her. She used to find the records and keep em. Later on she gave me a load of 'em! The Electron is still in the same place and looks exactly the same, but there are no sound booths on the wall. It hasn't changed one bit. ATB Brian B
