Empty Dancefloor - Dj Reactions
Hi Steve tha would The Hollingwood Hotel me thinks, great venue with travellers from afar at times and proud to have been part of it at the time. Chesterfield was mainly an oldies hot spot but much of the current crowd then were a bit open minded and were happy to give something a listen and in your case a dance. Unfortunately the same cannot be said today. I believe a Dj is there to both educate and entertain and it is all a question of getting the balance right. Why people want to listen to juke box DJ's is beyond me. What f**** me off thoughs when a particular venue is advertised as anything BUT an oldies night and you gets fools complaining and asking for summat from Wigan.

I've said it before it isn't always the DJ's fault. You/they could be booked to play a particular type of set but it is totally worng for the crowd, or much of the crowd but it is what the promoter wanted.

I said imagination. Dunno why people assume it to mean unknowns?- John Manship Auction Results 25-2-2015
Does anyone play unknowns? The lack of imagination goes right through the scene and extends to the so called rare or upfront side of the scene, its full of hotboxers chasing the what others are playing rather than seek out something for themselves. As I said I am not slagging anyone off. I am bemoaning the fact that imagination is frowned upon, by promoters especially but by DJ's afraid of any negative criticism and the though of losing bookings because of it. It is detrimental to any music scene as it ends up completely retro, forever looking back rather than forward. It really should be the best of times musically nowadays but it really is stale and backwards looking. This is evident in the records that are indemand and the pices they achieve at times. What are people supposed to do, not say anything that would appear critical, are people not allowed to voice their opinion just because one or two don't like to hear it? Far more appear to agree with what I have said than not.- John Manship Auction Results 25-2-2015
I'm bemoaning the lack of imagination not slagging anyone off and as this is a forum for debate all opinions are valid.- Writing Credits Eddie Floyd's "i Never Found A Girl"

What is the topic? I thought it was about the daft prices being paid!- Writing Credits Eddie Floyd's "i Never Found A Girl"
wouldn't be the first time an artist has claimed something to be his that isn't and there are various examples of this amongst what we collect.- John Manship Auction Results 25-2-2015
Spot on Pete and yes we all know people who have done what you describe and some whomare doing it today.- Al Williams.....i Am Nothing
But what about when you've heard it for the the zillionth time and have been listening to it for 30 or 40 years? It is no longer special is it? DJ's pay 2.5k for a record and have to wear it out. The fact that they buy these trophy records usually makes them lose their imagination which is sad. i'd like to think it was collectors paying some of these prices but somehow I doubt it.- John Manship Auction Results 25-2-2015
Glad you understand where I am coming from Kev anyone can buy a set if you have the money. Not everyone can use their imagination or put a set together and actually make it flow. Some of the worst sets I've heard are from trophy hunters who only play records because they cost them a fortune and not necessarily for the quality.. Many of them are disjointed and do not flow and are frankly boring. You hear many of tne so called rarest of the rare every week if you are out and about. Some of those who spend thousands don't even have the balls to play an unknown.- John Manship Auction Results 25-2-2015
It is the only way to get bookings and get on on this scene Pete, buy trophy records and spend 1000's in the process......pay way over tne odds and get talked about even more, even better. Not many promoters are interested nor have the balls to put someone behind the decks who uses his or her imagination and who put a well thought out set together irrespective of the price.- Chuck Jackson - Waiting In Vain - 7" Emi

If you can't do it right as they say don't do it at all, leave it to those that can And there's plenty who can and do, not just a few, there are more than enough Dj's to satisfy this scene whether it be oldies or newies.- As John Mcenroe Said.... You Cant Be Serious
You can buy the whole box set for not much more, that is why greed is mentioned. As said in a previous topic some aren't happy with making twice what they pay, they want five or six times what the pay, that is greed. I can understand the capitalism argument for genuine rarities but prices like this are simply exploitation.- Wizard Of Oz, Northern Style
