  1. Ric Tic is under all the rest. It was competition bought by Gordy simply to eliminate the competition. some fabulous recordings on Motown and its various labels, particulatly the unreleased stuff but too much rubbish and middle of the road pop for me, that's why i say the rest is streets ahead. Add up tne releases on the labels in Detroit alone and it would out shine even Motown. Then all the Philly, New York, West Coast etc etc......
  2. All the rest, streets ahead.
  3. Sam's giving this some turntable action.
  4. Great nights at Piercebridge and a top notch venue. Enjoyed everyone and had the pleasure of spinning a few in both rooms.
  5. As I'm away a lot I have to download them and listen, Three hours far too long. An hour and half would be far better and better received I think. Track list would be good as well.

    A record was initial pressed to gauge demand. Not every company could afford to press 1000's from the off like the majors. If the first batch sold more were pressed. If they didn't sell they moved on to the next recording. I would say every company like Soultown's aim was to sell as many of each recording they could. Just because a record didn't sell doesn't mean that wasn't the initial intention behind the release. I would have thought without distribution, promotion and DJ's on your pay roll chart success was never going to happen but that doesn't mean they weren't out to sell as many as possible. Again Northern Soul didn't exist when Ray Agee etc were recorded. It wasn't recorded for a small underground scene 1000's of miles away. It was recorded for the local black market. The Uk Rare Northern Soul Scene gave them a second lease of life.

    I know what Northern Soul is, I know what R&B, crossover etc is as well. They certainly aren't sub genres of Northern Soul. They are genres of music that make up a scene called Northern Soul, not a genre of music. Think we'll agree to disagree as we will be arguing black is white all week long.
  11. Can we ask how much for, purely for future reference and guidance?

    Ray Agee is a R&B or hard edged soul as some call it record adopted by the Northern Soul Scene. There is no genre of music called Northern Soul. The Northern Scene is an umbrella name for a scene encompassing different genres of music, by and large black R&B and Soul but also pop etc. You might say there is no R&B in Ray Agee but there certainly is no Northern Soul in it because as a musical genre it doesn't exist. It is a record that has a beat and tempo demanded by the dancers and DJ's on a small underground music scene although that has developed into something much wider over the years. The record was recorded by a R&B artist for the black music scene in the area it was recorded and if aimed at any chart it was the R&B Charts. As for Soultown adding Northern qualities, Soultown didn't have a clue about the Uk scene and when this record and many 100's like it at that time was recorded there was no Northern Soul not by that name anyway. It wasn't even recorded for the Uk dance scene but the local black market.

    I don"t disagree with anything you say Pete. My introduction was through what you describe, the classics, Motown etc. but it evolved to cover just about everything from the 60's to today. Like I said earlier we can argue all day long about the specifics and simply because it doesn't interest you what happened after any separation doesn't mean it should be dismissed as not Northern. The same arguments were being had wit the Wigan Mecca split and today the arguments are no different.

    Northern isn't a musical genre though. It is a scene made up of different musical genres. R&B is every bit Northern as the Wigan pop & Modern.

    Gritty = R&B?
  21. Chalky replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
    But Northern isn't a genre jet a term for a scene in the UK isn't it? We could argue all day about specifics but to me if it is played at a Northern Venue then it's Northern. No different to pop, soul and other genres of music being played at venues. Leaving aside the Northern thing, what genre would you class Irma?
