The Parisians / Traditions - Twinkle Little Star
Picture from Heey Baby Beach Days book, never seen the comp. I'll have a look out for it. I believe you btw, just quoting what Paul Trefzger said.

The Parisians / Traditions - Twinkle Little Star
I sent Paul a picture of the Pottsville Traditions and it was first time he had seen it, he said they looked familiar. It was he who said they could be the same as the Abet group but wasn't sure, I mentioned at the time they didn't sound the same. I'll dig the e-mails out when I get the chance.

So Who Was Soul Brother Number 1?
same can be said for many mentioned really, not many do have longevity and survive across the decades. Many survived maybe a decade and then resorted to oldies circuit, touring keeping their name up there.

So Who Was Soul Brother Number 1?
One of the most under-rated (IMO) and one I've been listening to a lot, Tommy Tate.

The Scene
fookin ell Moldie, it samples a 70's record and she was born in the 60's
-
The Scene
no one in particular and you are right I don't know every DJ but I know a lot of them.
-
The Scene
I simply used the "rare" tag to differentiate it from the more mainstream club soul. Maybe a more apt name can be dreamt up
-
The Scene
I would probably assume they would be 70's northern unless a recognised out and out modern soul DJ on the line up. People are free to listen to and go where they please, can't force anyone to go anywhere, but there is too much talk from many on here who profess to be supporters of more progressive music policies, from 60's through the decades who fail to follow up what they say.

The Scene
I don't claim to be anything....If I saw what you wrote or something similar on a flyer I would take it to be an oldies night, simple as that. The majority don't want across the board, 60's to the present day, that is a fact. Rare Soul is just that to me whatever the year.
-
The Scene
Can't we just call it a Rare Soul Scene with Rare Soul Nights/Nighters? Time the tags and genres were done away with, it just holds the scene back.
-
The Scene
What you said could just be describing 60's and 70's oldies.
-
The Scene
Will never work here, too much baggage and too much emphasis on venues of the past and too few people willing to show some tolerance and patience and open their ears to something new. Not everywhere in Europe is a mixture of genres but those that are don't have the history that holds back the UK Rare Soul Scene, it's simply soul music to them whatever genre and they couldn't care less where fit was first played. There was records played by Arthur last night that are massive in Europe, Butch said you can't get on the floor when they are played, here they clear the floor.

The Scene
Across The Board means from the 60's to present day whatever genre and not many venues cater for that...if any, that is a fact. Most that advertise ATB (especially soul nights) are oldies with a bit of Angie Stone or records that sound Northern thrown in and stray little from the well trodden path.

The Parisians / Traditions - Twinkle Little Star
Whatever the Parisians cost 20/25 or 30 years ago it now commands a big price. As for which is rarer, try finding either these days. Manship has the Parisians in his book at £700 and the Traditions at £450 I think. Are the Traditions the same group as on Barclay? The Parisians sound black to me, not that it matters....well to some it does. I was talking to Paul Trefzger of Saxony records who recorded The Traditions on Barclay who were definitely white and he thinks the Traditions on Abet were the same group although he wasn't sure. He found th e Traditions to record the song he had "Forever and Always". The conversations were about three years ago and came about because someone thought at the time the Ditalians and the Traditions were the same group and Paul said they were definitely not as the Ditalians were black, Bruce Tolbert was the lead of the Ditalians and 16 at the time, he died in the 70's. Some of the Ditalians went onto success with 24 Carat Black.

Are C.d's On The Way Out ?
But as I said paul we as consumers in the UK have consistently paid about a fiver more than other countries when it comes to buying an LP/CD.....rip off Britain again. You can in almost every instance buy any CD cheaper from a retailer in the states (and I don't mean amazon) and have it delivered to your door. It cost pennies (seem to remember a figure of 50 odd pence) to produce a CD, yet they ripped the UK consumer off with high prices compared to other countries. I don't think some think music is free, it is an unfortunate by product of the digital revolution. Because the record industry did all it could to stop digital and downloads people had to resort to other methods....file sharing via sites like audio galaxy and napster.....not condoning this either. They could get it for free and still do, you said it yourself its the attitude of those downloading. Like I said it is all their own fault, or many of the problems are of their own making. Record companies execs. bit like those running various sports, old and out of touch with the world and the youth.

Are C.d's On The Way Out ?
Maybe thats true Paul but you don't have the additional costs of art work and cases, shipping and distribution with downloads that you have with cds. The music simply sits on a server. Besides how much of that difference between a 12.99 cd and a 7.99 download album actually went to the artist? zero. And another fact is we in the UK have for years paid more than say america for our CDs, music etc. The internet has benefitted many artists, many who couldn't get a deal but sites like myspace and later FB got bands out there, got there music out there and some have made a tidy living out of the digital revolution. The record industry has only itself to blame really, whilst everyone else was embracing the internet, downloads etc, the industry was fighting it and doing everything it could to stop it. If it had been at the forefront of the digital and internet revolution maybe it wouldn't be in such a mess, maybe downloading music illegally wouldn't have been and still continues to be so prevalent. It's only the last tow or three years we have had a download chart yet kids have only really known downloads for years, most don't know what a record or record player looks like, many weren't even born when CD's came onto the market.

Would This Be Acceptable?
I often plug laptop into system, especially when doing sound files, podcasts etc and the tracks sound just as good as the records, in some cases the quality is better.
-
Would This Be Acceptable?
The silence is almost deafening from the collectors Ian. If some landlord asked me to do something like I described I would also do it. Obviously I wouldn't do it at a serious Soul Night/all-nighter but in a local club or pub where it isn't aimed purely at the soul crowd I don't see anything wrong with this sort of set up being talked about or even cds. I'd also agree with what others have said, it's not always about what you own it is how you put the set together as much as anything.
