I think a lot of the over inflated records are pricey due soley to either a lack of knowledge or more money than sense. Those about before the revival mid 90's knew you couldn't give Ace Spectrum away, christ it sold summat like 2 million in the states, it should be a two dollar record Same for the Constellations, Dottie and Millie etc, these were fillers in the 80's, in virtually every sales box every week Bill Bush, another from the late 80's getting re-activated over the last few years, folk just don't study whats going off on the auctions etc and are prepared to pay whatever it takes, their choice admittedly but foolish IMO. Don't think the likes of Ace Spectrum etc were deliberately pushed to inflate the prices, they are easy catchy dancers and you had a whole flock of lazy DJ's who weren't prepared to try something different as well as a less tolerable set of punters (all IMHO).

Waaaayyyyy too many Jerry I've always said tho' if I had to play a record to some one who asked "what is NS" it would be Timmie Williams - Competition - Mala or The Mello Souls - We Can Make It - Mello. Both have all the right ingredients for a Northern Soul record, even if they are out of reach for most of us.

Think it's Flo too Brett. Not Diana Ross. Flo did take the lead on the early stuff, I've this as a May '62 release (recorded Dec '61) and included on the LP Meet The Supremes Dec '62.

Spot on There is also vitually no need to buy blind, although can be good if you get a good 'un. Apart from the really rare and current sets from top DJ's most stuff is available in one format or other.

Best advice I can give If there's something you fancy and your not sure ask, no matter how trivial, plenty of help and advice on here and other sites. Other than that follow your heart as Bunny Siglerr Would Say. IMO there's a mountian of cheap quality collectabe soul out there, don't just look for the "next big thing" all the time. Ok buying big money records but todays cheapies are tomorrows hard to find expensive records Also IMO the current prices cannot be sustained forever, there's gonna be a crash one day. You only have to look round the record bars and you just don't see the youngsters buying records, mainly 30/35 plus. One day the "old uns" are gonna have to sell unless they are gonna take them with them

There's good and bad in all eras of the Northern Soul Scene, Wigan, Wheel, Stafford even today be it pop, soul or whatever description we care to give it. Like Andy says they represent a period in some ones life and when thrown in the mix they make up this wonderful scene of ours, good and bad. Something that is utter shite to one is absolutely brilliant to others.
