  1. Asked Richard Searling and Kev Roberts for both of these at Blackpool on Sunday night, neither had Game Players and Kev said he would play Jackie Moore but in the end didn't!!
  2. How about : - Both Ends Against The Middle - Jackie Moore and Game Players - Dooley Silverspoon
  3. I have been on this forum for only a few months now and it seems that it's cool to slag Wigan off as a dump (yes it was) a place that played 'pop' music and the uber cool would'nt be seen dead in the place, however like a number of responses to this topic I feel that you had to be there to 'get it' Yes there was some dodgy sounds played but come on the place was open for eight years and in that time more soul than 'pop' was played. I only ever attended the oldies nighters due to that fact that at 16/17 we were dependent on some older guys running the bus from County Durham and they liked the oldies. I remember when my mate attended for the first time and instead of going straight into the ballroom at dance floor level we took him up onto the balcony and his first 'sight of the grand old lady' was looking down onto an already full floor grooving to Williams & Watson - To Late the look of wonder on his face was fanastic, and whenever I hear that tune I always remember that moment! So in answer to the topic Citizen P;Other great sounds that I remember from Wigan;Just Brothers - Sliced Tomatoes (a torch sound but played at the oldies all nighters so I'm claiming it for Wigan!), Little Anthony - Better Use your Head, The Demures - Raining Teardrops, Willie Mitchell - The Champion, Joe Hicks - Don't it make you feel funky, Mike Post - Afternoon of the Rhino, The Jades - I where it's at and Dooley Silverspoon - Game players.
  4. With the recent topics relating to pop records and Peggy March etc, I want to ask the question 'What is Soul'? I don't mean Northern especially but soul as a music genre. Let's remember that the massive rare soul sounds we love were released in order for the artist to 'break' the pop charts and make some wonga for said artist(s) I originally felt that soul music had to be sung by Black Americans but when you hear Micheal Macdonald, Dean Parrish etc that view becomes flawed!
  5. With the topic currently running regarding Mr M's top tunes got me thinking about the role Mr M's played in the birth of the revial scene. My visits to the Casino were limited to oldies nights due to being 16 and the only way of getting from our part of Co Durham to Wigan was by a coach organised by an old geezer of maybe 25 or 26! who disliked the music such Love Hustle being played on Saturday nights Oldies it was! But as M's was an oldies overflow from day one and judging by the replies to the earlier post perhaps our love of oldies began years before the birth of the weekenders
  6. Didn't go in much as it was the oldies nighters we went to (geezer who ran the bus didn't like Saturday's back then Love Hustle/Joe 90 etc was his reason) but would have a look for half an hour or so, Joe Hicks Don't it make you feel funky always seemed to be on when you walked in!
  7. Think I have this album, can't remember where it came from but I had to send away for it and it came with just the white inner sleave. Still got it! Album that I played repeatedly was probably Solid Soul Sensations on Pye, this got me hooked on Northern (along with Great Disco Demands) still have both of these also!
  8. Don't know if anyone can draw a line, its all subjective isn't it? Stuff like Muriel Day, Val Mckenna, Johnny Vanelli etc are pop records which were recorded as such but picked up by the scene as they had the right tempo and feel. They were loved by many at the time but as the years go by I think we become more selective on what's soul and what's not. Having said that always loved Beverly Ann which is c&w/pop/soul!!!
  9. We had Long after tonight is all over at our's.
  10. yes I heard that too (yes it's sad!) but think it might have been Gabriella Cilmi's version?
  11. I take your point on board reference the two styles of dancing and maybe the people you talk about are possibly partners of soulies who have never been into the music before and yes maybe they should try and learn the basics! Last comment on warm up area was a joke!
  12. Hi Zed1 I wasn't shouting mate I was trying to distinguish your writing and mine! I'm still getting used to this quote reply malarkey!! and no Pogoing and spitting would be wrong, I hear what you're saying but surely a scene that has been around since the 1960's has a number of dancing styles which means different styles for different people, perhaps all venues should have a warm up/dance lesson area!!!
  13. MOST OF THE BAR STAFF AND GLASS COLLECTORS I'VE SEEN ARE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARN'T INTERESTED IN SERVING YOU LET ALONE WATCH YOU DANCE! COME ON LIGHTEN UP IF PEOPLE ARE NOT GOOD DANCERS SO WHAT AS LONG AS THEY ENJOY THE MUSIC AND CAUSE NO TROUBLE WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
  14. Val Mckenna - Love Feeling, loved it years ago but listened to it recently and thought pop record that fitted in with the 'Wigan Sound'
  15. Beverly Ann - You've got you're mind on other things. C&W meets NS. Still love the track though!
  16. Just go for it, when you're out look around at the dancers you will see some great dancers who seem to glide across the floor and you think bugger that I can't do that but then look again for every great dancer there's three people doing their own thing maybe not in time with the music but boy are they loving it! and certainly not bothered who knows it!!! When I first started going out last year after an absence of 30 years within 2 records I was on the floor near the edge but as the night went on got further in and even started spinning!!! So just go for it, and remember no one is looking at you people are just looking ahead listening to the music
  17. You sound like my missus!! She's only got into the music since attending Scarborough last year (although she'd listened to and like some of my records) we now attend local soul nights and prior to going out she has a bit practice in the house and does dance when we go out but she's constantly asking 'did I look ok'? or 'am I doing it right'? The answer is always yes!! because there's no right or wrong way, just let the music take over and enjoy!!
  18. I know some people can't dance have no rhythm but love to dance, so just let them dance. It's not a dance competition but a scene that lends itself to dance!
  19. Andyj replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
Always said that I want Jimmy Radcliffe to be played at my funeral, (played this at our wedding as the first dance track!) just love the track, don't know about the other two I would pick, probably Timi Yuro as it's just one of my all time favorites and I think that Prokofiev's 'Dance of the Knights' (which some will know as the theme from The Apprentice, but it's also the music played just before Sunderland walk out onto the pitch!)will be played as my coffin is carried into the Chapel.
  20. Youth club years 1976ish to 1978ish! First visited Wigan 1978
  21. At youth clubs round here in the late seventies we relied on us bringing records in for the DJ to play! So some of the older kids got us hooked on tunes such as - I'm so Glad - The Fuzz Love Feeling - Val McKenna Out on the floor - Dobie Gray Seven Days is too long - Chuck Wood Dance Dance Dance - The Casuleers Some DJ's would then play The Snake, Footsie and Wigans Ovations in the belief that they were up with this crazy Northern Soul thing!! (although The Snake wasn't hated back then!)
  22. 1. Night Owl 2. Don't let it slip away 3. Born a Loser There are loads I don't like but hate is a very strong word! Love Millie Jackson great voice how can anyone dislike House for Sale?
  23. Don't hate it but don't love it either. I think it's because it's associated with the scene by people outside the scene that make us think it's a div record but without it many of us would be rocking to Status Quo!!!!!
