Pre order dropped this morning, with another version of Find Myself Another Man on the b side, this time a tad more of an rnb feel to it

I gave up after about 15 mins, as above not what I expected. As for things being a bit off I tend to think the writers of some dramas take a particular political stance and often ignore a more balanced view of events.
  3. Welcome to you both, wishing you the best on your soul source journey, the breadth of knowledge across all genres of soul from not just the music but encompassing past events, venues and people etc is truly mind boggling at times, enjoy.

New series of Astrid in Paris this week, enjoyed previous ones it's been interesting watching Astrid's character develop.
  5. I was thinking along those lines but I am just as happy the way it is now. I think for a separate thread of just current artists to work it would need far greater input from members posting releases they are aware of, in that I'm as guilty as anyone for not contributing. Unless you buy current I'm guessing many would be amazed at the volume of releases that are out there. I wasn't aware of Olivia Dean, just checked her out on youtube , lovely voice, nice tunes but not something I would buy or listen to at home but thank you for the heads up.
  6. I've bought quite a few of the releases on the thread and find it a valuable resource as I don't do facebook or any other soul related sites. I tend to up vote if I like a release and intend to buy, I don't feel the need to comment further though I hadn't considered by commenting it offers validation of the release to the label owner. I doubt people don't comment to keep the release under the radar as it's out there for all to see once posted. I think when hearing a release you either like it or don't and no amount of positive comments would change my opinion. The only result of a quantity of positive comments on limited releases to my mind would be and I'm speculating here people buying to sell on for a profit thus genuine buyers hearing it later missing out should it sell out.

He does, Into the Congo, enjoying it, sad for the Debmeli that logging will soon swallow their part of the forest. He does seem to have empathy with the people he meets.
  8. Good choice Rob, my favourite by them is the ballad I Know better which gets to me every time
  9. Sorry for the long winded answer Peter but you did ask and offer a dither option. After much head scratching my brain feels like it's full of popping candy with names jumping in and out of the ether. If you had asked that question when I first started on my lifelong soul journey it would have been a lot easier to answer, no thought would have been needed, Otis Redding, Gladys Knight and for the group The Temptations with a nod to Sam and Dave (artist, artists not quite a group ) Time moves on and though I still love all the aforementioned such is the diversity of my taste across the spectrum of soul music I've given it some thought and can't come up with a favourite. Using the number of records in my collection by a particular artist wouldn't make them a favourite. I've probably got more records by the Supremes than anyone else but they wouldn't come close to the top. Some great choices already mentioned, both Womack and Taylor would be there about's, could I choose between two Betty's(e) , Lavette and Everett, could Kool and the Gang triumph over the Ohio Players, Marvin,Curtis, Johnny Nash, Joe Simon, whose music could I not bear to never hear again.......Peter you're a bad man 🙂, don't even think of revisiting a fav record thread 😂 . First record I heard by Otis, Shake, hooked after that, first became aware of Womack with the Valentinos but it was Harry Hippie /I Can Understand It that had me buying all his 70's early eighties albums, Gladys would be Just Walk in My Shoes church hall disco, only artist I've got close enough to to ask for an autograph shaking like a leaf (me not Gladys). Cheers Peter thinking about this brought back some happy memories if no specific answer.

My thoughts at the end where once you've gone down that road that no matter what happens politicaly in the future there would be no going back. That was a frightening statistic, 400 million more cameras in three years.

Total Trust on iplayer, truly frightening documentary on how China uses and continues to increase its use of technology to monitor and control its people. CCTV taken to the extreme. I was left with mixed feelings about the civic pride aspect of the programme, it's one thing to monitor litter, parking etc but when again taken to the extreme it was rather worrying. I know a few people who would only be too happy to take on the power some of the people in the programme had in watching and reporting on their neighbours.

Not expecting this to go far as a new topic but this amused me this morning, looking through record sales on here one seller used the often used description "under the radar". Following his youtube link as happens these days up came an advert before the record that made me smile for a "radar blocker". Maybe one for the dj wishing to keep his under the radar set that way 🤔.

I enjoyed it ,rumoured for ages to be a second series in the offing but it has yet to materialise and doubt it ever will
  14. Welcome Sophie, enjoy

We don't get out to events so much these days but I don't see anything wrong with couples dancing together if it is in a style appropriate to the music which can be done to great effect. "ballroom style" does not sound like a good watch, did they dance conventionally the rest of the night? Then again I've looked at people dancing on their own and thought as you say WTF. Each to their own, years ago at an event we regularly attended a woman used to move very slowly in her own body space no matter what the tempo of the tune, obviously fully immersed in the music, I loved watching her, others thought otherwise. Having initially said I see nothing wrong with it I wouldn't like to see it become the norm, watching others dance has always added to the enjoyment of a night regardless of the artistry involved.

I've only watched a couple of African films, very early in my world cinema journey I watched the brilliant The Gods Must be Crazy, the sequel which I can't remember the name of not quite as good, enjoyed Tsotsi.

Me too, My interest in World Cinema began purely by chance in the 80's coming home late one night and catching the French film Diva on the BBC, hooked from the start by the moody opening scenes and soundtrack. The above mentioned John De Floret cemented my passion. A couple I'd recommend which I've mentioned previously would be the comedy La Famille Belier and the above mentioned Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu together in 36.

Watched Scrublands yesterday, only four episodes, Australian drama about a journalist doing a follow up story in a small outback town ,won't say anymore but really enjoyed it.
  20. Thanks for the recommendation, just finished the book, I enjoyed it though I did find small sections of it a bit deep intellectually . Never the less a fascinating read, I enjoyed looking up the tunes mentioned intending to work my way slowly over time through the discography listed at the end of the book. It also reminded me of when I was around fourteen I bought a wind up gramaphone from a school fair ,my mate then got one from his Grandad and four or five of us for a few months used to meet up playing all sorts of weird stuff we'd found in second hand shops until the novelty wore off and soul music took over. Funny how memory works, I just remembered the other attraction of going to his house, his mum was pretty fit in a Bridgette Bardot kind of way and no husband on the scene, oh the fantasies the rest of us dreamt up. He wouldn't have been happy 😇

Finished watching Fool Me Once on Netflix at the weekend , it was ok , too many "would you do that moments" for me. At one point before the detective descends the cellar steps I found myself shouting at the Tv "the fffing light switch is right in front of you" but no, as usual in these things out comes what appears to be the Tv detectives essential piece of kit the torch.
  22. Ooops, when I posted I thought it didn't seem right and I've been listening to it for over 50 yrs.Even remember buying it from Ralph's in Manchester, thanks gents, old age is definitely getting the best of me 😩
  23. The start of Brooks and Jerry always makes me smile, "part one, and part two if we have time"
  24. Rarely of late have I not finished a book but after struggling through 250 pages of David Mitchel's Cloud Atlas I cannot summon the will to read another 250 pages. No question it is a very cleverly written book, the way he switches the way the characters speak must have taken him an age to write yet I have found it a very hard read. I'm sure at some point it would all come together as various threads crop up in later chapters but my head is spinning. Maybe it's a step up beyond my intellectual level I don't know. I never like to leave a book unfinished but sadly there are large parts of this one where I just haven't enjoyed the reading experience. Has anyone had a similar feeling over a book you haven't finished for one reason or another?
  25. Looking for something lightweight the other night myself and Lou watched Our Souls In the Night starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Beautifully acted a story to warm the heart, just a nice story that as we get older we can all possibly relate to, reminded me in some ways of On golden Pond.
