I enjoyed it ,rumoured for ages to be a second series in the offing but it has yet to materialise and doubt it ever will
  2. We don't get out to events so much these days but I don't see anything wrong with couples dancing together if it is in a style appropriate to the music which can be done to great effect. "ballroom style" does not sound like a good watch, did they dance conventionally the rest of the night? Then again I've looked at people dancing on their own and thought as you say WTF. Each to their own, years ago at an event we regularly attended a woman used to move very slowly in her own body space no matter what the tempo of the tune, obviously fully immersed in the music, I loved watching her, others thought otherwise. Having initially said I see nothing wrong with it I wouldn't like to see it become the norm, watching others dance has always added to the enjoyment of a night regardless of the artistry involved.

I've only watched a couple of African films, very early in my world cinema journey I watched the brilliant The Gods Must be Crazy, the sequel which I can't remember the name of not quite as good, enjoyed Tsotsi.

Me too, My interest in World Cinema began purely by chance in the 80's coming home late one night and catching the French film Diva on the BBC, hooked from the start by the moody opening scenes and soundtrack. The above mentioned John De Floret cemented my passion. A couple I'd recommend which I've mentioned previously would be the comedy La Famille Belier and the above mentioned Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu together in 36.

Watched Scrublands yesterday, only four episodes, Australian drama about a journalist doing a follow up story in a small outback town ,won't say anymore but really enjoyed it.
  7. Thanks for the recommendation, just finished the book, I enjoyed it though I did find small sections of it a bit deep intellectually . Never the less a fascinating read, I enjoyed looking up the tunes mentioned intending to work my way slowly over time through the discography listed at the end of the book. It also reminded me of when I was around fourteen I bought a wind up gramaphone from a school fair ,my mate then got one from his Grandad and four or five of us for a few months used to meet up playing all sorts of weird stuff we'd found in second hand shops until the novelty wore off and soul music took over. Funny how memory works, I just remembered the other attraction of going to his house, his mum was pretty fit in a Bridgette Bardot kind of way and no husband on the scene, oh the fantasies the rest of us dreamt up. He wouldn't have been happy 😇

Finished watching Fool Me Once on Netflix at the weekend , it was ok , too many "would you do that moments" for me. At one point before the detective descends the cellar steps I found myself shouting at the Tv "the fffing light switch is right in front of you" but no, as usual in these things out comes what appears to be the Tv detectives essential piece of kit the torch.
  9. Ooops, when I posted I thought it didn't seem right and I've been listening to it for over 50 yrs.Even remember buying it from Ralph's in Manchester, thanks gents, old age is definitely getting the best of me 😩
  10. The start of Brooks and Jerry always makes me smile, "part one, and part two if we have time"
  11. Rarely of late have I not finished a book but after struggling through 250 pages of David Mitchel's Cloud Atlas I cannot summon the will to read another 250 pages. No question it is a very cleverly written book, the way he switches the way the characters speak must have taken him an age to write yet I have found it a very hard read. I'm sure at some point it would all come together as various threads crop up in later chapters but my head is spinning. Maybe it's a step up beyond my intellectual level I don't know. I never like to leave a book unfinished but sadly there are large parts of this one where I just haven't enjoyed the reading experience. Has anyone had a similar feeling over a book you haven't finished for one reason or another?
  12. Looking for something lightweight the other night myself and Lou watched Our Souls In the Night starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Beautifully acted a story to warm the heart, just a nice story that as we get older we can all possibly relate to, reminded me in some ways of On golden Pond.
  13. If no one comes up with an answer I'll check mine when I get home tomorrow, don't recall it being 5 mins, discogs time at 2 mins could be correct.
  14. That's a great channel Mike, cheers, going to enjoy expanding my musical mind on that one 👍
  15. There's been some great releases this year, hard to keep up at times if like me you rely on this site and notifications from various on line retailers and one mate who buys new releases, I don't do Faceache. Just bought one of the tunes mentioned above and tempted by a couple of others. One I've enjoyed this year. Cheers Mike, timely thread, keep up the good work best to you and the team.
  16. Cheers for that one , I looked at the reviews and put it on my to get list.
  17. Got a copy on the way, looking forward to reading 👍
  18. Moving into summer I've been putting Marmalade in fried onions for the barbecue for years so i can well see it working with a bacon butty

It was, along with the no comment the way they let them go into the interviews with blankets wrapped around them, feign falling asleep, deny that the person shown to them on video is clearly them shows the level of society they have to deal with. The one the other week where the mother had driven the murderers to the scene and back and denied knowing her own son was unbelievable, her a social worker too. I looked into the reasons behind the "no comment" interview and although I now understand why it is used the amount of police time it wastes when the evidence is there of their guilt should be reflected in the sentence when found guilty. If criminals knew they would get say an extra six months on their sentence after giving a no comment maybe they would think twice. I realise the law is far more complex than we as laymen possibly understand but watching programmes like 24 Hours gives me the impression that often criminals have too many rights and the sentence doesn't always fit the crime.
  20. Something a bit more recent Oliver James One and Only / But For the Love
  21. Nice, new to me, second time in two days on this thread that someones posted a different version of a Jr Walker track which made me think how easy we forget the obvious ones as no one though i could have missed it posted Jr's What Does it Take on the best intro thread. Take Me has been a long time favourite of mine, nice raspy vocal on this version. Everytime I play Take Me I wish Jr's sax playing went on a little longer before the girls start singing, that Sax hits me right to the pit of my stomach.
  22. Flicked through haven't seen this mentioned though I might have missed it, maybe not the best but two good sides, recent purchase from Dave Pinch on here, The Sensations Gotta Find Myself Another Girl/ Lonely World
  23. Run Away was one of the first records I bought when I started buying again Mal, my joy was unbridled when I flipped it, not sure which i now prefer. I nearly posted it some time ago when someone was asking for Latin type recommendations as I think it has that Latin vibe. I doubt you will be disappointed.
