Thanks for that, I'd forgotten all about the Commodores and echo your sentiments re Lionel Ritchie. There were several concerts i went to that i didn't keep the tickets for some reason. I saw Rose Royce at the Apollo, this was at the time of Love Don't live here Anymore, I can't remember whether they were headliners or support for someone else, I do remember the lights being low and a glitter ball sending star like reflections round the theatre to the opening notes of Love Don't, very atmospheric for the start of their set, I could be wrong but I think she sang the first few bars before the lights came up, haunting stuff. I'll check my programmes again, I don't recall seeing her mentioned or seeing her on any of the shows I went to but that's not to say she didn't. I think you do tend to forget the support acts sometimes as with your mention of the Tymes supporting the Tops.

Sorry to disappoint you, Phillip Mitchell replaced Al Green at the New century Hall and wasn't on the original line up, I don't recall them repeating the concert at a later date as I'm sure I would have gone. Al Green had flu or something and didn't appear until later dates of the tour, if you look at the photos of my tickets you'll see Al Green's name crossed out and Phillip Mitchel's written in pen. Phillip Mitchell was brilliant, saw him again maybe the year after supporting Wilson Picket in a club in Liverpool which surprisingly to us and Wilson was very poorly attended. Al Green did appear in 1973 at the Hardrock in Manchester so it looks like you attended both and maybe mixed up the memories.

AI re-writing the History of Northern Soul
Re visiting this thread after this morning looking for some info for the Manchester concerts thread regarding Kool and the Gangs playing there and due to crowd trouble and having instruments stolen soul acts were subsequently banned for several years. I was surprised to see the first mention was actually my comment on here from a few years ago in a thread about best live acts seen. Searching further as is normal these days it first gave an AI overview which was clearly lifted from my post on here. I know what I wrote to be true as confirmed when discussing the thread with a mate who was there with him bringing it up first. My point being it could quite easily have been a false memory made fact by AI. Further to that searching for Kool and the Gang Free Trade hall AI came up with the startling fact that they had never appeared there, clearly not true as i have the ticket evidenced by the photo on the concert thread.

I think you are right. Until I looked through the programmes I would have thought Brass Consteuction and the Spinners were two operate gigs. Did you go to Kool and The Gang at the Free trade Hall, this was at the time of the Wild and Peaceful album before they went all disco, Joanna etc. Ended in chaos when half of Manchester climbed onto the stage they had some instruments stolen. The Free Trade Hall banned soul acts from performing there for a couple of years after that again if my memory serves me right. One gig I didn't attend and I still regret it to this day. Al Green at the Basement club in little old Bury, this would be 71'ish

Not only yours, I had no recollection of seeing them either. I'd not looked at the programmes for a long time, no mention of Jimmy Helms in the Dionne Warwicke programme, it says Joey Loren, blurb says he was the first american to be signed directly to a British label Pye. Programme also has Kenny Bernard as appearing. I don't remember either but it was common then for different support acts on different nights so your memory could well be correct.

I had one record out of stock out of three and had refund on postage. This was off the website so maybe there's a disconnect with the two teams sorting the orders

Belle Vue, those wooden benches we couldn't have been sat any further back, have a vague memory of being cold there too, amazed at women screaming at the sound or just Barry's voice during Walking in the rain, seem to recall the concert was well constructed with the orchestra doing their bit the the ladies leading on to Big bazza himself. Diana Ross for me wasn't "oh I must see her" more didn't want to miss the chance of seeing her, i was surprised how much I enjoyed the gig. On the getting autographs after the Gladys knight finished my mate who was black (can I say that) and had an afro said we are going to the stage door for autographs, When I got there he had disappeared, there were probably about twenty in the queue and we were told Miss Knight will see you five at a time. I could have dropped to the floor when my turn came, my mate was stood there with the group and whether true or not he never changed his story he claimed he even signed a few programmes. Did you see Jimmy Ruffin in either Oldham or Rochdale in a club I can't remember the name of ? Long walk home where we hitched a lift from a bloke in a very small van, only room for one in the front, the rest of us climbed in the back, we'd only gone a mile when there was a furious banging on the back panel ,van skidded to a halt, back doors flew open and my mate screamed get out get out, the bloke had tried to touch him up

I remember that one, lady comedian was very good, don't recall Jimmy Helms , I recall her coming on with a walking stick but though she had had an accident, I don't recall it being a charity event though. these are great memories. We were lucky in that period 71 to 80 to have the chance to see so many major soul acts across all genres in Manchester. One of my memories is deciding at the last minute to go to the first night of the Warner Brothers music tour that was spread over two nights. We had tickets for the second night with the Doobie Brothers and Graham Central Station deciding at 5 o'clock on the night I couldn't miss the chance to see Tower of Power, we were just about to go to the ticket office when a bloke asked did we have tickets.thinking he was a tout we said no, he promptly gave us two tickets, five rows back courtesy of Warner Brothers. I made someone else's night as a guy asked had we any spare tickets ,luckily the Warner brothers chap was still about so i directed him there, he ended up sat behind us. Tower of Power were brilliant, at one point the brass players coming of the stage dancing up and down the aisle still playing, just fabulous.

I saw them twice, first time they were brilliant, second time possibly the one you saw, i only went due to my cousin liking them,by then they were singing Rock and Roll Baby and the like. I wasn't impressed. My memory of the Denice Williams was Lenny Williams supporting her ,only went to see him, a few stood up applauding after he sang So Very Hard To Go and got confused looks from the Deniece Williams fans, I thought she was crap. he was brilliant, from memory sang nearly all the songs from his first solo album. I seem to remember Gwen was supposed to be on the George McCrae bill but had a cold and didnt appear, were KC and the Sunshine band also support?

I have all my old tickets in a frame, very faded now . I wish I had been more careful writing the acts on the Opera House and Palace tickets. I have the Detroit Spinners on the Atlantic Road Show with hosted by Emperor Roskoe with support from Jimmy Castor and I think Sister Sledge at the Opera House Sunday April the 6th. Then again with Brass Construction as support Saturday 30th April 1977 at I think the Palace, only half a ticket. I have a Four Tops ticket for the Opera House with the support act written in biro, unfortunately can't make out the name, starts with an S maybe second letter P so could be the one you are talking about. Marvin Gaye, I've got one from the ABC at Ardwick,no date and no indication of support. Gladys Knight, Odeon theatre, November the third, what a night that was,got hers and the Pips autographs after the show in the program which I stupidly gave away about five years ago. I'll try and take some pics, might jog a few more memories of shows you hacmve forgotten about,I didnt realise I'd seen Herbie Hancock until I took the board out of the frame.

Manship half price sale
As i said in my post just after yours the record I hopefully bought last night newly listed is no longer there this morning. who is responsible for removing items once sold I have no idea, perhaps someone on here can tell us, is it automatic from Discogs side or does the seller have to do it. I'm sure this was answered on the last sale thread but i cannot remember the answer.
