  1. Thanks Jase. Your memory is much better than mine & I thank you for the detail. I went to the rock pile a few times & the Mayfair suite - although we definitely called it’ the ice rink’ to be fair, probably a throw back to school trips to go skating! To be fair, I’m not knocking either Eve or Levanna personally or the events /clientele they attract - as a promoter I know very well that it’s easy to snipe from an armchair than actually lay down cash & put events on. Mike Shawe I know from BR - he’s still running events on the modern side too I believe. Nice bloke. Perhaps the statement that seems to have gotten everyone talking was edited? i can’t think why otherwise such a seemingly definitive statement about ‘nothing being on in Bristol in the past etc’ was made, if you weren’t actually there at the time?
  2. Eve A is 'Levannas' mum & co hosts the Bristol NSC events. AFAIAA she was connected with Stafford 'Top of the world', at some point -just what I've heard anyway. The Edwin Starr story aside, it simply isn't credible to say Bristol was a NS black hole before the millennium - nothing about Yate, the ice rink all-nighters or even little events of which there were loads on a regular basis in the city throughout the 80's with a few even popping up since -including some which ran for years & were pretty well attended - stuff like go-go children allnighters etc. It's pretty ironic to have such a seeming poor memory really, as she had 3 Bristol NS DJs at her own gig last weekend, at least 1 of who has been on the local scene for decades. Oops.

  7. Indeed, I recognise a few real mods I know well within it.
  8. Another nail in the coffin perhaps , but, if it's any consolation - the real mod scene still survives in one form or another despite decades of being pastiched, insulted & misrepresented. The only concern to me is those who are easily persuaded that an image shown on TV (or even worse social media) is genuine and start popping up at proper events only to be disappointed (or even worse trying to change what we have into what they think it should be!)
  9. I feel as much genuine sorrow for those conned by this nonsense. If you have to buttonhole it, categorise it and especially if you have to sanitise it & water it down then it ain't Northern soul.
  10. TBF I didn't say I had one. I have an original FWIW.
  11. Timbo58 commented on S callon's event in Alldayers

Absolutely cracking alldayer, best we've been to in decades! Do yourself a favour -this is truly worth the trip -however far to whack in your diary.
  12. Really high quality event from start to finish. Highly recommended and a really excellent across the board (not just in name but in delivery too!) rare & northern soul. Hats off to Ruth for the hard work that's gone into this. A 2 hours drive each way for us -but we'll be back -for definite!
  13. None bad -to be fair I really didn't do many after the 80's anyway. One very memorable one that still scares the heck out of me was NYE Stoke. Felt fine until I got back to my mates (who was giving me a lift the 4 hours south) and realised when I got in my car I felt a bit odd (i.e. whoozy/pissed). It certainly wasn't the booze as after the pre drinks in 'spoons I'd stuck to red bull and only had a few of them & water until the last song and farewells. I managed to get to my home in one piece, felt a bit odd/slightly sick all day, so having a shift the next day (Railway) I tried to sleep it off. Lo & behold I got half way to work and realised I'd better ring in 'sick' as I still felt pissed (Rail limit was instant sack at 1/2 the DD limit)! This was at least 18 hours after the event and over 24 since my last alcoholic drink so there is no way I'd have been OTT. Spiked drink? I bloody well think so. No wonder the kids hang onto theirs for grim death nowadays,
  14. Yup, the Suncut one released in 2018 is a legit re-issue.
  15. intercity soul club was Yate. I bumped into a chap from Cambridgeshire up in Blackburn (selling patches funnily enough) recently who showed me photos of his personal very large patch collection from back in the day. He had several ICSC ones which I had never seen before.
  16. The first time I saw these sorts of 'dance offs' we were all much younger & it was all regarded as a bit of fun, nothing more. Unfortunately some people/promotors/ & yes -organisations making a few quid off the scene yet again, are making & taking it all far too seriously nowadays. Not being much of a dancer myself I really appreciate seeing someone who can dance well, fluidly and perhaps throw in the odd trick in the right place of a song -it shows a depth of knowledge in the tune which I can respect as much as technical prowess. In saying that I've seen people who no one would ever call a 'great dancer' on the floor immersed in a song with such emotion in their faces, close to tears sometimes - now they truly would win any competition hands down -no argument if I was judging it!

  18. Pretty lazy article really. Not very well researched -and it shows. If it was about the youth 'spin off' of NS then it didn't mention anyone outside of London, if it was London-centric but 'all ages' it missed out at least one major long running club and if was supposed to be country wide 'any ages' it missed dozens of easily found venues. It's laughable to pronounce anything connected with NS can not be retro -it's a scene largely built on releases 1965-1975 ffs. Like most other NS media stories -it had a tiny crumb of accuracy wrapped up in two tons of shite.
  19. Exactly what I thought too. I'm pleased he was given some sort of comeuppance, but as you say he could still be 'trading' had he been sensible, since he knew the records were dodgy from the outset. I'm actually disappointed that he was only fined about 1/3rd of what he took people for and would guess that's pretty much his profit margin, so all that would say to me if I were that way inclined is: even if I get caught I'll end up with a slap on the wrist, 4 months suspended is hardly a disincentive either for a scam that can clearly net millions if carried out sensibly.
  20. Now I remember: Walls club Gloucester alldayers allow overnight camping too. I think also Lawns Club Taunton allows it (but it'd be best to contact the organisers Drew & Trevor 1st as the car park there for the club is very small.
  21. West Wilts soul club (Trowbridge, Wiltshire) has a large secure carpark which is camper van friendly -in the warmer months we have quite a few overnighters in camper vans.
  22. https://gofund.me/7b60ace8 Mick H has set up a crowdfund to raise £10k as a reward for successful retrieval of the discs. Great idea Mick.
  23. Absolute scum. Stolen after the NOTTINGHAM Alldayer (Rose & Crown) Yesterday Sunday 26th February. Photo (colourised by Tom Romark & from Teds own doorbell camera) attached of one of the suspects. Obviously anyone with any suspicion who this person might be should contact the rozzers or Ted.
