Go Ahead.....Richard Searling's New Label
Cheers for that Chalky, I know Richards stuff is legal. I was replying to the other post about the artists, if they don't own the rights to the songs, it is unlikely they would be paid, but the publishing company or writers will be. Dave

Depends if they own the rights to the songs. I understand Richards stuff is all correctly published and who ever is getting paid.

Another Nail In The Vinyl Coffin
Hi Carl I'm with you, we pressed 500 copies of The Rotations last year and all but sold out in a month. Our next release 'Todays Soulful Sound Of Detroit' LP, out in february, will also be on vinyl, Archers in Detroit are currently doing the test pressings for me now. Long live this archaic format, 'Can't beat the thrill of holding a new buy in your hands' or digging through a basement of records looking for that elusive record.

Sad News Dave McCadden RIP
Sad news indeed, my thoughts are with his family. His fanzine was one of the first I read when I was a young buck. Later I got to know him through people like Guy Hennigan on my early visits to Wigan, such a great guy. Dave

Weldon Arthur McDougal III RIP
Somewhere on Soulful Detroit, there is a link to a good radio interview he did in the U.S. within the last year or so. Sad loss a east coast powerhouse, original member The Larks where he sang bass. Weldon went on to be an east coast promotions manager with Motown, along with being part owner of Harthon records. He gave Barbara Mason her first break, asking her to join the group on stage to sing one night at a local club where she sang moon river, she got a standing ovation. He then arranged for her to cut her first record at Arctic. Later working with Kenny Gamble he had no small hand in helping develope Philadelphia International. He was a great showman, writer, producer alround talented guy and one of the people that founded what was to become The Philly Sound.

His music must have rung out at every youth club in the country in the early 70's and brought happiness to many.

General Johnson Rip
Sad new indeed, spoke to last year about coming over to do a show, as someone was interested in having him over for a weekender. He was in high spirits at the time and really up for coming over. He had been in conversation with McKinley Jackson in Detroit about cutting some new tracks as well, all in all sad news. Dave

News: The Holidays and Debonaires by Rob Moss
Hi Rob Nice read. I see Jimmy Holland just about every time I'm in Detroit, he would love to bring the Holidays over to the UK, but every time I've mentioned it to anyone here no one has shown any interest, shame really. Dave

News: The Tempos Story by Rob Moss
Hi Rob Nice job mate, great info and cool you share it with all. Just a note Buford 'Fab' Glanton, went on to record as David Lenyard and was also a member of Four Real Inc. all of which came out on Flying Eagle. He still lives in Detroit to this day, but has suffered from poor health for many years.

Sad News Richard Popcorn Wylie RIP
Also the rights to his stuff is spread around over a fair few companies and pulling it all together, sadly isn't that easy. Richard held the rights to most of his own lables, but some where sold last year. His ABC stuff is held by MCA, a far bit is help by Ollie McLauglin publishing and then you have all the shared credits, like Ric-Tic etc which is all over the place. Dave

Sad News Richard Popcorn Wylie RIP
Reading these post marks out several things. One, what an important figure he was to the UK soul scene over so many years. Secondly, that he was such a nice guy, personnally know to many and that he touched so many people as a person. Lastly, how the world has shrunk, in many ways our scene and the people that made the music have become one. News, good or bad travels around the world in a matter of hours. He loved the UK soul scene, would always ask about many people in the UK and tell me to send on his reguards to them, every time we spoke. In reverse I would often be asked by people here to take something over for him or get a record signed. Last time I traveled there, Gilly asked if I would take over a bottle of his favorite hooch for him, this just made Richard's week. We spoke about the UK, he knew then he would never be well enough to return, but still longed to be back here to see old friends and entertain the people that kept his music alive. His happy smiling face was always a joy to see and his hospitality fantastic, "have a look in that cupboard dave, I think there maybe some records there", "Go have a look in the basement and see what you can find". There are so many stories to tell about this man, but here is just one he told me. When John Anderson, first went round his house and pulled out a bunch of records, richard said "How much are you going to give me for them". When John told him that he would give him $$$$, richard said "Your kidding, right. I've been giving them to my kids so they can play frisbee out in the streets with them" So although many have written about the joy he gave to them here, for this man at least the thanks was returned. Keep on putting up your comments and thoughts and I will let the family see them.

News: The Greatest Record Finds Of All Time 2008
There used to be a Sally Army shop about a mile away, only a few 45's but had loads of LP's and multiples out the back. Got 10 copies of the Spyder Turner Lp, and 10 of the Kim Weston with 'Easy Street' and a couple of Mary Saxton. But that was then, probably not even there now. Also walked into Blue Note just a few days after it open, boy I did well, 45's & 12"'

News: The Greatest Record Finds Of All Time 2008
Not a vast find, but still nice. In the early 80's was in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on holiday. Had a day spare so thought I'd pop over to Sid Arthur's Oldies (Later King Arthurs). Spent the day going through boxes and did fairly well. Now at this time, early Stafford, Richard had been playing Willie Tee-Please don't go, think Ian had a copy, but not many had turned up. Was just about to leave and thought I just look through the alphabetical section on the side wall. The store was know well so hadn't look before, went to the Willie Tee tab and there were 3 copies. Couldn't believe my luck.

Yate Re-Union Saturday 01 December - Info And History
Information, history and more on the upcoming Yate re-union Yate The Re-Union Saturday 01 December Berkeley It been a few years coming, but finally Dave Thorley has found a venue to put on the first full Yate re-union. To be held on Saturday 1st, Dec. Dave says the venue Berkeley Power Station, Social Club, looks scarily like the old Stars and Strips, Sterling Suite. He has got together a full line up of original dj's, who promise to play authentic sets. With a line of Dave himself, Dave Greet, Ady Pountain, Hippo, Richard Marsh and Tony Ellis the whole spectrum of tunes from the club will be played. From the early days under John Kojak's Inter-City banner, through the Southern Soul Club promotions right up until it closed some 5 years later under the South West Soul Club. The venue is situated on the banks of the river Severn, justs from the original location. Feed back todate has been fantastic so expect a packer, with many old faces venturing out for the first time in years, some making the trip from as far away as Spain. In addition to the mainroom, which holds about 300, there will also be a modern room. This will host the first set in the UK of Russ Vickers, since his return from the U.S. He will be ably supported by the cream of the west including Steve Lloyd, Malayka, also hoping that Meg Wilshire and Mike Ashley will being hitting the decks. Dave asks that everyone brings a soul club membership with them for sign in at the door. Admission for this special event is just £5, contact Dave for more details davethorley@aol.com or visit the www.soulstuff.co.uk A few words on the history of this famous event The venue started in the mid-seventies and ran for more than five years. During this time thousands of people passed through it's doors and for many it was there first allnighter experience. Over these five years it had three different promotors, the late John 'Kojac' Harvey, Dinks and Nick McAvoy and even moved venue with in the town from the Stars and Strips club to the Swimming Baths and back again. The event maintained a loyal following over its time, when many others came and went and now stands as one of the great 70's northern events. Yate also acted as a spring board for many DJ's; being the first regular allnighter bookings for the likes of Ian Clark, Dave Thorley, Ady Pountain and atttracting the big names of the day such as Pep, Soul Sam, Dave Withers and Gary Rushbrook. Those that went liked it because it always played a mix of 60's indemanders, the latest 70's 'Mecca' tracks, along side it's own new discoveries. To this day many still vividly remember certain tracks as 'A Yate Tune'. Flyer see guide Directions Berkeley is between junctions 13 and 14 of the M5. 14 nearest, about 4 miles from junction. Then through the town, taking left hand fork in centre by town hall. Then follow road to end and the Power Station, club last exit of round about, easy.
