  1. superb footage , and superb record never heard it before so thanks again ps:- anyone got an mp3 of it please ??
  2. met the DRIFTERS 10 years ago in majorca in the foyer of the venue there called the SON AMAR , which is like a las vegas venue nowadays obviously this group has had many members over the years and so I doubt if any of them were from the original line-up , but they did a brilliant show and sounded just right sadly johnny moore was no longer with them ( RIP ) neither was ben e king either
  3. I too used to go to ralphs records , just near victoria station , and bought most of those soul sounds listed above , including tami lynn and human beinz , sadly I sold up over 20 years ago to the guy running the record shop in ashton-u-lyne ( near yates`s wine lodge ) and also to dave stubbs in hyde , so I dont have those on vinyl anymore , just the memories and the tapes I made from them before selling them I also used to go to spin inn on cross street , rare records , one opposite rare records and the one near picadilly station on the approach , where I used to buy sue records like donnie elbert , and green door on island , and various atlantic and blue stax etc I also remember going to one shop on ashton new road near maynes garage where the old guy had a box full of old soul kept under the counter , open on sundays I think too sadly , my memory is fading fast nowadays and all the names escape me ;( good thread though , bringing back good memories
  4. hmmmm , DUKI RUGBY CLUB eh ?? went there a few times when ppl like Stubbsy were dj,ing there , with so is the sun - wc and elusive - br played also lived near there as a kid ( moved as they were building Duki Baths on Blocksages ) Currently live a couple of miles away and must get to see that Sea Harrier parked near there sometime soon , lol so where is the list ?
  5. it breaks my heart to see LEVI like that , especially after recently buying some of their dvd concerts etc from ebay and watching him/them in action I didnt realise he was that bad nice of them all to get together and give him a chance to sing , and you can still tell its him catches up with all of us eventually I suppose !! he puts the soul into soul for me I really do wish him well
  6. at last , one I have heard of , hence the response
  7. well I love that little richard tune , and "poor dog" too and mitch ryder and nearly all motown , including R.DEAN TAYLOR showing my age what ?
  8. too right ppl have paid their money to hear records , dancing is an addition as they are listening to the music as well , not instead of I was a mobile dj for over 10 years and used to play easy listening stuff in the slow early spots , and I can assure you ppl are still tapping their feet and hands , so do not assume that if nobody is dancing you havent got a job to do, thats what you are there for I would think you should play lesser known stuff or old stuff no longer played ( a revival ) because out of the thousands of excellent records that could be played later , I am sure you could find some that wont be so for a start , find and play Busy Signal by Flash and the Board of Directors - good tune , never played AFAIK
  9. when I was at school I was one of them trying to get every tmg single out , and the early stateside , and the ep,s etc ( had hundreds of them all at one time in my teens and twenties ) and for me and by better half ( our tune ) is LITTLE DARLIN - MARVIN GAYE - tamla and personally AINT TOO PROUD TO BEG - TEMPS ( and GET READY ) TEARS OF A CLOWN - SMOKEY ( and GOING TO A GO GO ) ONE WAY OUT - MARTHA REEVES SUSPICION - ORIGINALS THESE THINGS WILL KEEP ME LOVING YOU - VELVELETTES HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU/STAY IN MY LONELY ARMS - ELGINS I`VE BEEN BLESSED - BOBBY TAYLOR EDWIN STARR - I WANT MY BABY BACK CONTOURS - FIRST I LOOK AT THE PURSE SAME OLD SONG and/or SOMETHING ABOUT YOU - 4 TOPS THIS OLD HEART OF MINE - TAMMI TERRELL - motown it was an easy progression from motown , stax , atlantic , sue and thousands of other records into northern soul , and imports + bootlegs ( ralph`s records , spin inn and rare records etc , all in manchester , and places like selectadisk etc ie:- mail order)

aretha is a brilliant soul singer and like many of her genre isnt as respected in her own country as in the u.k. or europe, hence the northern soul scene etc billy preston was good enough to make his own records like "in the midnight hour" , "billys bag" and to play with the beatles as well on one of their hits as for organ music , the best soul one I ever heard is andre brasseur with the kid !!!!!!!!
  17. got both versions now thanks , same soundtrack , different groups/singers the one you said is female , whereas the int KCP is a male group , but they are both the same record , and the int KTF is the one featured on the wigan program all sorted now , so thanks again
  18. h**p://www.geocities.com/solidhit/wheel.html The International KCP's were a product of Jack Taylor's Rojac/Tayster setup in New York. Jack Taylor took his artists to Chicago and Detroit to record, and I assume that this version of Big Maybelle's record was cut in Detroit. Jack probably struck a deal with Wheelsville Records to pay for the recording in exchange for the rights to release this version of the song on their label. In any case, he used the backing track for Big Maybelle's Rojac release, with much more financial success than was the case for the Int'l KCP's. certainly looks like its the one on the tape just have to find it now !!! lol its deffo on here but I havent got it GSCD131 DANCIN IN D TOWN 1. 19. hope you are right , thanks I say this because I just put the lyrics into google and it came back with the vontastics , when my baby comes back home !!! SS 2002 The Vontastics Lady Love/When My Baby Comes Back Home (stateside) ps:- UPDATE found an mp3 of quittin time by big maybelle and its definitely the right record , but she is a female singer and I think the version I have on video tape is a male group so who else sings QUITTIN TIME ??? possibly william bell ?? thanks
  20. here is the title of the cd for the tv programme ITV , IN THE CLUB - WIGAN CASINO 2003 and having viewed the footage at wigan these are some of the lyrics I can make out quote when my baby comes back home I`m gonna give her the news that is a ( dont know word !!!! ) that is a ( dont know word !!!! ) ( repeated chorus ) ha , sitting home all alone time to prove I`m faithful but she runs all over town oooh shes so ungrateful unquote hope this helps identify the song title and group , as it doesnt seem to be on the cd for the other programme ( soul ) thanks for looking etc
  21. as a new member here who went to wigan casino , dukinfield rugby club and the "highland laddie"in ashton under lyne about 30 years ago , I would agree and I want to know which of the places in my area ( tameside/manchester ) are worth going to now in terms of hearing the "oldies" on the northern scene ? ie:- I would like to goto a few revival nights or similar but I dont know which to try ? ( prestwich , middleton , bury , bolton , blackburn or the kings hall - stoke etc ) I cannot tell from the adverts or threads here which would suit a person like me who wants to go back to the early wigan days but cant , and I dont really like the "modern" soul as much as the golden oldies from the `70,s , and having read the playlists of some of the posts in here like the new manchester venue , it seems to be soul and not northern soul , unless I am not reading it correctly ? so it would be great to hear from people who goto these venues nowadays and can say if they are big , excellent , revival or modern etc at the moment it looks as if the stoke one with 2 big rooms and the well known jocks is a good one to start with as I dont think I will be disappointed due to the lineup etc thanks for reading
  22. thanks for the reply I had that album on cd so I dug it out and checked the tracks , but unfortunately its not one of them that was certainly one of the 2 tv programmes , but I will have to find the footage and see if I can find out the programme name or something it sounded very much like an OLYMPICS track but I have checked several with no luck the hook chorus seemed to have that word UNGRATEFUL or something similar thanks again ps:- just checked the videotapes and its not the mark lamarr one featuring kev roberts or keb darge ( soul of london underground ) , its definitely the one with the cd listed in your link above - keep the faith The Northern Soul Generation etc , and the record is featured near the interview with stuart cosgrove
  23. hello there was a couple of tv programs about northern soul on tv last year ( I think it was last year , lol ) possibly channel 4 or 5 , and in one of them there was a track with a hook line that seemed to say the word UNGRATEFUL ,and it sounded similar to the olympics type of records like "i`ll do a little bit more! does anyone know the name of the record and the artist/group please ? thanks
