On a much smaller scale admittedly but I also have some very nice acetates that were given to me by a member of a very successful Electronic music duo and the last time I looked they were trading hands at 5 times the price they were going for 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure you made a good choice with purchasing those terrific Abbey Road ones there Pete !

Totally agree with this.

^^ big lol @Tomangoes post.. Maybe this would have worked better? "All you have to do is ask i'll try to mend your broken flask" DILYIID

Therein lies the dilemma with all portable turntables it would seem. I've got a few Hip Hop DJ mates who use the Numark PT01 decks for record digging and scratching purposes and one of the lads amongst them is an electronics Don when it comes to modding the PTO1's , adding crossfaders and other small improvements to the decks but the fundamental problem is the same, tone arms and stylus quality are of a particularly poor standard on the Numarks. I personally wouldn't want to play any unknown vinyl that I'd found on one of those decks for that reason alone. There is a fella named Jessie Dean over in the U.S. who builds custom crossfaders and Carbon Fibre tone arms with gold contacts for these PT01's that enables you to mount good quality carts like the Shure MM-47's directly on to..but the tone arm alone will cost you at least $150 to start with, something which seems somewhat ridiculous for a cheaply made, plastic portable deck in my humble opinion.

What would the quality of the internal components and stylus be like would be my first question here.? I know a lot of people who would want one of these things in a heartbeat provided that the build quality was of a decent standard. Good luck with the project.

Cueing options for vinyl other than headphones

Over enthusiastic fist pumping, bouncing around behind the decks like a deranged, gurning drug monkey and letting off high decibel air horns inbetween tracks is the new 'mic work'. Surely everyone knows that by now.......Don't they ?.. -

Yeah he's worth 24 million quid alright but money doesn't buy you happiness im afraid because Norm has no wife and to make matters worse a monkey im in the process of training is after his job.!... Happy Holidays to you also btw John ! -

Isn't that something of an oxymoron ?.. I personally wouldn't call what Fatboy Slim does as high end mixing, far from it in fact, all he does at his gigs is spin house music tracks and pump his fist in the air while wearing a succession of really bad Hawaiian shirts in my opinion. It's no wonder that Zoe wants a divorce. I could train a pet monkey( if I actually had one) to do what old Norm does..give him a month and the monkey would probably do a better job hehe. -

Yeah, you can set the LED EQ's on the mixer to CUE mode to see where the first bit of noise is but you cant do much other than that I was speaking with ex DMC World Champion DJ Jon 1st- earlier this morning and he suggested that the Denon Serato Box would be perfect for your needs so maybe that's another option for you to take a look at.. -

A couple of the guys I've spoken with have suggested this DVS Serato set up which I don't know much about personally I'm afraid as I've always been strictly old school when it comes to mixing on turntables but maybe its something you could possibly look into. Again,I'm not sure on prices and things like mixer compatibility to support this type of set up but here's a link if you want to see for yourself. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,I'm actually surprised there isn't some type of app out there that would help you with this as there seems to be apps for just about everything else these days ! https://serato.com/dj/expand-your-setup/dvs -

I'm a member of a Hip Hop DJ forum and some of the members on there use all kinds of weird and wonderful devices.Sorry,I don't have an answer for you straightaway but I will ask on there and post back here if I can find anything suitable for your particular needs.. -
Talking of 'Hip Hop drums' this track has been sampled quite a bit by several different Rap artists including Cypress Hill,Cannibal Ox and Blak Twang. Beautiful record though..
-
Hahaha. Marvellous !

Hey Lee. If you're producing this kind of music with a band(sorry, i'm under the impression that you're also the producer here and not just a band member) I would highly recommend that you read Gabe Roth's 'Shitty Is Pretty' essay on producing Soul and Funk tracks. I reference that particular essay all the time myself and its like a bible to me as I'm also a musician and producer ,its definitely worth checking out if you haven't come across it before. Its in two parts and it's pretty long but its brilliantly written and I've found it indispensable as a guide. Its also pretty damn hilarious too at times. There's a metric ton of advice in there when it comes to recording and obtaining the type of sounds that make for producing great, and most importantly, authentic sounding Soul and Funk music tracks. Apologies as I don't have a link to the article right now ,but if you Google it you will find it easily enough. Happy reading. Soulsides.

Some very sage words of advice from Crazylegs there, I wholeheartedly agree with those comments. Possibly not as sage as the above advice is a quote from my aunt who's a lovely lady, she's getting on a bit and slightly batty these days but that's what we all like best about her to be perfectly honest . Her motto is "If you want a dog, then get a dog" ! You can't really argue with that statement in my opinion hehe.

Out with my whippet in the fields next to where we live while the sun was actually shining for 5 minutes . His name is Mojo and he's a terrific little dog.It made me chuckle how he was stood in the warm spot with his eyes closed as I quickly took the pic on my phone.

Cover versions -The Good, The Bad, The Ugly ?
Soulsides replied to Rick Scott's topic in All About the SOUL
I've said this previously on here that in my humble opinion the only time an artist should cover someone else's record is if they have a completely different take on it or they can smash the original to pieces. A great example of a cover done better than the O.G.for me is Gene Chandler's version of There Was A Time . You need some guts to take on JB at his own game and not only does Gene Chandler do this,he knocks it straight out of the park , total exhilaration from the first to the very last note.( the little 'whew' vocal GC does at the end is one of the best things i've ever heard, I reckon he knew he'd just done something special all right ! ) The opposite of this is probably that terrible version of the Cajun Hart record that someone posted in the Pink Panther thread last week which is shocking ! I stand by my original statement hehe. -
Sorry but I personally don't see the point of this version.Wheres the grit, the sweat or the passion ? In my humble opinion as a musician, the only time you should cover someone else's record is if you have a completely different take on it or you can smash the original to pieces. Just my two cents.
-
Yes,yes it is unfortunately..
-
Wow...It says in the description section of the link that this version was arranged by none other than Gene Page. I really need to hear this one !
-
Yeah of course, you are right . it doesn't mean that Doug Goodwin was the said vocalist on the record,it could have been a session musician. Apologies .
-
Doug Goodwin .
