I had hoped to avoid such a discussion, but I suppose it was inevitable. What I was looking for from the post was records to be named. Purpose is to simply see what the choices would be. I'm discovering 'new to me' sounds all the time and it would be interesting to see if any of them fit the bill as someone else's 'played out' record? Easier to ask what yours are as opposed to me trying to list, as there are so many 'new to me' records that are 'old' sounds to someone else, if you see what I mean? Go on. Name your 'played out oldies' for me. It's all part of my education! KTF. Drew.

Followed many of the debates on here with great interest and clearly what is one person's 'played out oldlie' is not so for another. What is also clear is that what is being played in one area might be a 'poo' (sorry ) elsewhere. So, what are the present 'played out oldies' for you? Mine would be (and not to say they arn't great records): Better Use Your Dead - Little Anthony & The Imperials. You Don't Love Me - Epitome of Sound. One of these two seems to be played each time I go out! Not looking to start any sort of debate just interested to see if what is new to me etc.is someone else's poo? KTF. Drew.
  3. At work at the moment whilst reading this very interesting thread. A colleague with me who's not adverse to the music but not a collector other than CD's is to visit the States in May 07. He's going to North and South Carolina visting places such as Ashville, Wilmington and Charleston. He's also hoping to visit Macon in Georgia, the birth place of Otis Redding he tells me. Anyway, he asks are there any record shops in this area that he should visit just to have a look around? Don't panic, he's not about to grab all those goodies that may be there! Just something for an interested tourist. KTF. Drew.
  4. Hang on a mo! Now I believe that there are only a couple of origionals known of said Frank Wilson record but there are later pressings on I think, Tamela Motown . In light of the view that keeping it origional protects the scene, shouldn't the DJ's reply have been "I don't own that record and I couldn't possibly consider playing a later pressing even if I had one". Would have at least been more polite if not bollocks!!! KTF. Drew.

Well I don't agree and I'm taking my post home with me!!! KTF. Drew.

I always thought that Diana Ross was (is) a better singer of the two but that Martha Reeve's records fitted the scene much better, although you will hear much more of the Supremes about now. What's your view (and not allowed to say neither)? KTF. Drew.
  7. Here's hoping that in my life..........................(don't know how to isolate a section of a post! Anyone advise?) If that happens Russ none of us in our 30's, 40's and 50's will be invited, so where will that leave us? KTF. Drew.
  8. I can't find a 'smilie' that depicts kneeling on the floor bowing. Awesome knowledge Tone! Stand by what I heard though; Conny Van Dyke telling Richard Serling that she was the first white female artist to record for Motown!!! KTF. Drew.
  9. Hope this doesn't deflect your thread Supercorsa. I have a similar thing going on at the moment. In my local pub one can regulary hear Motown compliation discs. Unfortunately the records are the normal 'run of the mill' Motown tracks e.g Baby Love, Jimmy Mack ect.(with other better tracks as well). Recently, the younger relation (in her 50's) of the landlord and landlady has started to take over the running of the pub. The pub always has background music and I've worked hard to get these 'run of the mill' Motown discs played over the Country or Rock etc.requests. Anyway, in an attempt to explain to the new landlady that there is much more to Motown/easy-listening soul than she has at her disposal (and she likes the popular Motown type of stuff), I have created the following complilation (had someone else do the tecno stuff) of what I think are brilliant Motown(esk) and great 'easy to get used to' records but not the 'run of the mill' that might be played in the boozer instead of the norm. I know that they are not all Motown records but I think this is inline with the thread i.e educating those around us (through a compilation), who are not normally into the music. She's not actualy got the CD yet (nor have I) so can't wait for it's first outing in my second home! Would you like to hear this compilation in your local? Here goes: Don't come running to me. Cissy Houston. Why when the love is gone. The Isley Brothers. I got a feeling. Barbara Randolf. I still can't get to you. Joseph Moore. Getting mighty crowded. Betty Everett. Love runs out. Willie Hutch. Behave yourself. Miss Madelaine. Girls are out to get you. The Fascinations. This loved starved heart. Marvin Gaye. Only the guilty cry. Clydie King. Walk with me, talk to me. The Four Tops. Don't lead me on. Emanuel Lasky. In my lonely room. Martha reeves & The Vandellas. Two of a kind. Wade Flemmons. Kiss my love goodbye. Bettye Swann. This heart of mine. The Artistics. Walking up a one way street. Willie Tee. He's all I got. The Supremes. I can't break the news. Ben E King. And in return. Sheila Ferguson. Washed ashore. The Platters. I'll be loving you. The Soul Brothers Six. Take your love and run. Barbara Lynn. Everything's Tuesday. Chairman of The Board. Just another heartache. Little Ritchie. Truly yours. The Spinners. Enough to convert anyone in my opinion! KTF. Drew.
  10. Definitely Connie Van Dyke. Heard her interviewed on Richard Serling's sunday show a couple of years back. She was only 14 when she went on a Motown tour. KTF. Drew.
  11. That's where I heard that Marti Pellow song, in the car and whilst driving it seemed to fit the bill. Didn't know who it was and thought it was a 60's song. Now, as I said in my origional post, I would probably have been dismayed to hear this played at a Northern/Soul do and then be told it was MP. That aside, what's all this about moving posts because they are not soul related!!!!!!! I posted because I had heard something that sounded something like a 60's (pop) soul/motown record. Nothing more. All that happens when a thread goes the way that this has (not referring to the debate about what is soul as that is really interesting) is that some 'experts', through saying that this should only be in 'freebasing' etc, put we mere mortals off asking a question or posting an opinion for fear of sounding silly or ill informed. I for one will keep asking my questions, posting my thoughts, inspite of how some may feel that they might not fit a certain view of what this site or scene is about! KTF. Drew.
  12. This is an interesting question because yesterday I heard a song on The Jonathan Ross Radio Two show that I thought was an old soul record. Turned out to be a new song by.................................. Marti Pellow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thought It was good and wondered if any collectors/DJ's would ever consider buying something like this and even if they would play it out? Being the hipocrite that I am I'd be very disaproving if I heard this out and then the DJ announced it was said Mr P. Did anyone else hear it and what did you think? KTF. Drew.
  13. Didn't Johnny Walker play a Monitors record this morning on SOTS's? It was after a Drifter's record but I didn't catch the name. I was driving with the sprog in the car and he was 'rabbiting on' and not sure that I heard him right that it was a Momitors song. Was it? KTF. Drew.

I'll follow the replies carefully as each day I dream and tell myself I'll start collecting. Hope it goes well for you. KTF. Drew.
  15. No Rod. The Tabernacle was on Hillgate in Stockport. Before my time but later became Sargent Peppers which was not a soul club I believe,(opposite side of the road to Strawberry Recording Studio) Strangely enough the building that housed the Tabernacle and Sgt Peppers burned down also!!!!!!!!!!!! KTF. Drew.
  16. Paula Radcliffe has a few records doesn't she? KTF. Drew.
  17. There was a place in Stockport called Blazers just off Grt Portwood St. Older sister went there first around 1970 and later it burned down which was apt!! KTF. Drew.

Surely this is the way to stop this Oldies Vs Newies argument. A bit of something for everyone. One room, a selection of DJ's playing various genres of soul music that is generally played on the Northern and Rare soul scenes. If the modern stuff or other comes on and someone doesn't like it then it's a good time for the bar, natter etc. Just a view of course. KTF. Drew.
  19. Both me and another bloke I was with had coats stolen at a NS do only last year. I hate thieves! KTF. Drew
  20. Like Chalky I'd love to know what this is about? If posting an answer just complicates things could someone PM an explaination of what the fecks going on!!! Appreciate it's nothing to do with me but if we don't know could end up putting the proverbial foot in it! Whatever 'it' is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KTF. Drew.
  21. Thanks for the info Sean. Could you (or anyone else) post a sound file of the O.V. Wright version of There goes..... for a comparison as I think the WWW version for me will take some beating. Can't stop listening to it. KTF. Drew.
  22. Nice one Brian. I looked on TSCJB and it is Harry & The Keyavas. Awsome tune!! Thanks
  23. Sorry that this is slightly off thread but checked the SCJB to see if the Wee Willie Walker record that you suggest Gareth is there. It isn't but there is his record There Goes My Used To Be. This is new to me and It's fecking brilliant!!! Mods. Please feel free to move this as I would be interested in views of this record and don't wish to hi-jack the thread. Is the WWW record you suggested as good Gareth? KTF. Drew.
  24. What Saints record is this please? KTF. Drew.
