What? So in order to replicate the record on a carver, it would be OK to pay ONE of the artists an 'agreeable fee' and that would make it all OK? What was your friend, the 'local DJ' thinking of? Does your local DJ friend believe that Pete Smith has to find a group member (to bung a brown envelope to) everytime he gets a carver cut?

Might not be so spooky, my Bovine buddy. Think he might just have been trying to steal my thunder... rather like you did his! I took the 'Master' of the CD to Memphis to road test out there, last month! We had it on constantly during the trip. So to be fair, he did have a sneak preview... before he claimed 'em as his own... All we need now is for you to copy the tracks for your 'Soul Mates Database' and the whole world will be a better and more soulful place. Cheers mate... and enjoy the other 11 Sean

Strongly suggest you visit FAME studios and Muscle Shoals Sounds studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Well worth a slight divert to visit this Hallowed Ground... In Memphis, you MUST go and see the MASQUERADERS at the Blues City Cafe - Fri & Sat shows 7:00 to 9.45 (on both nights) at the top end of Beale Street opposite BB KINGs. They are still MAGNIFICENT, put on a great show - and the ribs are pretty serious there too! James Govan and his rhythm section perform at the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street most nights. The show is INCREDIBLE! Stax Studios (Museum) is also a must. You won't need me to explain why. Just go there! Plus, if you're keen on culture, visit the National Civil Rights Museum sited at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis where Dr Martin Luther King was assasinated. There's Record shops a plenty. "Shangri La" & "River Records" are well worth a visit. New Orleans has a few decent record shops including Louisiana Music Factory and Jim Russells. And of course Bourbon Street in the French Quarter has loads of great bars and music. Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have the time of your life! Sean

I guess everyone's different, Phil. Take all your points on board though. Me and a mate are trying to get a night together in our part of the world (keep getting let down by venues) chiefly cos nobody else caters for 'our particular' approach to Soul music in our region. It certainly won't be for the money as I'm sure there's a lot easier ways of making the 30 or 40 quid that some of these local events end up netting (if they make anything at all). Quite fancy the idea of making it a freebie - but equipment hire and room charges might make that prohibitive. Good post mate. Very interested in the views of others. Me too Tommy. When I bought the Oz copy he was straight intouch. He then started sending me all of his 'then' unreleased stuff and DVD's of his shows etc. I tried to get UK Based Record label interested in issuing "Suddenly" backed with his then unreleased take of "Living In The Footsteps Of Another Man" for him, but got no joy. Shame really, I reckon it would have sold a good few. Finally, though, "Living In The Footsteps" did come out over here - without Suddenly on the reverse. A really top guy - and, from what I've seen on the vids, an excellent performer. Sean

As an aside, last Saturday night at Brid Weekender, Tats wouldn't let me play it (we were double decking for two hours). He said it's the worst record ever made! Now, I might have been inclined to agree with him were it not for the fact that 1) I have a rare OZ issue... and 2) I happen to think Tony Drake is a top, top bloke... and 3) we were running out of giddy uptempo stuff to play (its all they seemed to want at the time)! Personally...I LOVE that Horn... but it's not particularly 'soulful' is it. What do you think? Should I have played it (and risked upsetting my buddy - or worse still, recieving a kneecap in the nether regions) or was he right to exert such strict quality control? Sean
