"if I Could Only Be Sure"
I think it's the way it meanders lethargically from the beginning to the blessed end in a kinda "stoned" miasma. I had no idea Little Feat were involved but that definitely explains why I detect more of an AOR rock than soul feel. Someone once tried to explain to me the difference between "major" and "minor" key in that NS songs are written/produced whatever in major key which imparts an uplift to the song. Maybe someone with a more musical bent could tell me whether this track is in minor key. ROD

Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
OK Ian I 've read your replies and accept that although the inferrence IMO is still there it wasn't your intention for it to come across as such. If the scene was based upon being heterosexual,Protestant and poor I think you'd have a point about any perceived difficulty in fitting in. As it was/is completely irrelevant..... ROD
-
Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
Im sorry Ian but it still reads to me that because we were working class his sexuality and his religion prevented him from fitting in when in the main people were either unaware or considered it no big thing anyway. The only people I can think of who would make an issue out of that would be your BNP types. Only Levine can tell us whether that was a problem for him. By "hostile environment" I mean conditions where he was not likely to thrive and as he made a massive impact on the scene for most of the 70's I'd say he fitted in rather well. As someone else has pointed out "Levine Must Go" was on a par with "Sam Must Go" or any other disgruntled chatter about dj direction you can hear any day of the week. I deplore the few homophobic snide remarks I've observed on here but most of the disagreement seems to have centred on the music although both sides have departed at times from any rational debate. Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
However it wasn't always an easy ride. Levine has always attracted a large degree of controversy throughout his life. He was almost cursed for being the offspring of rich parents, being Jewish and, eventually, being gay - all three things being the diametric opposite of what was essentially a working class scene in the North of the UK. I think it's fair to say that Ian Levine was never a natural fit I don't want to hijack this thread but I gotta agree with Prophonics that this bilge is a slur on those of us who were there. To read that you'd think we were a bunch of neo-Nazi skinheads. Imagine our surprise when we found out that the records we were listening to were invariably made by Black artists!! Im not saying Ian hasn't come up against discrimination. I've been appallled by the odd homophobic comment on the two recent threads. However I think it's up to Ian to say how much he considers his differences with other people to have been down to his sexuality or religion or whether he felt uncomfortable playing in the hostile environment portrayed by Ian D. Im sure there were a few knobheads but why this gross stereotype of the rest of us ROD

"if I Could Only Be Sure"
Thanks for that Sebastian that explains everything. Little Feat? I think you mean a group that grates. ROD

"if I Could Only Be Sure"
Does it not remind anyone else of "Mama told me not to come"? When I hear it in my head I can visualise the shambling zombie hordes stumbling across the floor as it oozes out the speakers in an interminable drone. The Lizard thing sounds "rock-ish" to me as well. Time to dust off "Ooh Baby". That's something he can be proud of. ROD

"if I Could Only Be Sure"
"It's a nice record for sure" I guess so if you're a fan of Three Dog Night or similar AOR schlock. Truly mindnumbingly dreadful!!! ROD

Raphael Saadiq
Im a bit perplexed as to why some people on here seem to assume that because you're into predominanyly 60's soul 45s you only possess rudimentary critical facilities. Whilst admitting it's a lot better than Duffy etc and "Love that girl" has a nice groove it just doesn't have the feel of a 60's 45. Sure more than a passing resemblance but still sounds like a Motown pastiche to me from the David Ruffin look to the Stevie Wonder "growl" [it is him I assume] on "Stayin in love" ROD

J D Bryant On Ebay
Well there are those on here who claim the future of Northern lies overseas on the Continent and USA with a younger enthusiastic crowd unencumbered by the politics. Of course the future in this case appears to be something from 25 years ago over here but let's not quibble. At least the buyer likes rocksteady/ska too so he can't be all bad. ROD

Set Times
I was thinking something along those lines. If the dj's compliment each other and let's take Chalky's "dream" line-up wouldn't it seem like a continuous spot anyway, where the dj's build on what has gone before. As Chalky states those dj's play his 60's/70's cross section anyway so what difference does the length of the spot make other than fitting more records into it. I know nowt about house scene that Barry cites but Im assuming that a 4 hour marathon would not really vary in style that much in comparison to say Sam playing everything from 60's to current releases. If you actually listen to something like that it's not exactly the seamless join that I imagine a house spot would be, so wouldn't it be difficult to create an atmosphere/vibe for an entire set. Im really not a fan of modern [surprise] so the change in styles does come across as rather jarring to me but I accept that if you're a fan of both you might not find it so. ROD Nothing against the proposal but it does smack of re-arranging the deckchairs....

Luther Ingram Hib Orange Label
Mine's the same. To be honest I was a bit mystified by John's auction blurb as I think this label version is relatively common. ROD

Jimmy Ruffin 1965 - "on The Avenue"
I think I can throw some light on why that happened. When we had the original tape with the instr version on it we sent it down to Birmingham to have acetates cut of all the decent tracks. The guy who cut them is credited on the Maisonettes. Maybe the producer.. Johnny ? Whatever, when Maisonettes came out I thought he'd copied the instr but kinda put the melody back to front, if that makes sense. ROD

Number Of People Into Northern Now And Then
Er... I guess you were saying that but "into" seems the wrong word. A casual acquaintance with current Black Music I'd grant you. 60's and 70's NS I wouldn't have said so, and I thought that was what we were talking about. As for other sub-cultures if we're talking punk, new romantic or whatever it's just all crap pop music to me. Think my stepdaughter mentione "Emo" quite a bit which I believe is a current "thing". Apart from the fact that I find it unhealthy that a girl of her age should show any interest at all in Rod Hull the music is all easily available, interchangeable pop rubbish. Bottom line. No kids today are NOT into NS and they're NOT coming to save us, not that we need f**king saving in the first place. ROD

I don't think you have anything to worry about as it was the POG show. However should it ever appear on the stage at Glastonbury or similar festival then that I think would be the right time to bid it farewell. ROD

Number Of People Into Northern Now And Then
Well I have a 22 year old son,a 21 year old stepdaughter, a 22 year old stepson and 4 nieces and nephews all around mid-20's. Also met many of their friends. Despite any proximity to the music from the more immediate members of my family I can categorically state that NONE are into NS or show any interest whatsover. The only eclectic trait I can discern is that they're equally at home listening to hip-hop as a white guitar band as long as it's in the Charts or fashionable. Probably nearest any of them come to it is that Foundations 45 on Pye [forgot title] which appears to be very very popular. A couple of tunes on an I-pod or bit of a mix at some student night in Manchester does not make a NS fan. Nor does force-feeding it to your kids. ROD

Melvin Davis And Steve Mancha, I Need My Baby
Yes it's on Goldmine Sevens GS0001 with "Hit & Run" Pat Lewis on other side. No original 60's release. ROD

Number Of People Into Northern Now And Then
I wonder about that too especially when you see the number of bids 45s attract on Ebay. Hardly any really if you consider how many fans are purportedly out there. ROD

Why The Venom
I do think you're being a bit hard on Russ as you're judging his part in the Casino with the benefit of hindsight. Yes your list of naff moments is spot on, apart from This England" which IMO is better appreciated today than our initial reaction to it at the time, but they were all 2-3 years down the line from the opening night. At first, as part of an ensemble, Russ was no different to anyone else. I agree we didn't first go to Wigan to hear Russ, like say we did in the later years to hear Richard, but back in '73, with the exception of Levine's weekly changing playlists, you kinda knew what the big sounds were and as long as you heard them it didn't matter who was playing them. That changed over the years and a more exclusive/"one-off" ethos crept in and then it became more important who the dj was. That Russ had lost it by then is also true. As for Richard I remember him getting his break at the Pendulem through Barry Tasker and then Dj-ing at VaVa's in Bolton [did he run it as well?] but he made his name at Wigan and the least we can say that Russ was aware of the importance of getting a decent line-up together. I thought your summation of Dave Evison was extremely diplomatic in that "groundbreaking" is not the first description that would occur to me either. He is as you say a nice guy and I wonder if Russ's perceived persona is not clouding a fair assessment of the time. ROD

"But chubby "50 something" women" SteveG quote Oh dear, dear, dear! I hope Steve you have more than a passing resemblance to Sean Bean or that could rebound rather nastily. Still, it will earn me enormous Brownie points with my wife when I show her that compared to some I've made significant progress to becoming a model "new man". Let's just hope that nobody brings this to the ATTENTION of the FEMALE CONTRIBUTORS to this thread. ROD

Well I was embarrased at times FOR those taking part in that it was always going to be about POG dressing up and getting a laugh out of the audience, but not BY the participants who did their best to get across what it meant to them at the time and now. I think once you start describing parts of the scene as "sad" and by extension those who prefer the more nostalgic/retro side of things, then you're making subjective judgements based on your own preferences and prejudices. Similar to what went on in the OVO thread recently. I think you've just got to accept that not everybody approaches Northern with the same mindset but that doesn't make them an embarrassment or set them up as a "whipping boy" for what others may perceive as a sideshow to the main event.
