  1. Anyone who had the misfortune to go to the Whalley Brass Band Club would have heard my attempts to introduce bingo to liven things up and attract the more active pensioner. Unfortunately due to backbiting politics or Geoff Buckley as he is known locally I was thwarted in this regard. Geoff was OK with bingo in between the dj sets but not so keen with bingo instead of his set. It's this dog in the manger attitude that will lead to the demise of the scene. Geoff didn't have much time for my brother-in-law's Matt Munro tribute act either which I felt would have been an introduction to NS in the same way as is being suggested for Ms Duffy. ROD
  2. I've seen little influx of youngsters to the scene and I think we are highly unlikely to as well in sufficient numbers to continue the scene...the odd venue that do have yopungsters are the exception rather than the rule and many of those do not travel. why on earth would they want to go out with 400 folk old enough to be their mums dads and in some cases grand parents I see you have completely ignored my comment about the magic lure of the bongo!! ROD
  3. You know this is a nonsense argument!! Merely pointing out that he is a fan and as a singer he fancies doing a set of covers of a guy he admires. Wether he will pull it off who knows. If you were representing Mick what would you advise? I assume Bobby will get some publicity at least out of it. You'd know more about what that is worth to an artist. I did a quick google and Bobby is 78. Is he still gigging? It is not outside the realms of possibility that Mick might earmark some percentage to Bobby from sales I suppose nor that a future tour might involve a guest spot? ROD
  4. Chaumonts here too in Macca sales /Sounds-...mp;hl=Chaumonts ROD
  5. Er, I assume you're all aware that he was buying soul records around Manchester in the 80's and that Bobby was his favourite singer, so it's not like a bolt out of the blue. Very good that,Paul. ROD
  6. 'ere we go again!!! What this scene needs is loads of young people aged 16 upwards with I assume from other ramblings on this site a more upfront contempory music content like House say. sorry make that soulful House. It's delusional!! The way forward is the bongo. "The only down side of some of the spot's in the modern room and house of soul was the over use of the live percussion...... it's great for a one hour set with someone like Snowboy as he works with the guy on percussion well ..... But it seemed over used IMHO..... I wanted to hear Jamie mix the chooons and all I could hear was the bongos!" The above is from the Prestatyn thread. I have seen live percussion used in the odd student/funk club back in early 90's but first time ever seen it in relation to "Northern", if somewhat tenuous in that it was in the modern room. ROD
  7. Still taller and better looking than you thank you and Im sure you''re right with that observation about how the Mecca was billed early on in say 71/72. No idea when Godin coined that term but Im with Barney and thinking of my first forays into NS which were around '69. Not wishing to be pedantic or get involved in semantics but I'd say difference in meaning in "rare" soul with Tony Jebb or whoever and " the "rare soul" scene now referred to. What that subtle difference is.... ROD
  8. I have no idea what it was called before NS and I was there. Not "rare soul" anyway,Dave. That was a tag given it a lot later. Wasn't it just "soul"? ROD
  9. Whilst I agree with the general concensus on this thread I am interested in what this yawning chasm actually is between what you play and what some of the crowd want. ROD
  10. Now on Kim Weston double CD. ROD
  11. Yeah,I know that,Baz. I meant are those credits enough to prove it's a Philly production. ROD
  12. Jimmy Bishop and Bobby Martin credited? ROD
  13. I think you may be very wrong there Matt. I too only use internet/Ebay and the odd 45 from other dealers and you can pick up decent 45s for 10% of supposed guide value. For me there are so many 45s available cheap that I end up spending loads anyway. As Jorge said if Im having a bad day I might have to pay 75% of the guide value. And I am talking Ex to M condition too. I am though just a Northern collector so if I like it I buy it. Im not chasing Wade Flemmons, Darrow Fletcher, Detroit Soul etc or established mega-rarities so there's not much competition. ROD
  14. It's a long time for me too but I think he did as he wrote quite a few things in his time. A reasonably odd story about the Velvets 45 and one other. I got into a guy's basement on my first trip to Chicago in '79 to find that Anderson had just been there. The guy had his 45s well arranged and there was a divider with "Velvets" written on it but nothing in the gap. But in the next division [forget what] there was one misfiled Velvets. Then I found elsewhere a couple of James Fountain's [not the big deal it is today but still OK]. So I thought to myself Mr. Anderson you're not the big 45 finder you thought you were. I've come after you and found these 45s you shoulda taken. Pretty pleased with myself. 12 years later I hook up with same guy and go down the basement. Lots of new discoveries since 79 and of course change in style and tempo so gotta be worth a visit. Nothing great but a lot of £5-10 45s which back in '79 were nowt and the odd "newie" like "Thinkin'about you" but then misfiled I found another copy of James Fountain that I'd missed first time around. ROD
  15. They're exactly the same from what I remember and I've had both. Just different details but same 45. ROD
  16. Not sure if you understood Tony's cryptic reply. It got released around same time twice. As Phil Orsi on Wise World and Velvets on Number One. Both 60's and personally I have no idea which was first. Boba may know. ROD

Yes well, that is disco. Not a pleasant "lilt" in sight. Very well thank you but smoking ban is not helping. Trust you are still wealthy, sorry healthy. ROD
  18. https://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZm.spivens There,Tony if link works.. Marc, I Looked. Yeah, not as rare but your point is? No idea who seller is but Motorcity have bid on other 45s I've been interested in so why would they be in cahoots with seller or withdraw their bid if not. I reckon the guy has found a few copies and knows bugger all about 45s so just bought whatever, rare or not,and listed them. ROD
  19. I've no idea why anyone would say it is unlikely multiple copies have been found when it appears from the blurb that they may have been stored in an old record shop. In my experience deffo possible. The only thing you need to check is that the 2nd chance offer is genuine and not a scam. ROD

Nev, my comments were no reflection on your approach to buying. More to do with the tossers on Ebay who sell records with no correlation between grade and price, and because of the feedback system have been getting away with it up to now. I don't know if you would have got it cheaper at a lower start price as I have no idea what other collectors rate it at but $500 start for a less than Mint copy seems a tad OTT. It is a fantastic record and Im sure I pointed that out to Dave when I played it to him. Im certain I didn't say "isn't this the kinda crap you like" as he would probably claim. And now back to Ebay to return a VG++ [that's supposedly almost Mint by US grading - it is by John Anderson's anyway] copy of Chessmen which is f....d IMO. ROD
  21. As you didn't go to the Twisted Wheel, Flynny, I wouldn't of expected you to be aware of the Mowtown label from Philly with it's sister label. Lawn. Turf Tydell's version of "Grazing in the Grass" came out on it in '68, and I believe there's a release by Kennard Gardener. Mossy, there's 2 up for auction right now starting at 99 cents and $9.99. Both $100+ now. So it's not the dealer who is selling above your £50 valuation. We are British after all and need to form an orderly queue and wait politely till the next copy appears once there's a bid in. Of course that means the Germans will charge in and snaffle 'em up. ROD
  22. https://cgi.ebay.com/Old-Clara-Hardy-45-Nor...ksid=p1638.m124 Hope that link works. You just gotta read the ad blurb. Priceless!!! Maybe his picture here. https://cgi.ebay.com/Half-Pound-Old-World-C...ebayphotohostin Im sure the actual 45 is genuine and for sale BUT it's just too much of a tall tale. Guy from Detroit Antiques may know the odd coin dealer though. Looks like shifting copies through an alternate outlet to me.

I thought I recognised tune but label rang no bells. Still it looked like it was only fit for the bin to me. Didn't seller start it off at $500? These guys are really taking the piss out of the lot of us. ROD
