Well, in the absence of Manship's 378 page guide to "Rare Soul Definitions", I think we have to go by the consensus which has been arrived at over time. It enables us to talk about 45s without misunderstanding or confusion. Sure you've noticed that it's "re-issue" that's causing the problem as no one has an objection to Revilot being described as the first release. Without wishing to be pedantic as Louise [in fact, Dave - weekend cross-dressing thing - don't ask] pointed out I think it's just the wrong term to use and throws up other questions such as "pick-ups" by national labels of local releases. I mean would anyone describe Intrigues on Yew as a re-issue of the Bullet 45 or Formations on MGM from Bank ? Maybe East and West coast pressings too ? I think most would agree that "re-issue" refers to a later release some time after the original release and usually to cash-in on demand for something no longer readily available. I know next to nothing [as the wife often says] about process of pressing up 45s. No idea if it was established practice to run demo copies off first or vice versa. Whether demos hit radio stations before or at same time as the shops. I'm guessing might have been both but you can get too hung up on that kinda thing [see any OVO debate on here] and "that way madness lies" [Kevin "King" Lear I think]. Bringing prices into it isn't that relevant really. All have our own ideas as to what is a crazy price on any 45. In this instance it's a lot of money. Certainly wouldn't buy it myself if I had £15,000 but if I had £150,000... Couldn't agree more with your assertion that demos were often better quality which is why I've now put my London demo up to £14,544. ROD

I think we have 45+ years of rare soul collecting to say that,although Stomping's explanation is logical to a limited extent, practice and accepted definitions on our scene means London is first original UK issue. Not even sure if Stomping's theory was true that the London would be the second pressing or re-issue due to releases in other countries beside UK and USA. Canada ? As he says though immaterial. Meant to be played and enjoyed. When did Northern become less anarchic and more archival ? Someone told me once that Rock n Roll collectors don't like UK demos. Prefer regular issues. No idea if true. ROD

I prefer "tongue in cheek" Phil. And perhaps some are being a bit unfair re the reasons this 45 went for so much money. Some collectors have been very successful [the b**tards] in their lives and a 45 like this will fit in with what they already have. Rather than a trophy piece it may be just the jewel in their crown. And if they can afford it....... ROD

I think the USA demo is quite rare in nice condition. Not £20 anyway. Apart from that agree. Just think how many rare modern 45s you could get for £14543. Actually scrub that. Is the auction still on ? ROD

You're right - I am confused now. What you call progress and evolution I just see as divergence no different than going off on some soulful house tip. And I agree there are "rules" around NS but if I can use Burnley as an example where I think I've heard the funk and R&B you describe then their similarity in sound would suggest there are "rules" there too ? Shame Pow Wow is an R&B nighter as it would have been interesting to compare the differences [if any] between the two rooms' playlists if you were playing the full range you refer to. ROD

Unless you like funk and r&b of course, in which case the quality of records played will have seriously improved. You may have assumed that these diversifications have taken place due to people running out of the traditional style, but that isn't the case. Many people like music, and find embracing different styles rewarding, others actually prefer soul OTHER than trad northern, like me. If that traditional northern soul sound is all you want then there's a whole nostalgia scene for you, maybe it's time to accept it. maybe, as an upfront scene, northern soul IS dead, but soul lives on, in all it's forms. That's progress. This seems a bit confused. To prefer a traditional NS sound does not mean a liking for oldies based on nostalgia. I'd suggest that the 45s put out on Kent Select or Kent Anni in the main fit the trad description but I don't think they're aimed at the oldies end of the scene. Nor would the punters who travel down to London describe themselves as oldies fans. I think they go to hear something new and fresh which is of equal quality to what has gone before, unless the Lambeth Walk has come back into fashion ! IMO the next Mello Souls Butch turns up will be far more popular/talked about/in demand than any R&B or funk 45. As for progress I heard that back at the Mecca in 76/77 and at tail-end of Wigan but the 45s kept turning up that kept the scene going for another 30 years. ROD

Come on Dave you knew all this before you bid ? Im thinking there may be an opening here for some trustworthy and efficient US based ex-pat to make a few bob as a forwarding service. Instead of $12 per 45 from each seller it's $23 for 15 x 45s. A small charge of $20 plus 15 x $5 [sometimes less] for US postage from seller to said ex-pat and buyer is $85 better off plus no customs charges if declared at $1 each to UK. Drawbacks are you'd have to wait till 15 45s ready to go. Any others ? ROD
