I know that Sean but if you're coming from Northern angle then "..Heard.." is not Northern so unlikely to have it. And we are trying to arrive at a 45 everybody owns. I have the two you mentioned but then I collect Motown but you're right they're not Northern either. And just to pre-empt you as to why I don't have Marvin if I collect Motown I did buy it at the time but when I got to hear the back catalogue I just thought it wasn't a very good 45 as representative of the Motown sound. A bit pedestrian really. I still don't know where we're up to!! ROD

Im guessing most come to this forum via Northern so why on earth would anyone have that 45? It's a good game but I think NZ needs to exercise a bit more control so not too many titles are put forward at once as it gets confusing. Where are we up to now. Which 45s are still in the running? ROD

Rowntrees Sound was a pub/club on Corporation St just down from Marks&Sparks going toward Ralphs and Victoria Station. Don't know if it was actually a soul club but a lot of guys used to hang around there on a Saturday afternoon. As for Al Devine Im guessing he was an old mod and deffo not a guy getting on the early bandwagon. He probably was one of those who got that bandwagon rolling!! ROD

Jez, I think I went to a club actually in Macclesfield in early 70's so you may be thinking of that. There was a night at the Spectrum pub on London Rd about 1mile from Stockport town centre that I think was on a Thursday but can't remember re Saturday. Rick Cooper did dj there occasionally. Long long time ago when O'Jays "Deeper in love" and "Looky Looky" were popular. Remember Rick playing "Baby boy". No idea who ran that. There was also an allnighter at the Tabernacle club in Stockport but I never went and pretty sure it was very early days like '68 or earlier. There was a lot going on around Manchester in late 60's/early 70's cos of the Wheel but I was just starting out and I think a lot of the movers and shakers then have disappeared now. Well in fact they'd gone by early 70's. Another good dj based on what he played at the time was Al Devine who used to do the Moon in Duckinfield. ROD

This bit of info is not a definite history but just what I remember. Im pretty sure the original Pendulem was somewhere like the Victoria Hotel, Hardman St. No idea how long it was based there but I went along one night after a Chairmen of the Board show and I was still at school so sometime between '69-'71. There were quite a few clubs around Manchester at that time playing "Northern" [altho not called that then] originating out of the Wheel scene and the venues I attended then were the Poco Poco in Stockport [sunday night], Moon in Duckinfield [Thursday and Saturday nights], Birdcage in Ashton [sunday night], Browns in Levenshulme [weekday night I think]. No idea when Pendulem moved to MSG but I was a regular there from sometime in '72 although I was living in London for a while but still used to get back some weekends. It was deffo a Friday and then Sundays were introduced but to be honest I can't remember Saturday nights but then Torch or the Mecca were on. I don't know if Saturdays were a short-lived trial. I reckon Barry Tasker was one of the best dj's ever and IMO him and Dave were miles ahead at the time. They seemed to have all the Torch biggies and others that didn't catch on till years later such as Mamie Galore on Sack and Joseph Moore. I'd imagine Brian "45" Phillips had some input there, but there were other "faces" such as Al Birkhead and Steve Vickers who seemed to have a phenomenal knowledge of 60's soul. I don't remember Rick Cooper being a regular there but he may have done a guest spot as he worked at Global and had a really good collection. Similarly Richard worked at Global too and did get a regular spot but I think toward the end of the club. Bearing in mind that other thread about "warm-up" spots Barry and Dave would play a lot of 45s at the beginning which were yet to break. Rhonda Davis was a constant "bubbling-under" sound. Bobby Bland was a favourite too with "Yum Yum Tree", "Shoes" "Aint nothin' you can do". Quite a lot of midtempo stuff in fact when at the time the faster sound was in vogue. I don't know about Chuck Wood. Think that was more a youth club 45 even then but I do associate "Unsatisfied" with the club. I guess it was slightly dodgey sometimes and I can believe the tale about Sam and his 45s but generally it was OK there and if you didn't go but went to Cats instead I'd say they were on a par from what I've read of Cats. Im sure Francis T or Julian Bentley on here can remember other details. ROD

The 1.09mm was brought to my attention by Mr. Manship in a recent auction to differentiate that from the St.Louis pressing. As Godz pointed out I found it fairly amusing to think we had come to this in relation to listening to the music we love and I'd imagine it's the kinda stuff maybe spouted by someone out to parade their superiority hence my inclusion in a hopefully funny aside completely ruined by Godz picking me up [quite rightly] on my spelling of Chateauneuf... I quite agree. Just last week I was sharing a fine bottle of Chateau Neuf du Pape with Jo Armstead who was incredulous that there are some collectors and dj's out there who have to make do with the 1.09mm Salvadors release, and I did mention then that snobbery and pretention were rife nowadays but I didn't get involved myself. It's £45 on Manny's at E+ 1/10 for effort. Simple google and no grading of sleeve or vinyl. Did you learn nothing from being sat next to me at Wigan other than not to openly display Cabaret Voltaire 12"s? ROD

Im sure you're correct in your character assassination critique of Mr Chadwick and his ill-fated dj career. Who could not be moved by the soul stylings of Ms Swann. I especially like the duet "Hippopotamus Song" with that Flanders guy. Whilst I respect your stance not to attend nights featuring bootlegs I would suggest that the decision is based on the music policy rather than the actual bootleg. Is there a cut-off point? One bootleg is too many? I can't imagine you hang around the decks checking so you must have made the choice on the dj rosta and the type of event advertised before deciding whether to go. Now I and maybe others dont go to R&B events but that doesn't mean you shouldn't play R&B. It's just a personal preference as is yours. Bandying about the term "twat" [not you!!] to describe non-OVO people is rather OTT in my view as is ascribing the basest of instincts to them whilst portraying the OVO breed as beyond reproach. We've already mentioned Mr. Chadwick. The lack of passion and commitment on the part of the non-OVO is frequently cited and yet Im sure we can all think of other OVO djs and collectors who have dropped off whilst, to use Sean's Biffo,he is still doing it albeit with a mixture of boots,re-issues and carvers, long after these other guys have gone. Who has the long-term dedication there? I don't think we should be sneering at those who buy boots. Family Tree made a very good point that these fans don't set out to buy boots as a snub to the OVO mob. They buy what they like as cheap as possible and if they've been into it as long as the rest of us, which they have,they've ended up with a large collection that will include legit re-issues and originals. The problem some have on here is when these people fancy sharing their collections with like-minded folk in a club but then they're not guesting at Burnley,Lifeline, Middleton etc. I understand the rationale behind discouraging boots/carvers from becoming acceptable outside of an oldies night but again I think it's more to do with moving the scene on and not getting stale. Im sure someone like Paul S would think the same of the OVO dj who played safe. If it's upfront then it will be OVO anyway and there's no need for self-appointed guardians to enforce the rule. And if as Gasher mentioned someone is there playing Grapevine re-issues that you have on original to play then maybe time to get a couple of new tunes. A couple of bits of your "evidence" that I didn't really agree with. The odd Emi was played at Wigan and Stafford but you're right exception rather than the rule. As for "serious dj's" back in the day Im not so sure it was like that. Rather than build a collection wasn't it more play the latest sound and unload when word got out re imminent pressing and buy something on the up. No doubt Ian will have input on that. Finally I think it's Darcy who has been one of the most vocal on here in criticising the non-OVO attitude but he does tend to bring up the same comments time and time again and whilst generalising I have a suspicion that he's got somebody definite in mind but I think he may be stereotyping everybody on the basis of just the one ego-tripper. The name Steve Chadwick springs to mind. I've no idea why some people who collect OVO have such a downer on those who don't. It seems to come down to dj spots. Less-deserving jocks are.... Well actually Im not sure what they're doing. Bringing the scene into disrepute I guess although most on here have said that they're not really part of it if they play boots. I think if you're gonna be critically harsh with those people maybe you should apply similar rules to the OVO mob. Such as don't play 45s I heard 20-30 years ago whilst pretending it's upfront or if your playlist doesn't include your own discoveries then don't bother at all. Extremely easy to invent your own rules with a few like-minded mates and look down on those that don't follow them. ROD

I wasn't really thinking of carvers in connection with oldies nights. No one gets a carver do they of something that's already booted or re-issued. Getting carvers of current sounds is obviously a no-no but it's nothing new unless I imagined all those Emidiscs back in the 70's. Im not sure where this obsession with oldies originated but I'd guess Mr M's. I don't think the records played in there were all originals so there is no OVO history with that part of the scene. I'd say if anybody dj-ing is pissed off when someone plays a boot or re-issue of a 45 on your playlist then maybe it's time to look at your own box cos obviously you need to refresh. As for telling people that they're some kinda second class soul fan cos OVO plays no part in their thinking it's condescending and patronising. There's a multiple of choices available so I'd have thought avoiding the venues where anything goes is enough without also demonising anyone involved from promoter down to clientelle. ROD

Kinda what I was thinking too. Still Ebay do have rules about selling boots and counterfeits so as long as they enforce it "Digger" should be alright. A thought!! Does that mean he might be better going through Ebay rather than Paypal? ROD
