When I started buying records late 1978 I bought certain labels like Ric Tic etc because there were supa cheap and full of quality etc . Right the way through to the early nineties a lot of people on the scene were not too obsessed with out and out rarity but just quality . Nice stuff demanded decent prices but the price was never in the spotlight like it is now . Three reasons have amplified this the first been the for Millionaires Only Cds and the Rare of the Rare dos which basically said these records are dog rare and worth xxxx etc . The real irony of this was first these records were mainly played at the casino from 78 and the market was still finding its feet in that marketplace at the time regarding price , I saw records quoted for silly prices then that I was still picking up relatively competitively, my mates were also . The third is auctions and social media taking the music to a different geographic, backed by media spotlight and the romance attached to owning the next big thing . I collect what I like but a scene that has punters paying inordinate money for The Aquamen etc has to be seriously missing the point . That is 95 per cent of black music is still under £10 and awe inspiring if you question this go out and buy anything by say the Soul Children On Stax and compare it to Bill Bush . If you have an once of soul you will get it ?

If it relates to all genres why do we have Modern Soul , Motown ,Deep Soul, Sweet Soul/ Lowrider / Funky Soul / Xover Soul and so on and so forth . It’s the northern soul crowd that have defined these not Paul Daniels lol . Trying telling the average man/women on the street what it is I bet you get your Ps and Qs wrong . Walk past a normal pub and see a sign saying Northern Soul @ Motown then go in and listen to the biggest load of shite ever played . No wonder the scene tried to classify and diversify the music the word is a bigger embarrassment than Last nights coronation street ?

I think auction prices definitely do not reflect trends on most buying platforms ie Facebook rare soul sales etc . It gets me to thinking about who’s buying at these prices ? I know it’s a cliche but the sussed collector imho would not venture any where near some of the auction prices certainly in the UK ? I could be totally wrong but? The thing that binds it all together is the fact that the buying scene was always quite insular based on shared knowledge and a general consensus that a certain record was worth a certain price . Auctions have smashed this notion and show no sign of slowing down in some respects . The Sweet Soul Market has added to the equation and brought a bit extra spice, but the price of big northern things particularly oldies to me defies reason. It’s a New Dawn for the nova rich ! Oh and yes for bigger items only worth what one person pays this can be verified when a similar item auctions within a certain time period again and the price differs markedly , this does happen !

Nice to see Detroit Soul talked about these days it dont happen much ? Both records are priceless and things of utter bueaty imho .

I agree it sometimes just takes a while to get there , if it’s soulful it’s soul music right, that includes all genres that are defined by our good selves ?

What has crossover got to do with modern soul ? Plus who cares if there appreciated by northern soul fans ? Actually referring to northern soul these days is like signing a death warrant ( it has so many connotations ) . Sone of these connotations usually mean worn out oldies and baggy trousers , more often than not ?

The British Soul Scene has always been obsessed with defining the music in its own quirky way . A scene that calls modern soul a record from the seventies onwards must have a tinch of pure irony to it ? My understanding of the genre is that it’s that period in soul music from 1969 where the production benefitted from slightly more sophisticated arrangement and generally did not sound as hard as some of the more gritty hard soul from the sixties . J J Barnes I’ve got to get rid of you is generally accepted as one that epitomises the sound but to be honest there are tens of thousands . We used to have literally thousands posted daily on here in the crossover thread . Any one with any logic might just go for calling it Soul Music however it just cuts out all the confusion ?
